Dragon Age: Inquisition (video from PAX)

My PC has a big red turbo button, so I should be all set.

are you able to customize your characters appearance like you can in Skyrim?

customization's are key for me when playing these types of games. I like looking like a total bad bad man.

I'm sure I read an article about customer characterisation somewhere but I can't seem to find it. If you have twitter maybe ask them as they seem keen to answer questions and take suggestions:)

Yeah I'm waiting for it as well. I think I'm one of the minority though. DA2 wasn't as good as origins but I still enjoyed it. Shoot me if you want to but I'll never complain about a game which gives me 50+ hours. Maybe the gameplay wasn't up to scratch but I enjoyed the story.

I enjoyed the heck out of DA2 also - you weren't alone.

OK, this came out Tuesday and I had it pre-ordered. So far it is pretty awesome but I have been so tired from work I have only played through a small part of the first area. But here's a quick bullet point review in case anyone is on the fence.

- The graphics are fantastic, if your system can handle them

- The game looks to be epic in length.

- The story is very engaging so far.

- Music and sound effects are very good except for one really weird "level-up" sound.

- The new controls and combat take some getting used to but I think they will be OK.

- Combat does still seem kinda clunky though. But we'll see. I only have like 3 special moves and haven't experimented with the other characters yet.

/will post when I have played a bit more.

//you should go buy it

I've been unsure about buying this one,

My PC has struggled with a few of the big games graphics wise recently and im not sure i'd be able to run this on anything but lowest settings.

I'm running an FX 6300 3.5ghx 6 CPU
8GB RAM
and HD 7850 1GB graphics card

Think the graphics card is probably going to let me down mostly

Are you managing to run it in highest graphics settings?
What spec are you running?

Core i7 3770 3.5 GHz (OC: 4.6GHz)
32 GB RAM
GTX Titan* 6GB (OC: +244MHz clcok/+200MHz Bus)
Samsung SSD 840 Pro for Windows
Samsung SSD 830 for games.
Win 7 pro x64

*(roughly equivalent to a GTX 970 or GTX 780 maybe?)

So I have a pretty beefy system but I play on a 30" monitor at 2650x1600 and cannot run everything on Ultra at anywhere near a good framerate. I run the game ok (50-60fps) on High setting but it makes the fan in my GTX Titan sound like a jet engine.

So yeah, graphically this is a pretty demanding game. But, I suspect some of it is bad optimization that will be fixed soon.

Still most people dont play a that high a screen resolution. I suspect at 1920x1080 I could easily run it on ultra. I would imagine you could maybe run it on low or medium but check the min specs before you buy. They are pretty high.

It looks like you are just below "recommended" but well above minimum. There are a lot of setting you can turn down though to make the game run smooth. There is a slider you can use to set the "resolution quality" (not even sure what that means) that can help you tweak the game to your system.

OK so an update on the gameplay and story.

I think I am about halfway through now -- somewhere around 20-40 hours. (it seems I am in ACT II)

Super fast review:
  • The story is engaging, perhaps the best of the series
  • Characters are great (funny, grumpy, ...real).
  • Music is phenomenal.
  • Graphics are superb
  • Combat as a DW rogue was absolutely painful. Supposedly gets much more fun in late game. I personally could not stand it.
  • Rerolled a mage, much happier.
  • Got used to the combat system now, it's pretty fun
  • The game is massive and should easily hit 80-100hrs playtime.
8.7/10
(pending the second half/ending)

Tips:

  • On the equipment screen you can change character with a little arrow on the upper right of the screen by their name.
  • Leave the Hinterlands as soon as you're bored, you can always go back. Follow the selected main quest (Might be to visit Val Royeau). The story really get going after the Hinterlands.
  • Don't go to the Mire until level 8 or so.
  • If an area is too hard, dont worry about leaving and returning later. Mobs just a level or two above you can mean a world of hurt. Some locations in a given area have certain parts that are much harder than others.
  • You will have to choose a side at one point, just go with it. You can replay again someday.
  • If you use Dragon Age Keep and care about how your characters looked and decisions that were made make sure DAI has properly imported the correct Keep slot.
  • There is a weird cutscene framerate bug that makes cutscenes VERY stuttery. This can be fixed with a simple line of config added to origin. However, make sure not to use the fix when creating a new character, just apply it once you have been through the intro and can save/quit/load.
Some tips from: (possible very minor spoilers) http://www.reddit.com/r/dragonage/comments/2nljyd/a_few_tips_from_someone_who_has_put_90_hours_into/

Gripes

  • The interface was clearly designed for a console. I wish they spent a few weeks and added a few more PC specific touches here and there. Nevertheless, you get used to it.
  • Having only 8 combat actions is just dumb
  • If you used tactical mode from previous games, you will very much dislike the new one (I did not use tactical mode in previous games)
  • There is a weird "level up" sound that breaks immersion.
  • It's weird that even animals like bears scale levels with you.
