Root Custom recovery?

I know this should probably be in the all things root section but that forum is desolate. No one ever responds. I want to root my Galaxy tab 4 SM-T530NU (wifi only) solely for the purpose of gaining back control of the ext sd card, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make a full backup image in case I come across any brick problems. Do I need a custom recovery to do so and is one available for my device?

I believe this is your device, if not just search for your device on the TWRP site.
They have the installation instructions as well. After you're done you can backup your ROM and anything else from the recovery.

This is actually for the carrier version. I have the wifi only version. So far I can't find a custom recovery for it.

Sorry for the move, Prince Corwin, but housekeeping rulez require that posts go where they're supposed to be... not necessarily in the most visible location :eek:

You would likely want to look for an archived version of ClockworkMod (or TWRP) Recovery for your tablet. And that could be just about anywhere. But to answer your question: rooting to access your ext SD card wouldn't necessitate a Recovery image but yes, you would absolutely need one for backups.

Hey man, I ran across your post and thought I would help you out with a clear, usable reply. I am still looking for a custom ROM for my Galaxy Tab 4 (SM-T530NU). Cyanogenmod is available but sound and camera not working yet (http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/development/rom-unofficial-cyanogenmod-11-0-t2881588). I just swapped for my previous Galaxy Tab 2 running Dhollmen ROM. Anyway, on to the usable part. I had to do a little backtracking but here you go:

Note: I have found that SM-T530 ready utilities, recoveries, etc. work fine on the SM-T530NU. NU apparently is North American region.
