Help FoxFi: "Your carrier has blocked WiFi mode in the latest phone update"

I'm confused, are you guys saying you can't hotspot anymore??

I have a Droid Maxx XT1080, i am NOT on unlimited data, nor am i on a tethering plan or whatever that is, i don't even see that option on Verizon when i look at my account.

But i can use the HotSpot app that came with the phone and connect my laptop and surf through it no problems whatsover.

Software version 4.4.4 and i just got the OTA this week as well, still works, just tried it.

I believe that the ruling was that Verizon could not block tethering apps that worked from being installed from any smartphone app stores, and they could not add charges to user accounts who used those apps for tethering on capped data plans. See What Verizon's FCC tethering settlement means to you (FAQ) | Mobile - CNET News

The FoxFi app isn't being blocked by Verizon - it's just not working in Android 4.4. Remember that the same thing happened with the Maxx and FoxFi when it was first released - eventually FoxFi had an update that worked under Jellybean. My guess is that FoxFi/PDANet likes people buying their app, so they will keep trying to make it work.

I don't think that is true. I think Verizon IS blocking FoxFi and what happens is FoxFi finds an exploit to hide hotspot from Verizon detection. So if that is what you mean by "its just not working yet" then yes -- FoxFi has yet to find a way to bypass Verizon's block.

I have a limited plan and they are blocking me which seems in direct violation of the FCC ruling. They say my plan does not meet the minimum requirement -- I only get 2GB. However I do not need any more than that. I hardly ever tether but whould like to occasionally do it.

Finally activated the new RAZR maxx hd thinking that either USB tether or Bluetooth would work. I cannot get either to connect. I was afraid of this. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot would be appreciated.

Just curious did you activate the Razr Maxx HD that came out in 2012? Or one of the new Droids from Motorola (Turbo, Moto X, Moto G, etc.). Either way have you tried PDA Net? It's working for me right now on my Razr Maxx HD on a Macbook.

The phone was built in October of 2012. I used to use PDAnet and can't remember why I switched but I think it was because I couldn't get it to work with a new phone I got a couple of years ago. The RaxrMaxx is running 4.4.2. Encouraging to hear. I am using a Mac mini. I have pdanet on it and tried to install it to the phone via the mac but it didn't work. I have also tried to connect using Bluetooth but no avail.

I am an owner of the Stratosphere 2 and I've been dying from not having my Foxfi. Today I downloaded the update and fought with the app for hours before I finally found a work around.

1. Start Foxfi and accept the vpn security thing. (it's likely gonna fail, but that's okay)
2. Make sure your wifi is turned on and that it doesn't connect to anything.
3. Change your hotspot name and set a password.
4. Start Foxfi, then immediately pull up the built in hotspot app and turn it on. This allows the Foxfi app to finish pulling up and set up a hotspot.
5. This is where you may have trouble. While your pc is trying to connect, you're going to have to refresh your IP address. I have an application on my pc that works with my wireless usb to monitor wireless networks. (REALTEK Wireless LAN Utility) If you don't have a utility like the above, try refreshing your IP manually address by following this link:

https://wiki.csuchico.edu/confluence/display/help/Release and Renew an IP address in Windows 7

Any questions, email me: barnwellrd@gmail.com

Is there any way you could do a youtube video of how to make this work? That would be REALLY helpful. Thanks! Happy New Year.

OK, I have VZW UDP and have Sony Z3v, it's at KitKat 4.4.4 and foxfi (on which I greatly depend) wasn't working when 1st I got this device. I emailed the apps developer and they told me to go into the apps menu, press "Hash Code," enter "TEST," and then try turning it on. It worked like a charm. Dunno about other models (other than the Nexus 6 on which it doesn't work, but that's lollipop 5.1 already), but it works on my sony and did on my razr, and GS4.

I switched phones but kept my key for foxfi and that solved it...I have a foxfi enabled hotspot again!

I have a Motorola Droid Turbo with KitKat 4.4.4, and ever since I switched from the Droid Razr last November FoxFi has been returning the message "Your carrier has blocked WiFi mode in the latest phone update". I tried the above approach (entering TEST under Hash Code), and now the wifi hotspot works totally fine! Thanks internet! Or more specifically, all of you guys being willing to share your problems and solutions.

What kinds of problems could this method create though?

I'm happy this has helped a couple of you, it truly makes my day!

I dunno of any problems that'd be anywhere close to immediate calvinair. However, the only possible thing I could foresee would likely need a few things to first be true of your sisituation. One, you weren't a heavy data username your usage dramatically goes up one month and consistently stays there. However, if you live in a metro (congested area full of data users), the aforementioned dramatic increase in usage may become scrutinized. That's the only thing I can think of where the carrier would put you under a microscope. If they find they no longer want your money they'll simply stop serving you. So, that's the worst thing that could happen, they'd claim you violated terms of service, possibly make you pay ETF, and that'd be it. However, I typically use at very least 30gb a month on 1 UDP (usually upwards of 50gb though), and have never had a problem. Of course I live in an area of only a quarter million, so no congestion.

Just got this error today, I have a non-carrier phone with non-carrier firmware, and a tethering plan, my regular WiFi hotspot button works just fine, I use FoxFi because it re-enables if for some reason my phone (Galaxy S6) crashes, I checked firmware version and it hasn't been updated.

I think FoxFi must have screwed something up.

The hash code TEST did not work for my Maxx 4.4.4 Verizon unlimited data. It's been a while since FoxFi has worked and there are currently no plans for it to ever work again on this model phone. My workaround for a hotspot while tethering either using PDA.NET or Easy Tether by using this free, open source program, virtual wifi router. com. You may need an wifi usb adapter but it's a solid and stable alternative for creating a hotspot while tethering.

I'm having the same problem I have been using PDAnet for years now and randomly on Friday November 20th when I would go to turn on the WiFi hot spot it would be able to turn it on and it would come up with the error that I needed to subscribe to Verizons Hotspot. I have a Galaxy S6 and it has worked perfectly since i bought the phone until now.

I have a note 4 and s5. I was just using the app last night and then just morning couldn't connect, to either phone. So I was wondering if maybe Verizon finally found a way to block it? Or if this was just a glitch

VZW is trying soooo hard to get us to give up the unlimited. First jack up the price, then a few days later kill the app. My foxfi finally died on my Note2 this morning but is still working on my old Galaxy Nexus on my other line. So looks like I need to hit craigs list and find another Nexus. I live in a dialup only area and the thought of going back to that after all of these years kills me.
