Moto G 4GBattery problem

Guest
So I've an app called: BatteryBot who tells you an estimate on how many hours you've left to fully drain the battery. In the past, I could easily reach a day with my battery, as the app said, even when I played some games. But suddenly the battery suddenly drains a lot faster and the app says I've like 16 hours left after a full charge. And when I use some apps and games, the battery will decrease faster. I had to reset my phone to increase the battery life again back to normal and it was alright for like 1/2 months till I had to reset my phone again because of the decreased battery life. This process keeps repeating and I'm sick of it now.

Does anyone know how to fix this without resetting the phone (as it takes a lot of time to set the settings of the phone and all the apps etc.). And does anyone know why my battery has a decreased battery life after a while, but after a reset it's back to normal and will increase again?

I would appreciate some help as this is driving me nuts.

Thanks ;)!

Ps: My phone is not rooted and I'm running Android 4.4.4

The obvious reason would be that some app is using more power. Does the actual battery life decrease, or just battery bot's prediction? If the typical amount of charge you have left at the end of a day is not very different then I'd ignore the prediction.

If it is, then you need to identify what is using the power. If batterybot can't tell you use another monitor (such as GSam) which can. When you know what is using more power you'll have a better idea how to fix it.

BTW Google updates, such as Google Play Services, can affect battery life, and one of their less efficient updates can cause lifetime to decrease apparently randomly (because you don't get told when this updates). As a reset would remove all system app updates this would temporarily fix something like this, but I'd expect it to revert in hours rather than weeks if that was the cause.

The actual battery life and prediction both decrease. I will keep an eye on GSam, but the apps I am using are the same apps when I had the usual good battery life. Anyway as you said, those Google updates could be the case, but those updates don't take months... Anyway, thanks for your reply ;)

Does anyone has an idea how to fix this and why this is happening?

Hmmm, maybe clearing the cache helped to fix the problem. I'm now on 35% and it says it's 8 hours left. I will charge my phone overnight and will tell the result tomorrow.

And if it did fixed the problem, thanks a lot! 2 more questions, what's the difference between wiping the cache in recovery mode and erasing the cache with third party apps (For example: Clean master)

And does it affect my battery when I charge my phone overnight as it will only charge for like 2-4 hours and I sleep like 7-8 hours. When I check the logs, the battery will keep going from 100 to 99 and back to 100 till I unplug the charger.
Is this bad for my battery, will it 'overcharge' or something like that?

Thanks again ;)

First, never, ever use Clean Master or anything like it.

The operating system cache can be cleared in recovery. So far as I know, that's it. I've seen apps like Elixir 2 claim to, but I haven't seen them work since Gingerbread.

There's no harm charging overnight.

Your logs are most likely wrong. Reporting actual percentage is not a high priority once fully charged. Your phone is really swinging between about 96 and 100%.

When you take it off of the charger, it takes several minutes to stabilize and report the correct percentage. It could be 100%. It could be close to 95%.

This leads to the myth known as OMGZ PWNIES MY PHONE DROPPED 5% IN 5 MINUTES, ANDROID DOESN'T WORK, MY PHONE SUCKS, I NEED TO FIX IT.

Just charge it and don't worry, it won't overcharge and it won't be a problem.

I use Clean Master only for cleaning memory, like deleting those spotify files (Seems like Spotify saves every song as a weird file format) and like 9GAG cache files. I turned off RAM clearing etc.

Thanks a lot again, I will charge overnight and post the result. As far as I know, it's fixed, the battery drains a lot slower.

Keep us posted and welcome to the forums! :)

PS - apps have their own caches, the operating system has two called cache and Dalvik - separate from the app caches. Factory data reset is the only way to clear both Android caches - plus in the course of clearing out everything else, it clears app caches as well.

If you keep having to clear the main cache from recovery, maybe try going into app management from the main settings and clear data on any browsers you have. No promises on that trick but I thought I'd cover all of the bases for you. Anything that an app stores to the sd card partition (actual card or internal storage area) may not be cleared on a factory data reset - hence the suggestion.

If you do a cache clear or reset and the battery stays terrible, it's a good bet that you have a corrupted media file. That will drive the system crazy trying to index it.

Clear data on Internet browsers or file browsers?...

Anyway, It's now 8 hours since I've unplugged my charger, the battery is at 55%. My battery life has increased a little bit as far as I know but it's still not as before (I did a reset just 2 weeks ago, after that the battery life was good for like 1,5 weeks). Batterybot says I've 10 hours left. Any other suggestions? Or is this just normal battery life for a 1 year old phone (bought it last year)? I mean, batteries do get worse over time right? And how can I find that corrupted media file if it's true?

Anyway, if the battery can last the whole day till I charge overnight, it's alright. It's just frustrating that I don't know the reason why the battery drains faster than after a reset.

Look for Media or a Media server to always be running and near the top of the running apps list (for example in GSam).

If that's up basically all of the time, you very likely have a bad media file. There are apps that can scan and help find them.

If Media isn't always running, you don't have to worry about it.

Yeah, batteries degrade over time.

But if you had great battery performance after a factory data reset just two weeks ago, and don't now, it's unlikely to be a hardware problem.

No sign of media or media server running all the time, it's on 0,2%.

Hmmm alright... I will just let it be, don't wanna reset again. I'm really confused how this can happen o_O.
Anyway thanks for all your help, I appreciate it a lot ;)

Facebook is notorious for screwing up.

Disable or uninstall for a few days, see if it's the problem.
Also thought of this, but it isn't logical for me... I had FB installed for the past 2 months when the battery life was good. Nothing has changed, FB didn't update as far as I know.

Should I calibrate my battery? Does that fix this problem? And if it's worth trying, how should I do it? I searched on google but every website says different steps...

Battery calibration is a myth except in extreme cases that don't apply here.

In one of the labs I worked in there was a sign -

One test is worth a thousand expert opinions.

I suggest that you lose Facebook for a day or two but it's your decision. :)
FB is deleted, we will see :)
I've noticed that sometimes the battery is getting 'stuck' at a percentage. Is it normal to get 'stuck' on a specific percentage for a while? Sometimes it drops down percentages more quickly and sometimes its getting 'stuck' for a while...
I understand that this depends on the processes, refreshed, sync. etc. But it seems a little bit weird...

If it's stuck at a value while your screen is off then it's just hibernating properly.

If it's doing it during normal use then it's possible that you've got something running so hard that the battery state is getting starved for updates.
Hmmm, not quite sure about it, I just hope it's normal...
Is it true that your battery drains more quickly from 90 to 60 for example, but slower from 30 to 15?... I have the feeling that this is the case atm...

Not unless your Android version has a power management feature to reduce screen brightness, limit apps, etc etc, as power gets lower.

I don't have your model so I can't say in your case.
