Hi,

My current PC build is struggling abit with games coming out at the moment because my graphics cards is low on memory,

I have a HIS radeon HD 7850 1GB installed and it has the option to link using crossfire, and I can get a second hand identical graphics card for about £40 second hand and thought this might be a cheap way to help it handle new games like Witcher 3 and Arkham Knight.

Is anyone currently using crossfire that has any advice? Is it worth doing and will it actually give my gaming performance any boost?

I can get Witcher 3 to run at the moment on full low graphics settings and it runs between 30 and 40 fps apart from when I ride into a new area which it drops into the low 20's for about 10 seconds while the area loads, which is why I'm thinking the 1GB graphics memory is the problem and having 2gb might help.

First off,For CrossFireX to work well,You would need 2 mid to high end cards.
What are your system specs.?CPU,MB, and Ram(Speed and amount)

Edit:I am using an XFX AMD Radeon R7 240,But I have mine overclocked to the max.
And this card will play BF3 at 1080p with no issues,But I can't run all the settings on high.

Thanks for the reply,

System specs are - AMD FX 6300 3.5 GHz, 8GB DDR-3 1600 RAM

To be honest I've looked abit further into Crossfire since posting this and I don't think it will really have any benifits for me. My original Idea that it would increase the graphics memory from 1GB to 2GB was wrong as both graphics cards fill their memory with the same data so they will still only function at 1GB, thats my current understanding so far anyways,

Yes, you don't get any benefit to VRAM when using multiple graphics cards - you just get the benefit in processing power.

I'm not necessarily convinced that fps-dips in new areas means your GPU is definitely short of VRAM. It could be that your PC is short of RAM, or that the new areas (and new textures) are taking time to be read from your hard drive, for instance.

There are programs that will let you diagnose these things a bit better. Task manager in windows can show you RAM and hard drive usage. You can use programs such as 'MSI Aferburner' to check out various stats about your graphics card - temperature, VRAM usage, GPU usage, etc. "Real Temp" is a good one for checking out processor temperatures - hardware components usually throttle back their speeds when too hot, so you might want to make sure nothing is too warm.
