Maybe. .. Empire of the East? Fred Saberhagen.

Lord, it's been thirty years since I've read that... can't even tell you any plot. Good book, though. Loosely tied with the Book of Swords series, as I recall.

So I've finally discovered Neil Gaiman (i know, about time). I crushed Neverwhere on a plan trip couple weeks ago. Awesome story, tried to watch the BBC series on hulu but it was *exactly* the same, same dialogue word for word. Which isn't a bad thing, just had nothing to offer days after finishing the book. Saw him post about a sequel, then realized book is 20 years old, lol.

About to start American Gods.

Turned into a whole, big series, I can't keep up with it. Read another series by O S Card, can't remember what it was, sort of a seeding of Earth type thing. Some of his got kind of weird to me.

I like Jim Butcher. He had a season of Dresden Files on tv. I like the series. Haven't kept up with it though. I think his later books in the series may have suffered because of his Codex Alera.

Now THAT is a cool series!

Then there is the Beka Cooper series, by Tamora Pierce. What a trip!

Speaking of Andre (Alice) Norton, her Beastmaster, was one of my favorites, read a bunch of them coming up, along with R.A. Heinlein.

His Lazurus Long character is a trip. First met him in Methusalah's Children.
Liked The Moon is a harsh mistress. Wonder whatever happened to Mike?

Eddings, the couple, put out some great books, The Redemption of Althalus, comes to mind. The series, The Belgariad. And the Elenium series, to start.

Then there is Raymond Feist, can't keep up with him, Jimmy the hand was cool.

ok, that's enough...

To find out Mike's fate, read "The Cat Who Walks Through Walls" and "To Sail Beyond The Sunset".

About to start American Gods.

The TV series wasn't up to much... which wasn't their fault they just didn't have the budget to match Neil's imagination.

BUT

BBC Radio did an amazing dramatization of it, and the soundscape there is amazing. In the UK Radio4 extra have repeated it from time to time, and I have a feeling its available to purchase...

Also they then did Good Omens (which he wrote with Terry Pratchett) which has an amazing stella cast, and is worth anyones time.

Were they hesitant to give him the technology? it sounds very much like a book I read recently but damned if I can remember the title off the top of my head

I like Neil Gaiman, but it seems like he used up all of his ideas in the Sandman series. I've read all of his adult books except the newest one, and they all are variations of themes he started in the Sandman comics.

Stardust was a decent film adaptation of one of his stories. Coraline also.

You could tell about the budget, but it seemed entertaining. It was just too soon for me, I had just finished the book.

They were!! I'm so excited someone has even an inkling of what that might be!!!!

They were hesitant, then only gave him enough to equip his troops with basic firearms. I seem to remember the 'elders' made him meticulously clean up evidence of the weapons...

I liked it, but not as much as everybody else, I guess. I thought it was cool seeing how he managed the various crises, but I never felt like the outcome was in doubt, so I never felt any real tension or excitement.

Anybody else think Matt Damon is totally miscast for the movie? I know he's smart in real life, but I just don't see him as the brilliant botanist/engineer from the book.

I get depressed when I go into one anymore... So expensive.

I'm pretty much stuck to my ebooks now: I can carry a library around and I don't have to have tons of physical space to keep them.

It's worth the read for the mythos. That said, probably better off just watching first, that way you will only be surprised.

I still love having a packed bookshelf. I like to buy the physical books and pirate the ebooks (sue me)
