GMAIL problems

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum: mods feel free to shunt it to the right one...

Gmail for me, is an impossible thing to use.
I never know when I can depend on it. I never see anything in my "Inbox", I have sent 100s of test messages from my Yahoo email account, and never see them in Gmail.

My really big problem is that most of anything to do with Google is registered to my Gmail account, and I do not receive "renewal notices", and right now, I can't get a reply to a "forgotten password".

After spending a lot of time searching, I finally discovered 50 messages in Trash.... apparently anything not responded to within XY days gets automatically deleted?

I did a select ALL and moved all of the Trash messages to Inbox, and now my cellphone can see those emails.

But, there is something wrong in my Google Gmail Account Configuration.... almost has to be.
Any Gmail gurus out there able to help me?

Thanks in Advance, as always....
John

You're gmail app, not "inbox" app, right?

Do you by any chance have multiple email accounts linked to your gmail app? (Click on hamburger/menu icon upper left corner..if multiple accounts you will see multiple circles..one per account).

Have you set up filters (rules) or priority inbox? (These settings are controlled by pc..not accessible by mobile app).

Nothing in your Inbox should ever be deleted or moved unless you do it or, as electricpete suggested, you have filtered your email. We have accounts with email going back years.

Just to be clear, a few questions...

1. I assume email that falls to show up in the Inbox on the phone also fails to show up in the Inbox online, correct?

2. If #1 is wrong, and everything appears as it should online, then...
2a. What email app are you using?
2b. What is your phone?
2c. Have you tried another email app and if yes, what?

3. Have you tried test messages sent from a different account than Yahoo?

Yahoo email service is, well... Less than 100% reliable, let's just leave it there. Gmail isn't perfect either, but I'd suspect Yahoo of having a problem long before Gmail.

Yes, I have files in Yahoo that go back 10 years, especially legal files from my Lawyer. I sucked out your other questions and will go thru them step by step below:

Just to be clear, a few questions...

1. I assume email that falls to show up in the Inbox on the phone also fails to show up in the Inbox online, correct?

All of the incoming emails were being "filtered" direct to the Trash folder. Why I don't know, I had never, ever, used Gmail for anything. It was raw territory, just like ole Google set it up for me years ago when I first bought a smartphone. Back then, I noticed that anything sent to Gmail just simply disappeared to never arrive.

2. If #1 is wrong, and everything appears as it should online, then...
.... the online version was the same as the App version on the phone

2a. What email app are you using?
..... I changed that just recently due to a suggestion of yours I think, it is now Aqua Mail and loving it.

2b. What is your phone?
..... A Galaxy S5 at first up until yesterday when I plugged my SIM into my Note 4.
the phones are configured identically, precisely the same as I used Nova Prime to rebuild the HomePages and folders.
Also used Super Backup to restore all of the Contacts and SMS folders/messages

2c. Have you tried another email app and if yes, what?
..... it used to be Blue Mail / Type but I changed it over to Aqua Mail, both react the same

3. Have you tried test messages sent from a different account than Yahoo?
.... oh indeed yes, many times, that is the way that I was proving that nothing ever showed up in the Gmail Inbox.
I have accounts with Lycos and others all reserved in my Primary Preferred name... all of them got lost.

Yahoo email service is, well... Less than 100% reliable, let's just leave it there. Gmail isn't perfect either, but I'd suspect Yahoo of having a problem long before Gmail.
..... no arguments with either, but I have learned the nuances of Yahoo's email service. And they are still my Primary email service simply because they allow me to have unlimited "throw away" email addresses. When I sign up for some vendor's news blurb, or a new app wants my email address, to keep control of Spammers, I just create a unique address for each and every vendor. Looks like this: JackSplattSecure-VendorName@yahoo.com

Now, when spam starts to show up addressed to "JackSplattSecure-VendorName@yahoo.com" I know right away that VendorName has sold my email address, or someone has forwarded it to someone and a Robot found it.
... when that happens, I just delete the offending email address and poof! all the spam disappears with it.
... also use that to unsubscribe from newsletters that didn't pan out the way I wanted them to, easier to just delete the email address than to go through their laborious steps for me to tell them why I don't like them anymore.
...

Now, after I have explained the above..... I woke up in the middle of the night and decided that Gmail was not going to whip this ole rancher's ass anymore... I signed into the Website version on my Desktop which has a 24 inch monitor on it.
That way I can see the whole page at a glance.

It took me a long time to figure out all of the different conflicting configurations in Gmail. Nothing is where I thought it ought to be, and I don't remember now what it was that flipped the switch....

..... 1st, I went to Trash and moved all of those emails to the Inbox. I was very pleased that at least 30 days worth were still available as I had signed up recently for a service that was sending me newsletters that never showed up... and there they were.

..... then I went to Settings, and very slowly went thru each Heading and started flipping different items to OFF/ON whichever was opposite to the way they were when I found them first. Each time I would do a "SAVE" and then go look at my Gmail Inbox, send an Email from Yahoo/Lycos to Gmail and see if it hit the Inbox, or went to Trash.... a very laborious and Time Consuming exercise.

..... the bottom line though is that somewhere, amongst all of those Settings/Options, I found something that stopped the "filtering" of all messages to the Trash Folder.... Gmail is now working as it should.

.... then I went to my Note 4 and opened up Aqua Mail and started using it to send emails from the Yahoo account to the Gmail account... that worked, the Gmail Inbox on Aqual Mail suddenly reported a (1) message waiting to be read.
so I sent a few more for grins, and yes, the Gmail account then faithfully showed up with increasing (msg received) counter values...

so, all is good in Email Land now...

I went back to Gmail on the Website via the Desktop PC and started working with Filters until I figured that one out, and successfully set up a filter that will Forward Everything that arrives in Gmail to my Yahoo account.

Thank the lord for that working in Gmail... Now I don't have to be so picky about if some app automatically sends me a "lost password" back to the Gmail address.... it was this very situation that made all of this So Terribly Important yesterday. I have CoPilot GPS prime registered to me... and when I tried to Activate it on my new Note 4 (was on the Galaxy S5) I had forgotten to record the registration details "back when".... so I told it "Forgot Password" and it says "email sent"

Problem was, I never got the email.... and that was when I wrote the 1st post in this thread....

Bottom Line, is this thread is now resolved, and I thank everyone for their help. I looked at each suggestion last night and wrung it out on the Desktop PC and the Gmail website until it works now.

Oh, a comment on Aqua Mail... Love that Smart Folder, now it don't matter where an email is addressed to me, it all shows up in the same place...

Thank you all.
John

@electricpete is on to something there.

I'll be you've got a similar situation to mine. I've got 5 security web cameras around my property and during the hours we aren't at home, i have it set to automatically snap a picture and send it to my gmail address if any motion is detected. On windy days or if the kids are playing outside next door, I get a lot of pictures. Gmail saw a lot of the same or similar email coming from the same address and decided all on its own that i was being spammed. It took me a while to realize I stopped getting these images and when I went to my gmail account on a PC I saw them in the spam folder. If they sit in the spam folder for 30 days, they get moved to trash and then deleted after another 30.

My guess is the same thing has happened to you. You have to not only tell gmail that they are not spam, you to set up a rule so that they don't get moved in the future. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/9008?hl=en

I am now wondering if that wasn't something that happened to my Gmail account many years ago, and I was so frustrated with the situation, that I just quit using Gmail....

as my post just prior to this indicates, I finally got it fixed with much pain, but it is working.
Now that Gmail is forwarding everything to Yahoo, I will be able to track if something goes awry.

I too, am thinking of setting up video cameras outside to send me a picture when something moves... we live in a Rural Area and the mailmail/UPS/FedEx drivers all have to come down my very long driveway to leave packages... they often store them in the weirdest places.... and I will be looking for something and never find it.

Having a Video Camera send me a picture when something moves in the driveway would be a big plus in my books.
thanks for your suggestion, I am going to go look into that right now.

Well...I'm kinda lost on all this as to exactly what setting was wrong in Gmail. But I'm glad you got it fixed.

BTW, have you noticed AquaMail has several options for the Smart Folder, including choosing which folders are shown in the Smart Folder? It's not called a Smart Folder for nothin'! AquaMail is also getting an optional, configurable Conversation view any day now.

Gmail: I am want to think it had something to do with Filters.... for some reason, I found two filters activated. I didn't know what they were for, so I just deleted them.

I have not played with Smart Folder yet.... other than noticing that it pulls in all of the email accounts into one place.
I kind of like it.

conversation view is something that this ole boy just cannot get used to.
I turned it off on my desktop browser, I prefer to see one email, digest that and delete it.

The Smart Folder is trick. A bunch if options and the ability to include/exclude most folders makes it far more than a simple combined Inbox.

AquaMail v1.6.0 started a phased rollout today. You might be able to upgrade now. It has the optional conversation view. I never liked conversation view for email either, but this is different. It's, configurable, with a batch option's and let me set it up in a way I'm really liking.

I just checked to see which version I have and it is 1.5.9.14
then I noticed that I was using the free version, but I have been enjoying the features of it so much, that I decided to fork over for the Pro version.
Thought that might upgrade to v1.6.0 but it didn't... will keep checking back on it.
I have Auto-Updates turned off.... that breaks more apps than it fixes...

The Pro version opened up a lot more features for me to play with.
And, that Smart Folder indeed can be very smart.

I turned ON a lot of the features just for 'gee whiz' effects to see how it is going to work.
Love that 'Fast Scroll', OMG is that ever usefull.... I keep a lot of emails in my inbox as I use my Inbox as a sort of "To Do List", that way every time I check emails, I get a little jab that "Clean the fridge out bud, mom is getting mad at you"

Thanks for your help on the Gmail thing, it nudged me into the right direction.
Aqua Mail is a terrific app. :)

There's so many options and little tweaks in AquaMail that it took a long time for me to really get a handle on it and make it all work best for me. Quite a learning curve to take full advantage of all it can do.

The developer is.very active, constantly adding new stuff. I've been running his development builds and there's new one almost every day. He's a heckuva programmer.

Have fun with it!

Been meaning to ask about your avatar.
Is that just a representative picture of a crashed vehicle, or was it one you owned?

My avatar is one that I found a huge big picture of taken not far from where I live. I just happened to enjoy the scene. It kind of expresses where I live, and how much I enjoy my little friends and being able to look out over my backyard and see horses, or cattle, or sheep depending on where I ride my motorcycle.

My sister has a small ranch in Utah and keeps riding horses, llamas for 'guard animals', goats, and a few head of cattle.... just enough to keep the freezer stocked. :)

look up llamas and their habit of taking ownership of any herd of animals... they kill vicious critters regardless of make or model.

Yeah, I only know what the accident investigators told me.
I remember coming up from behind in the HOV lane, and was at a 45 degree following position to the left of that truck.
I remember thinking should I drop a gear and hammer down the throttle and get around him, or should I drop back and open up my following distance?

My next thoughts were "where am I" in a hospital bed a week later almost.

Witnesses say he dove to the left to avoid rear ending some "stop and go traffic" on a major 5 lane loop thru Phoenix, AZ...
Investigators found the brakes on the truck to be faulty, and would cause it to do a major "left turn" if he tried to lock them up.

I still ride, but I have a huge healthy respect for staying away from trucks. I didn't like them then, and while I'm not scared of them now anymore than then, I just leave a lot more space between me and traffic, any kind of traffic.
