Looking for some sort of reminder app

I'll give a bit of background, as I guess I'm looking for something pretty specific, if it exists at all.

I'm a caregiver for a patient that has a lot of trouble remembering things. She has a Galaxy S3. Google Calendar and alarms are helpful, but I need something a bit more. I'd like to, ultimately, set the alarm on her phone remotely, or have some sort of Google Calendar notification other than the standard alarm. I know I can already remotely set her phone's alarm via the Google app, but I can't name the alarm, and she'd likely dismiss it half the time if there's not a title attached to it. Plus, I'd have to remind myself to put in reminders for her daily, as using the Google app method only buys me 24 hours. I'd really like to have some sort of secondary(?) Google calendar notification that I can put on her calendar, have a different notification come up other than the generic notification sound, and some sort of visual reminder. If someone knows of anything even remotely close, I'd really appreciate the help.

That looks a lot Tasker and If. Both are great apps, but miss the mark by no remote functionality. I need to have some sort of remote connection from either my phone to her phone, or from some sort of web interface to her phone. Ideally, the perfect solution for me would be either to have some sort of second notification sound for Google Calendar events, or to be able to set her alarm remotely.

If you can add events to her Google calendar then you can set reminders that way, including a title. You can make alerts more prominent using an app called Calendar Snooze. But I don't know a way of making your reminders sound different from others.
The second sound is absolutely necessary. She is going to want her standard "blip bloop" for certain calendar events, but I need a way to trigger a notification that says "You have an appointment. You need to look at your calendar - now."

I'm a big fan of using Tasker for just about everything (in this case combined with pushbullet plugin). The great thing is you will find many more uses for it. But we always say there's a little learning curve, and it sounds like you're looking for something simpler.

Ideally, the perfect solution for me would be either to have some sort of second notification sound for Google Calendar events,
there is a way to be able to set google calendar up to send SMS for a certain appointment (put a keyword in the appointment, set up an email reminder for the appointment, setup a gmail filter to send SMS when email containing that keyword is received).

Well in Automateit you could trigger a send gMail action from her phone to yours automatically, but it sounds like you need remote control of her phone for some reason.

Have you looked into AirDroid?

It has Remote Connection Mode capability.

Actually, you can set up gmail in Android to have a different alert tone for each label, so you don't need to rely on sms.
The strategy would be:
1 - set up gmail filters to assign certain keywords to a label and remove them from the inbox.
2 - set up sounds for labels in your android app
3 - put keyword in your appointments
4 - set up the appointment to send you email reminder.
Done.

The only caveat is you might be getting double reminders...one from gmail and one from calendar. There may be some ways around that.

One thing you could do is abandon calendar altogether and send the emails in advance, to be delivered at the time of your choosing using gmail delayed send "feature" (it's actually a 3rd part script but it's open source and seems legit to me, also very easy to use):
