Help How to manage the contact list

Grr Android has me baffled and frustrated. I have no idea what is going on here.
I had 2 entries for some people. I tried to delete one, it did so but one was left and was not able to delete it. I tried to ring it and it said it did not exist!
I tried joining some accounts and adding others, but some worked and some didn't.
Then I deleted 2 email accounts from the phone and have lost almost all of my numbers.
Quite frustrated and fed up as I have no clue how this works. All I want is my flaming numbers n my contact list. Motorola Moto G phone Android version 5.1

You aren't saving contacts in the same place, in the same account. You're putting some in the accounts you deleted, so of course when you deleted those accounts the contacts in them disappared too. I have 5 Google accounts on my phone and keep all the contacts straight, it can be done, but I think you need to simplify things.

Below is a link to a post I wrote for someone in a similar situation to yours. It explains contacts storge a little. You may not have an Exchange account or anything saved to SIM, just ignore what doesn't apply to you.

Then it gives step-by-step instructions on how to get all your contacts in one account, clean up the list an get the new, tidy list on the phone. You need to choose which account will have the 'Master List'. I would use default account on the phone. One thing I'll add not covered in the instructions is, for the accounts deleted from the phone, to add those contacts you'll need to login to those accounts online, export those contacts as a .vcf file and import it into the master account. You'll understand what that means after you read the linked post.

I appreciate the time taken to help, however nothing in your text is as it is on the phone.
"Then just for good measure do: Settings > Apps > All > Google contacts > Clear cache > Clear data. "...no such place or setting or menu on my phone.

Hmmm...those instructions were written using the menus in my Nexus 6 running 5.1.1. I would've thought that a Moto G, since it should bre running a near-stock version of 5.1.1 by now too, would hace pretty much the same menus. Kinda odd and surprising.

Anyway, what I said still applies - even if menus are different, the concept trying to be accomplished is the same. Hop;e you get things worked out.
