Countdown to Windows 10...

Once you've done that it's possible to decrypt the .iso file and install it now, apparently.

And when I say apparently...

One thing to note is that, apparently, if you're using the upgrade offer from 7/8, you have to do an upgrade install first and not a fresh install. Generally people don't trust the upgrades, but if you don't do it that way once, your windows key apparently won't be valid. Once you've done that you can do your fresh install (or do a 'reset' of your install, which is meant to be the same thing but faster).

Three reasons to hold off on Windows 10

Some users may be better off waiting a few weeks before upgrading to Windows 10. Here's why.

I'm not listening!

Assuming you're totally up to date in windows update, the only other tip I've heard is to go to Action Centre > Maintenance > Click 'Start maintenance' under Automatic Maintenance.

Not really sure if that's the key or not.... But the download did start a few minutes after I did that. Could just be a coincidence.

Hello Windows Insider,
19449_spacer.gif
We have begun rolling out the public release of Windows 10 to the world, starting with our valued Windows Insiders. This is a hugely significant milestone for Windows and, thanks to feedback from Insiders like you, we're proud to say that this will be our best Windows release ever! Check out Terry's blog for details on this public release.

Starting on July 29, Microsoft stores in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada will host a series of Windows 10 activities and events – and we invite you to join us. We’re giving away free T-shirts to the first 50 Insiders. All Insiders who drop by will qualify for our Windows Insider Exclusive Microsoft store offer, valid July 29-August 2. For details, including the store nearest you, go to the Windows Insider Hub. (See below if you need to install Insider Hub.)

We invite you to get the final release of Windows 10 on other PCs you may own. Also, let your friends and family know how they too can experience the exciting benefits of Windows 10. Here’s how:
19449_spacer.gif
  • For PCs running Genuine Windows 7/8 – these machines qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update. (You can also do a media-based upgrade though the Microsoft Software Download site.)
  • For PCs not running Genuine Windows 7/8/10 – you can purchase Windows 10 at your local retailer or at online retailers like Microsoft Store.com.

The Windows Insider Program will continue after 7/29, and we'll have more information for you soon about how the program will work going forward. I hope you’ll continue to join us on this exciting journey.

Which leads to:

Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool

The media creation tool can be used to upgrade your current PC to Windows 10 or to create a USB or DVD and install Windows 10 on a different PC.
I'm downloading a Win10 Home ISO right now!

I burned the DVD and repartitioned my hard drive. Gonna try to in stall W10 adjacent my existing W7... if that'll be acceptable.

But the only activation number I have is the one on my W7HP DVD case. It works on W7 installs but not on W10. That's understandable, but what to do. Is installing W10 on a separate partition the problem? Do I need to to install W10 into my existing W7 (like normal people do) to have the W7 activation stand up?

I think so.

Sorted the FM problem. Updated my graphics driver, then ran the Windows compatibility wizard on steam and it's sorted.

I've wanted a fresh install of Windows for a while, so decided to cheat with a "Reset Install" or whatever it's called, using the keep my files and folders option. I did that and when it booted, I got an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_ERROR message. It rebooted a few times, reverted the changes and is now fine.

I'll probably do a fresh install properly next week.
