Help Purchase a Verizon S6 Edge+ for Straight Talk with ability to switch to GSM carrier/International?

I'm planning to switch over to Straight Talk, and to purchase a Galaxy S6 Edge+ to bring along with me. I've been researching which brand of phone to purchase and what would work best. Originally, I was thinking of purchasing the AT&T phone since it's GSM and, if I travel internationally, I could buy a local sim.

However, a rep at Best Buy informed me that AT&T's phones are not compatible with international GSM sims, so I wouldn't be able to do that anyway.

She recommended that I buy a Verizon phone. She said the Edge's from Verizon come unlocked, and have the capability for both CDMA as well as GSM, and the ability to use the GSM internationally.

So I guess my question is, is it the best option to purchase the Verizon phone, and is this info true? If I purchase the AT&T phone, I would be stuck with GSM provider options if I opted to switch in the future, whereas it seems like, if I go with Verizon, I can get an unlocked phone that will let me take it to any CDMA or GSM carrier at some point later.

The only other piece of info I read was that the Verizon version wouldn't be able to utilize the full network speed on a GSM carrier. So I would get 4G speeds and not LTE. Does anyone know about this? And is the difference between these speeds a big deal, or is it barely noticeable?

If I purchased Verizon for Straight Talk, I'd use Verizon coverage so I'd be ok, I'm just thinking ahead for future use in case I want to switch, since I'm sure I'll have this phone for a while once I purchase it.
