Root Stuck between Rooted and Un-rooted

You guys/gals are my last resort, (unfortunately I should of stopped by first and avoided my current situation) so put your thinking caps on.

I had to pull an old phone (EVO4g) out of retirement after my wife tried to drown her S3. Went to the Un-rooting directions by Mike Stoney and OCN and was able to get S-On, but that's where the process stopped. The phone sees the PC36img.zip file (If your radio version is 2.15.00.12.19, then download this file: PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3_Radio_ 2.15.00.12.19_NV_2.33_release_234563_signed.zip )

but will not run it. So at this point I am stuck with the following:

S-On
HBoot - 6.17.0001
Radio - 2.15.00.12.19

I currently have the Thundershock rom on the phone with the Smelkus recovery. I've tried running the PC36img.zip file thru the recovery with no luck.

I guess I am stuck now between rooted and unrooted so If anyone has any suggestions, ideas, long-shots please let me know. I had another EVO that my wife is currently using so this is more of a challenge than a necessity for me. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this over

what does it say when it tries to run the pc36img file? does it give an error? have you tried a ruu rather then the pc36img file?

curious as to why you needed to unroot?

edit: here is the ruu if you need it:http://d-h.st/PsR

First off, thanks for trying to help me out here, this forum was always the best in my opinion...:)

Well, unfortunately I assumed that I needed to unroot the EVO to be able to get it back onto the Sprint network. After I achieved S-On I found that was not the case so at that point I was stuck with S-On but unable to flash the PC36img.zip file.

If I would of asked beforehand I could of saved myself a lot of grief, and left the phone the way it was (rooted) and still have been able to get it re-activated with Sprint.......:(

Anyhow, the good news is the wife's S3 is back up and running after 72 hours in the rice bag, but I still wanted to try and get the EVO back to a functioning condition, hence my post.

When I run any PC36img.zip file now, the phone appears to see that it's there, it just won't open it. When I try to run it thru the recovery it say's:

Install from sdcard....
Finding update package......
Opening update package....
E:Can't open /sdcard/PC36img.zip
(bad)

Installation aborted

No problem Ocn, this EVO 4g is a low priority challenge at this point. Gotta say though I do like the upgrades to the site, gives it fresh feel. Tried the ruu in your above post and still getting this:

Install from sdcard....
Finding update package......
Opening update package....
E:Can't open /sdcard/PC36img.zip
(bad)

Any PC36img file I try to run I get that same message

Installed HTC sync and it could not locate my device, tried connecting every which way but nothing worked.

Will try a different card tomorrow, and keep you posted, Thanks again

well the ruu should not need the sd card. it is run on your computer and not on your phone. and the fact that htc sync is not recognizing your phone could be the issue. maybe try and uninstall htc sync and reinstall it.

sorry, the holidays kept me away from the forums, but i'm back now.

did you get this resolved?

No resolution, with the Holidays and all, it kind of took a back seat. Happy New Year by the way Ocn.

When I tried to run the ruu you suggested HTC Sync will not recognize my phone, (it shows no device detected) so that route appears to be temporarily blocked or a dead end.

You're trying to install the file in recovery - that's not how it gets installed. You have to boot into HBOOT and let it install the zip for you automatically there.

Thanks Capn, I will try that and get back to you guys and let you know the results. Won't be till later today, on our way to a B-Day party. Thanks again for the quick response.

Not sure if I have ever used HBoot just wanted to run this by you guys to make sure I'm on the right track so I have the RUU on my sd card, I boot into HBoot, then the PC36img file is picked up automatically and hopefully installs ???
Sorry, I am trying to find out where you're at exactly :)
Which ruu? The one that is run from the computer, or the one you need to rename and run through the bootloader.

And in answer to your question, yes, Hboot will auto install a correctly renamed PC36img file. eg: PC36img.zip not PC36img.zip.zip. And only one file named as such should be on the root of the sd card. Having more than one PC36img file on the card will make your phone get up and run away not work. :)

I am going to be trying the RUU that Ocn recommended on 11/20/2014 - edit: here is the ruu if you need it: http://d-h.st/PsR

Capt. said "You have to boot into HBOOT and let it install the zip for you automatically there", so I assumed I would load it on to my SD card, rename it to PC36...... and try it, I am not familiar with running it from the computer ???

Honestly, neither am I (about running it through the computer---I have never done it) I've only done the Hboot install of various pc36img files, sorry.
So perhaps Ocn, or Capt can input on the ruu from the computer bit:)

The very first .zip file in your OP is run through Hboot. Heh, Now I just realized you posted you tried it through recovery. :ahhh:

Just ran the ruu that Ocn suggested in HBoot and not sure what is supposed to happen next, I was in HBoot and the phone recognized the PC36....zip it appeared to be loading the file as there was a progress bar on the top right hand side of the screen, after that the phone just went back to the standard recovery screen showing:

S - On
HBoot version, etc, etc, etc

My question is how do I find out or verify what happened or are there further steps I need to take???

I thought, (need verification from Ocn) that the file he posted is the one run from the computer.
Have you tried running the one you posted in your first post via Hboot?
And your hboot info is still the same as what you posted before? :
S-On
HBoot - 6.17.0001
Radio - 2.15.00.12.19

No, I did not try to run that file in post #1 thru HBoot, only recovery. I just ran the ruu from post #4 and it appeared to work or at least load, I'm just not sure how to validate whether it did anything or not.

My HBoot info did not change so my guess is that probably nothing happened.
