Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I call them tractor trailor cars. People that turn one of these
cult.png

like they are driving one of these:
tractor-trailer-driver-jobs-descriptions.jpg

I can corner. I used to forget I had a longbed pickup and hit the curb with the rear wheels. The Tacoma does corner. I don't like those idiots either. They don't seem to recognize they are around the corner and use the gas pedal. I have to watch so I don't rear end them. Most of the cars have power steering, so why it it such an effort?

Motorcycle riders probably have the same problem. If you wait for these slowpokes, you are liable to get rear-ended from oncoming traffic in your lane.

I think it's visibility. I have the seat as high as it can go, and still want a cushion to see over the hood of the Acura. (The Vulcan is over 6 ft.tall) My friend has a Hyundae of the same vintage, she is short and CAN'T see over the hood. I wouldn't feel safe unless I can see the road directly in front of me.

We drive a 2001 Ford Focus ZST. It's a sedan, not the 3-door, and due to its cab forward design (that Chrysler Corp. started with their front wheel drive vehicles back in the mid-to-late '90s) - I'm nearly 5'11", and I can barely see the hood when I drive this car.

I have to go with the front windshield pillar width, mirrors, and nearly 40 years of driving experience to keep this vehicle in-between the "mayo and the mustard", as the younger generations say today (regarding the lines on the road, in the US).

I keep 3 to 4 car lengths behind any car ahead of me; I always signal, and apply brakes early to keep down 'wear and tear' on disc pads and rotors.

As I've written here before, many people that drive cars think they are their own sovereign nation as they turn without signaling; or, pass you by so close that worry about your external rearview mirrors getting knocked off, or worse, is a given.

C'mon, drivers - let's be a bit more sane, shall we? LW

Devs that kang other devs roms

If it's FOSS (Free Open Source Software), which AOSP is, they're legally allowed to kang other dev's FOSS, provided they comply with the terms of the relevant FOSS licenses, like GPL, LGPL, MIT, Apache, etc. The whole spirit of FOSS is to share, learn, study and use each other's code, that's it.

Say hello to Open Kang Android. :D

Except that open licenses don't extend to proprietary additions adjunct to the open source software.

This is precisely why you will never get the source code for Samsung TouchWiz or HTC Sense (both of which are not just launchers or some apps, they're significant forks of Android itself).

And heaven help you if you do get source code somehow and conclude that gives you any rights for use.

It's the same thing with rom and kernel developers.

If I leave my car keys on the front porch, you do not suddenly inherit the right to drive my car or more to the point, share ownership or driving rights to it.

Only software components covered by an open source license to begin with are subject to the freedom provided by the license.

As for the meaning of free in free and open source software -

Richard Stallman, who started it all with the GPL (GNU Public License) explained it very clearly when he said, and I quote -

"It's free as in speech, not free as in beer."

Actual kanging is a legal violation of the original intellectual property owner's rights and has no justification under open source licensing.

Infomercials.
Tolls.
Trolls.
Politicians.
The words "bling" and "swag".
Neonazis.
Matt and Damon Affleck.
The guy who plays batman.
Plastic culture.
Rap.

I actually like the word "bling" or "bling bling", and sometimes use it for describing cheap tacky fake jewellery and knock-off watches, like the ubiquitous, 300 yuan "gold" and "diamond" Rolex Datejust. I think it's very appropriate.

I only use it sarcastically. It sounds like you do too

Unfortunately, there is only a finite amount of sanity in the universe. Sadly, Earth was last in line as it was handed out.
no one, according to many astronomers and scientists that study the beginning of the multiverses (singularities) and quantum physics/mechanics, there are maybe 40 million planets in our galaxy alone that can support life - in various forms.

We may not be top dog amongst the other life forms in our immediate universe (and multiverses), yet we have come so far, and so fast - in technological development, in the last 75 years.

So, while many of us suffer from narcissism, poor decision making, selfishness and avarice, there are many who are good people, with good intentions.

People like EarlyMon, who clarified FOSS for all of us; Kaat72, who shared a lot of personal experiences while traveling, in another thread; mikedt, an ex-pat in China who shares many things, culturally and from personal treks in life; Lordvincent 90 and ocnbrze, who have been helpful to me many times...

These are people that are here in Android Forums. They're great. So, humankind cannot be the last ones when it comes to gaining common sense, and comporting ourselves with decency, and integrity.

That's why we rant about the bad examples, and things that are bad - period.

no one, give humankind a chance. I understand your cynicism, but, love conquers all.

We need more of it. Feel free to 'start a conversation' with me, if you wish. Have a good Sunday. LW

Closure of one of my favourite clubs.

mikedt, that is a damned shame. Now, you've got to find a new watering hole, make new acquaintances and friends... it's just like a kid who has to change schools because his family moved...

Solution: find where all your friends and acquaintances are going to now, and make that your new place.

You know that I'm only
kidding, right? Maybe the new club will have better loos. Your rest room stories always crack me up :). We love ya, man. LW

I probably said the first one earlier in the thread already, because it grinds my gears a LOT.
  • It bugs me when people use "awe" when they really mean "aww".
  • Or "woah" for "whoa". I even saw "woe" used on another forum just now, when they definitely meant "whoa".
I wish spelling still mattered. Mite az wel jus tipe lick thes.

Rant on, PatticakeUS! I'm usually very good with spelling and grammar, but - when I'm not sure, I look it up online.

Whoa, indeed. I've seen it spelled that way for years. In the many novels that I've read.

One of my pet peeves are 'run-on' sentences. Read someone's texts or chats since the Internet left the days of Mosaic... spelling? (Huge guffaw). Use of punctuation, upper and lower case letters. along with remembering 'I before E, except after C... like "ay" in neighbor, and weigh'? (LMAO). Cursive handwriting being mandatory by 4th grade? Nope.

Yet, with laptops in the classroom, it seems like a moot point. In a recent survey, humans have less of an attention span (7 seconds), than goldfish (8 seconds).

Yet, with smartphones, iPads and computers, humans can now multitask better than back in my day. Maybe it's time for me to consider taking Ritalin.

So, in closing, I really can't sit in judgement. Times and technology have changed (sigh).

With the closure of the Rabbit Club, we all had to frequent the Elephant Cafe opposite, last night.

Beer is first rate, but the live music isn't quite so hot.

I wish these people had to wear a specific type of clothing. That way I would know who to avoid.

So what? :D

Nobody cares if English is not the mother tongue. Unlike the rest of the world, we won't laugh in your face for your spelling or mispronunciation, and we have rules here about being tolerant of language mishaps in the forums. (Lucky for me.)

The answer isn't a geography lesson. :D ;)

A tough road to ho is clever - a tough road to hoe is not - farming is done in rows.

I'm under no obligation to assist anyone who says, "Plz plz plz" - by that point, there was enough bandwidth used to take a stab at please, or just leave it off. :p

It's usually pretty clear when English (in any form) is not someone's primary language. It usually manifests in the way they structure their grammar.

It seems to be a uniquely American failing to mis-spell certain words (or more like, not care about proper usage).

In any case, regardless of how it irks me, I generally don't go on a pedantic rant at a person because of poor writing. The rare exception being trolls or the mangling of the language to the extent where I have difficulty understanding the point behind the wall of text.
