The best guitar riff ever?

That was filtered.

I left out Jeff Lynne with the Electric Light Orchestra, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Mad Dog and the Pups, Carole King, Sting, with and without The Police, Spirit, The Kinks, David Gilmour, John Lee Hooker and hadn't even left my favorites yet.
David Gilmour in Comfortably Numb gets me every time!

David Gilmour could stick a riff in your head in 4 notes (Shine on You Crazy Diamond).

Fans of The Simpsons will recognize that "Otto (the bus driver)" already completed this list to perfection. Just one of the many clever, ongoing, disposable jokes that come with great writing and attention to detail; It was always great fun to play "What riff is Otto grooving to today?", and the answer was always hall of fame material.......Iron Butterfly, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top.......Hilarious, and I bet there is a You-tube compilation or three. :D

"Best ever" always difficult but fun.......We're filling a "hall of fame" list, many good suggestions above :)
Not that it much matters, but I have always considered a "riff" to be a (usually) guitar sequence which appears very early in a song, and is repeated several times; Either in a row, or at periodic intervals within the song. A one time only, highly memorable guitar run, often within a solo or during the bridge portion of a song, I have always thought of as a "lick". Live performances of "I Want a New Drug" - (Huey Lewis and The News) often contained within the guitar solo, a lick........a one time use of the classic Hendrix riff from "Purple Haze". Fun! Plenty of room for both in this thread, I suspect. :D

Definitely not my favorite, but certainly HOF worthy riff: Frankenstein - The Edgar Winters Group.

Though it completely exhausts me, tests my patience, I do enjoy some "freak out" music when it is done well. If you can sit through all of this, you will see a multi-instrumental artist, with a peculiar vision for his (kinda' self indulgent) performance.o_O

Very cool; The bass often sadly undervalued. Unfortunately, I have a terminal case of "stupid fingers", could never figure out stringed instruments. But always imagined I would have liked to be bass player, in large part because I'm not a front man/guitar hero type; Would have loved to make that valuable contribution three steps away from center stage. I watch a lot of bass cover videos on Youtube, thanks for that one.
At the risk of hijacking the thread, I'll ask for more, post one as well, and point out that @rootabaga posted a nice one recently, with Flea, slapping on another thread, forget which one. Should be room for both instruments on this thread,( I hope), and back to more guitar riffs soon enough.:D
Suspect you might not really care for this one; It's certainly nothing very complex or sophisticated, and the song quite "bubblegum pop" sound, but a guilty pleasure / ear-worm from many years ago, the original (cover) artist having a much more interesting bio than many may know.

Beyond that, I just enjoy seeing anyone practicing; Still learning the ropes, showing potential, and clearly enjoying the struggle so much. And the frustrated film maker in me likes the crude composition; An amateur video for sure, paralleling her growth as a musician, but displaying some innate sense of production technique occasionally absent in others. Kind of charming in it's playful, unpretentious attitude, and she shows a natural ability to flirt with the camera, whether trying to or not. IMHO.

Edit: Numerous of the "buttons" acting up when I posted this; The "spoiler" button above is tiny and not labelled, but does function, FWIW.

Here's the gorgeous Marta Altesa :p
I love the way that accomplished bass players can float their hand over the fretboard, effortlessly picking out note progressions.
And I would really like to know how that classic Jamiroquai funk bass sound is produced. I describe it as a 'fat squashed' tone, with that little bit of twang. It's a lovely sound to my ears.

I Feel Fine - The Beatles

I don't ain't even not care how bad the footage is, it's original source material.
And it's the whole point.......The audio sucks, they stopped performing live, because they couldn't even hear themselves play; But the stuff was so good in the day, give it up, man.

"I'm so glad, that she's my little girl.........She's so glad, she's tellin' all the world......"

Black Sabbath - Paranoid

"All day long, I think of things, but nothing seems to satisfy....Make a joke, and I will sigh;
And you will laugh, and I will cry...................
Happiness I cannot feel, and love to me is so unreal..........."

Ozzy is a genuinely disturbed individual, and I love him for it.

Some clown joined this thread back in July, :rolleyes:and opened the door to "Guitar licks".......Surely we aren't yet done with the "Guitar riffs", but here's a few favorite licks,(The accidental, snotty tissue rags the guitar player left on the floor for us to enjoy)...... to shamelessly bump the thread.:)

Steve Miller -"Jungle Love" Don't really like Steve Miller, but just after ".....peaches and cream......"

Eagles - "Already Gone" "Heaven knows it wasn't you, who set me free........"(lucky squeal follows)

Two obvious ones above.......someone please direct me to some others to enjoy.:)
