Root Rooting WITHOUT USB. I know it's been posted before, I've searched.

I also have a thunderbolt with a non working usb port. I have been following this thread to see how Branndon got connected. I tried an ssh server on the phone I got fre3vo on the sdcard but could not transfer it or chmod it because of the permission denied. If anyone has any other information on this it would be great.

Scotty, all:

Okay, I got curious about all of this myself and decided to install SSHDroid and play with things to see how they work.

Bear in mind, I don't have a TBolt, but I can try to shed some light on how I thing this might all be accomplished given what Scotty outlined up-top.

First off, if you're going to use Scotty's commands up-top, you're going to need the files that he referenced copied over to your phone. Typically, this is done by using adb to push the files over the USB cable (or using adb wireless if you are rooted, which of course is not relevant in this case).

So, you can either download the files directly from your phone via the internet (i.e., directly from their sources or indirectly via a Dropbox account, etc.).

You can also and alternatively use SSHDroid with a secure FTP client such as WinSCP (WinSCP :: Free SFTP and FTP client for Windows).

I've gotten WinSCP to work with SSHDroid (its basically a Windows-based secure FTP session) to drag and drop files.

Then, I used the ssh mode in a putty client session to navigate around in a telnet session on my Android device (a Galaxy Nexus in this case).

So, if you can get all of your files transferred to a folder on the Android device, it should be pretty simple to format and enter the appropriate commands that Scotty outlined above to get you going.

Make sense?

thanks a bunch scary... ive been wanting to try and figure this out,but life has been pretty busy for me these last few weeks, between work and other stuff thats going on.

over the weekend ill try and get sshdroid installed on the TB and give it a go.

im alittle confused about the files needing to be on the phone,however... put them in a folder on the sd? dispearse them all onto the root? will that change the adb commands any?

hopefully when i start messing with it,it will become more obvious what needs done :)

hopefully we can get this figured out,and you can root and install a permanent patched hboot the "old skool" way. :D

i will also extend the same offer to you... if you are anywhere near enuff to dayton,oh to meet me,or if youd like to ship me your phone,id be happy to s-off it with my xtc clip :)

No problem, Scotty :).

Yeah, you won't be using adb at all for this, I'm afraid...(unless I'm missing something about how to get ssh to work).

Since we're launching an ssh (secure shell), you've left the MS/DOS island (or wherever you've launched the shell from) and you're basically just telneting into the phone's telnet server (or ssh server in this case).

So, you need to transfer the files to the phone (i.e., ultimately in /data/local, etc.) so you can run fre3vo, etc like you outlined). You'll just be using the secure shell (ssh) instead of an adb shell to initiate your commands.

Actually, if you were careful and wanted to, you could simply start an Android Terminal telnet session on your phone and execute the commands that way, too (but waaaay too tricky to do all of this from the phone--having a big keyboard to type on and a screen you can see makes a world of difference).

If you have any questions, just ping me via PM, or email, or call my cell if you still have my number (I'll send it you on PM just to be sure you've still got it).

Cheers!

I think I owe you all a reply. Due to Verizon's killing of the grandfathered data plans, we decided to upgrade to the s3 about a week ago. This means I'll be getting the s3 when it comes in, and my wife will take over the thunderbolt. She doesn't want me ""messing with her phone". Married guys might understand this, but I can't go forward with rooting it anymore. I hope this thread was not for nothing, and that it can actually help those in my situation. I'm sorry if any of you feel that I wasted your time with this, I didn't think this would have happened.

Well... any chance I could root a Sprint HTC Evo 4G (Supersonic) with a broken micro-USB port? Would be awesome if I could get it on a nice AOSP ROM... but as of the moment, getting it rooted is a tough obstacle. Would be epic!

Build Number/ Software Number 5.07.651
Android Version 2.3.5

You might check in the EVO forums, but there is not a way to root without a USB that I'm aware of :(
