Help Retrieve CP message?

Hi, folks. When I was having problems with my phone (like being unable to send/rcv SMS, not getting notifications — not being able to dial 611, much less talk to a droid at MetroPCS), I finally bit the bullet and nuked the phone. FDR is usually the absolute last resort; I've had nothing but hassles from an FDR. But things have been running well enough since then — except for not being able to get certain MMS messages. Metro sent me two CP messages before I FDRed the phone and I made the changes. However, those two messages appeared again after I FDRed the phone; without paying attention, I tossed the CP message app/svc/whatever out of the app list before reapplying the msgs. Initially, I was thinking, "The messages didn't change anything the first time; and FDRing the phone should have put things back to rights." However, I now can't download those MMS messages. Last night my wife tried to send me a photo; no go. Tonight my sister sent me something; again, no go. I was trying to find where those messages might be so I can apply them and see if they really change my experience. I've seen web pages with various takes on the proper MMS and Internet setups; however, it appears you can't change the base APN data. So is there some way I can retrieve these CP messages, or do I need to create my own APN — and if I create my own APN, how do I get the phone to use it? Thanks, all.

Not being able to change the APN is new to me. Seems like you have run into a few troubles with messages as I believe I might have replied to a previous post of yours. Since you have exhausted some of your options, have you thought about rooting the phone and throwing a stable rom on there? Roms can be located @ http://androidforums.com/forums/galaxy-light-all-things-root.2490/ and it looks like there was a recent, ODIN flashable stock 4.4.2 image posted. Those could be other options for you. Although I do endorse custom recoveries and ODIN flashing when needed, I cannot say it will work for your phone as I do not have your phone. Check out that subforum again and ask around. You could find your fix there. GL

Well, the APN is barely legible and apparently all disabled as to alterations; at least, that's how I perceive the dark gray of the listing under the heading Edit access point. And the one menu item for this display reads Discard. I'll have to think about rooting the phone, although that brings up the prospect of (1) backing up everything on internal memory as best as possible, (2) finding and running replacements for the things I get from the native ROM, (3) etc., etc., etc. I took a look at the link you provided; the results appear somewhat inconsistent to me; and I worry about those who can no longer use the phone as a phone after rooting. I'm old school; I talk to people on the phone.

Let's see if I can clear a few things up. Rooting the phone (via following the directions in multiple threads on that forum I lnked) does not erase data. You are simply installing a Custom Recovery and flashing SuperSU. It is not necessary to flash a custom ROM as you are having problems with yours. Rooting a phone does not automatically force you to change ROMs therefore you would not need to find replacements for the things you get from the native rom. Not sure what your "etc" issues are but we can answer them if you wish.

This thread explains the process multiple times about how to root the phone and the users' experiences. http://androidforums.com/threads/root-metro-pcs-gl-with-kitkat.875971/
This thread gives you specific instructions - http://androidforums.com/threads/recovery-team-win-recovery-twrp-2-7-0-0.836658/#post6492467

If you read and follow the directions correctly, you will not be left with a phone that cannot be used as a phone after rooting. The rooting process is not what caused that issue. The issue some users ran into is when they made an error by not reading and flashed a ROM for a different model phone.
