Root Lollipop questions from root nOOb

I am All But a root virgin.

My N4 is rooted with the Wugs tool kit but that's about all I knew how to do. I may not even have the latest version of Wugs though I have updated that once since I rooted early this year.

I was too ignernt and skeered to even update to 4.4.3.

I originally rooted mainly to turn on Lte which I was going to do with that app for that but I managed to bugger that up too. I still have no Lte but that's not an issue really now with the H+ speeds here.

I REALLY don't want to lose all my data.

I just saw a post about the PIA of updating phone drivers on Win 8.1 not sure what that is about.

It's probably time that I do an upgrade.

What's the Easiest Way to accomplish this without losing my data I have now. I really don't care if I stay rooted or not.

Please help. Please type very slowly. ;)

As long as you haven't installed a custom recovery, you should be okay to accept an OTA. Depending on how you rooted using Wug's you may have installed a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) .... boot into recovery and check ...

1. Power off phone
2. Press and hold both power and vol. down until the fastboot menu appears.
3. Use the volume keys to scroll to "recovery Mode"
4. press power to select.

What does it say at the top?

Reboot the the phone.

If you've got a custom recovery, the OTA will mess that up, if they can succeed at all ... it's not worth the effort to try. Best thing would be to backup your data, flash the factory image for Lollipop and restore your data.

Found it ...

Here's the process. First make sure you let Google "backup" your apps and settings. It will store phone settings but not app settings. And, it doesn't really backup your apps but keeps a list of installed apps linked to your Google Account. Also make sure Automatic restore is checked. This is under menu>settings>backup & reset. If these weren't checked previously, give it some time to sync. I really don't know if it's immediate or not, but 24 hours would be reasonable.

Now the fun begins ... First boot into your TWRP recovery and perform a back. This is a nandroid ... a complete image of your phone at that point that can be put back if necessary. Copy those files to a PC. I'm not sure where TWRP stores them. I use CWM.

Next, copy whatever you want to keep from your phone to a folder on a PC. Backup your text messages if you want to keep them (I use SMS backup and restore. It's pretty simple and easy to use.) Backup any email messages stored only on the phone. I don't do this as all my email accounts (way too many ) are IMAP. And ... backup your launcher settings to a file. Copy those to the PC too.

Flash the factory image to your phone. (Don't worry, we'll walk you though that when the time comes). Power on and it's like a brand new phone. Register it using the same Google account. Make sure it's connected to Wifi and log into the play store once to accept the terms. Now go for coffee. Google is going to push back all your apps and *some* settings. Depending on what you had installed on the old phone, it could take a while. It should be done by the third donut. Setup any email accounts again, restore your SMS messages and email and then restore your launcher settings. Finally, copy all your data and media from your old phone to the new one. There will be things that will need to be tweaked, but you should be as close to the old phone as you can get.

It usually takes me about 2 hours.

Would you take a few minutes and check this out for me? It looks like it would do what I want easier.

I DID manage to root it originally with the Wugs kit. I don't have Wugs on this new 8.1 machine yet but starting it from scratch is something I've done before.

Now, this vid is using it to update, losing no data, from 4.4.2 to 4.4.3 but I assume all would be the same once the Google posts the factory images for the N4. I'm in no hurry.

-Would Everything be the same on the phone after this as they say it would be?
-It seems it would leave me with the new version but Unrooted, is that correct? And yes, that's fine, I know I could root again with the Wugs.

Thank you in advance for your patience and help,

Yo Loon. ;)

I've sniffed around some on The YouTuber.

Even nOOb me gets that the aforementioned no wipe method is probably NOT ideal (at the least) for this big of an update.

I'm also not seeing any easy way to quickly back up and restore everything.

And you can do it all in 2 hrs?

No offense, but 2 hrs for whut? My N4 doesn't have anything that I know of that really needs fixing. (Outside of not having Lte which isn't really an issue and wouldn't be "fixed" with the Lolli anyway.)

2 hrs.? The hell with that. It's JUST the way I want it now.

Hell, it still has 4.4.2 on it for exactly the same reason.

I don't think I'm gonna fix something that ain't broke til it gets alot easier than 2 hours.

PS And my phone must know when it's being talked about. I notice this morning that for some reason, my Update Availablle notification isn't there anymore, Praise be to the Phone Gods! And I didn't do anything. It's still in the Noti tray if you open it up but it's not there Now anyway starring at me 24/7.

Thank you Greatly though for trying to help me out, I appreciate it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating "everyone must upgrade" at all. I will ... but I'm going to wait until my Nexus 6 arrives and I've got my shi ... um ... stuff transferred over. ;)

Then, I'll let you know if it's worth it. In the mean time, don't worry about it. 4.4.2 is perfectly capable and the N4 is a great phone. (one of the best I've owned).
