Root Need help updating new 2nd hand phone

Ok....so tried to update software OTA and it failed again.

Also, I'm a little confused with my backup/restore? I backed up phone via htc back up (not helium, as advised)

When setting up after factory reset, i get asked about google account and fill in details, and i can see in status bar that apps start downloading etc

When i get to section where it says restore phone from back up, it again asks me sing in, this time to HTC account manager?

Now I have tried tried and tried again to enter password to no avail, clicked 'reset password' option and waited for email reset notification which doesn't happen.

Went on to HTC page on computer and followed their trouble shooting, requested password email reset, no joy.

Its rather frustrating - it appears my phone has restored half backup (apps/wallpaper of my sons) but not contacts, messages, calendar data.

So I skip set up page with regards to back up and phone take me to homepage/blinkfeed....

When i try restore to back up once phone has loaded via settings and or HTC back up app, i get "no back up available "(even though i can see the back up in dropbox with the time/date from last nights back up)

I know I have a HTC account as I only backuped/reset/restored phone about a month ago and all was working fine!!!!!!

Any idea how i can retrieve back up from dropbox and restore phone as it seems something is not communicating somewhere??

Really not good from HTC. Surely when you see an option 'back up phone data now' the phone should back up!! Poor form for what ever reason, should of used helium as you advised!!!!!!

Any way, if contacts and stuff are gone they're gone so be it.

What do you reckon the next step is in trying to resolve my original problem? As Im ready to go play cricket with this phone and buy a new one ( and never buy second hand again lol) !!!

Thanks again for your time and patience.

OK, now I know for sure that my next advice is correct and matches my suspicion.

The RUU didn't install correctly.

Put the 0P6BIMG.zip file back on the sd card - verify the md5 after it's on the phone with AFV.

Redo the RUU and factory data reset.

When the phone comes up, don't give it any account information - so nothing tries to install apps.

Back key or home will eventually get you out of the setup wizard. (You'll return to it later, you won't miss out.)

Go directly instead to the system update.

Watch carefully - does the message reappear.

@saltire said that you had to verify the md5 sum and to rename it and he was absolutely correct - that is the purpose of the terminal commands. :)

Yes, as yesterday, the 0P6BIMG.zip file goes on to the root of the sd card.

And once on phone, check the md5 with AFV (instructions earlier, I believe they should be page 3 to you if you're using our normal forum defaults).

Yesterday, I babbled about using AFV as optional.

Today, I want to make sure you use it for the md5 check.

If the sd card is going dodgy on top of everything else, you don't want a bad file there. AFV will help you make sure that the 0P6BIMG.zip is ok.

Make sure that you have a 50% charge or better before starting the RUU.

We don't want to get the finish line and fail over power ok.

And btw - let's try the factory data reset from inside the stock recovery.

After the RUU has flashed - boot into bootloader, go to HBOOT screen.

Instead of choosing FACTORY RESET - choose RECOVERY.

Inside recovery - do the following:
  • wipe data/factory reset
  • wipe cache
  • reboot system now
Then proceed to boot up, skip setup wizard, and attempt the update.

And if the update fails again - we can jump directly to Lollipop and the latest other firmware via an RUU as well.

Need the terminal command to rename it -

Code:
mv 0P6BIMG_M8_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_HTC_Europe_4.16.401.10_Radio_1.25.214500021.06G_20.68.4196t.01_F_release_417809_signed.zip 0P6BIMG.zip
^ Drag mouse all the way to the right to get the full command for copy/paste

Flash it twice.

Correct md5 is 4e03845aeab375746b4553e610047680

And I just realized - I was asleep when I gave the install instruction.

I said, just reboot.

That's not right, and I don't have an excuse, so I plead temporary insanity. @saltire was right.

To install the 0P6BIMG.zip -

Power off phone.

Hold volume down while powering on.

White bootloader screen appears - let go, update will begin.

(You've been there, it's your screen shot in post #4.)

Ok so after rooting file to SD card and powering off, when i power back on agin with volume button down, this is the first screen i get, no other screen....do i just click fast boot?
