Did you guys see this?

http://phandroid.com/2015/05/21/google-project-fi-invites/
Google is entering the mobile carrier space, if you haven’t heard, with a solution that they’re calling “Project Fi”. Upon making that huge announcement they began accepting applications for beta invites… and today, Google has RSVP’d by claiming they’ll get to everyone by mid-Summer.

Here’s the complete e-mail:

Hello!

Thanks for requesting an invite to Project Fi. We’re really excited that you’re interested in trying our service! Over the past few weeks, we’ve been happy to bring the first customers onto Project Fi and the initial feedback has been very positive.

We’re sending invites as quickly as we can, while ensuring a high-quality experience. Given the number of requests we’ve received, we currently estimate that it will take until mid-summer to get to everyone.
In the coming weeks we’ll have a way for you to check the status of your invite – stay tuned for more information.

Thanks again for your interest in Project Fi. We’ll get you an invite as soon as we can!
–The Project Fi team

We’re assuming that Google will have a LOT more to share with us at Google IO next week. Phandroid will be there to cover the event live, so make sure you stay tuned to this site for the latest breaking news. In the meantime let us know if you’ll become a Project Fi customer in the comments and for even more, visit the Project Fi Forums atAndroidForums.com

It's a bit of a tease to have received an email to say "this isn't the email you're waiting for," but it's nice to have an update.

Who here is still waiting?

Yeah, Fi seems like such a great idea, and I'm really excited about what it may do for the mobile industry as a whole... but I just don't think it's for me (or @Sealy64 or @Crashdamage or any number of other folks who have done their research and already found a plan or arrangement that works for them).

I do hope that some of Fi's ideas will find their way to the other carriers so that we can all benefit.

No interest until Google offers Fi shared/family plans. My current shared/family plan is a better deal.
,,,but I just don't think it's for me (or @Sealy64 or @Crashdamage or any number of other folks who have done their research and already found a plan or arrangement that works for them).

The biggest issue I've seen is the price of Google Fi:

When you use over 1.5GB it's cheaper to get a plan from Cricket/Boost/MetroPCS.
For low usage Ting is cheaper.
T-Mobile has the $30 5GB plan if you don't talk much.
Several carriers have cheaper family plans, like Cricket (and Ting depending on your usage).

Agreed, it's a great idea but it has to appeal to enough people and be competitive.

^ I could also see Fi having the advantage if your usage varies from month to month. Say I use 1GB in May, but 5GB in June, and maybe an average of 2.5-3GB. Most other carriers, you'd be stuck paying for a minimum of 5GB/mo regardless of how much you actually used. With Fi, you only pay for the data that you actually consume. That could be a big deal.

I've been doing exactly that for 2+ years, it is a big deal :cashdroid: :cashdroid: :)

I didn't consider a huge change in data each month, yeah that could get some people to switch over to Fi if they're usually on the low end with occasional high data usage.

I'm hoping when they open it up to other phones the rates will go down, maybe have the base talk/text rate at $15? I could see more people being interested then with a price point of talk & text with 1GB for $25 :)

You also could buy your average amount monthly and occasionally pay an overage. $10 to $15/GB overage once and a while can be less expensive overall than paying an extra $5 or $10 every month for data you do not use.

I just checked my status & a bit of an update/different message:

Invite Status:
Expect your invite in 12 or more weeks.

So,I guess the upside is now I'm in the "definite maybe" status, depending on how one interprets 12 or more weeks.
Or,the pessimist might equate this w/the following:

I have a phone on this $30 5GB plan - and DO talk a lot. Google voice with Hangouts dialer, voip
I have to TRY to hit that 5GB each month, even with lots of YouTube
Only use the 100voice in bad data areas (less then LTE)

There is no issue with Google fi. It's simply not for everyone at this point.

In time as more and more climb aboard and the bugs are mostly squashed for the regular public, then you should expect to see different tiers.

No one has to sign up for fi. For me it's a no brainer. I use less than half a gig a month, so in my case it's perfect, plus I get free tethering and the best carriers in my environment to choose from....

A question I have is what happens in a month where you need more data? Does Google merely charge you (and when do they charge you?) for the extra data or is your data cut off?

  • What happens if I go over my data budget?
Project Fi will first alert you if you're getting close to your data budget. If you go over, you'll still get full-speed data and data is charged at the same $10 per GB rate. For example, if you go over your data budget by 350MB, $3.50 will be added to your next bill.
