I just got my HTC Desire 626s. I need the instructions to unlock the bootloader. And were to down load the CWM for this phone. I think I can handle it after that. I still have all my notes that I made from rooting the ZTE Warp 4g. I don't think the basic technic changes from phone to phone.

Steve

In addition to what I posted above. I don't know what model of HTC I have. The receipt from the phone store says HTC Desire 626s. The model number in the phone is OPM92. I don't know whitch is right. In all the web pages that I looked at. All talk about a "fast boot" line in the bootloader menu. And in normal phone mode under settings > power there is supposed to be a check box called "fast boot". I don't have that ether. I tried following the steps at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ I got to step 5 and I am stuck. In step 5 it says to type the following bellow in the CMD prompt.

Step 5

Open a command Prompt: Windows: Start->"cmd" Mac: Applications->Utilities->Terminal.app Linux: Terminal

Type in Command Prompt: fastboot oem get_identifier_token.

I type "Windows: Start->"cmd" Mac: Applications->Utilities->Terminal.app Linux: Terminal". And windows comes back with "windows is not recognized as an internal or external command". I am stuck. I could use some help please.

Of course you also need to install "fastboot" on your computer first. See this thread for more information.

Don't confuse your"fastboot" and "fast boot". It's only the one in the bootloader that is relevant - the other "fast boot" thing is nothing to do with this (it's just a way of restarting the shell without a full shut down/boot up). You need your phone to be in fastboot mode and connected via USB, then you can use the fastboot command you installed on your computer.

You do have a "fastboot" item in your bootloader menu, because all HTCs do. If your bootloader says "hboot" a couple of lines above the menu then "fastboot" will be in the menu of options. If it says "fastboot" above the menu and has "bootloader" as one of the options you are already in fastboot mode. If neither of those is true then you are not in the bootloader at all; in that case please send us a picture or tell us what you are doing to get into the bootloader.

The OPM92 is the same thing as the Desire 626, so don't worry about that.

You say I have a fastboot in my bootloader menu. Look at the screen capture pictures bellow. I don't see any line marked "fastboot". And there is no fastboot check box in system > power. So what next?

Thanks Electricpete and Hadron for the help. The bootloader is now unlocked. I had to fight with windows a bit because it was saying in the cmd prompt that is couldn't see certain directorys. I moved everything into 1 dir. Windows wasn't seeing the dir android with the files adb_usb.ini, adbkey and adb.pub. So I copyed them to the dir were fastboot.exe is. And it worked.

But now I have a new problem. The setup was asking to hit a button to select which language I wanted. English was the top bar and French is the next one down. Some how French was selected. Now the phone is stuck in a voice instruction loop. I can't kill the loop because I don't speak French and I can't power down the phone. The long hold on the power button isn't working. Normally at this point I would open the phone up and pull the battery. I can't see any way to open it up and pull the battery.

I finely got the long hold power button figured out. It is volume up + long hold power button. And I got the phone back to speaking and showing English. But I still can't get past the picture that I screen captured picture bellow with the camera in my room mates phone. The phone is stuck there. The only way to power down the phone is with the long hold power + volume up. I can get into the bootloader and it says on top "HTC download mode" and the next line down ***unlocked***. I am assuming that the rest of the rooting has to be done before the phone is ready to be used. Kind of like the old IDE hard drives. When they came brand spanking new in the box. They had to be low level formatted, then the partition then finely the high format. And the low level format only had to be done 1 time in a hard drive's life time.

Hmm, that's certainly a different bootloader than any I've seen before. I'd heard rumours that there were devices coming that used something less HTC-like than the usual hboot, but had never encountered one. But OK, it sounds like it's been unlocked.

However, unlocking by itself shouldn't affect the phone's function: it just allows fastboot to overwrite or erase partitions that it wouldn't be able to do on a locked phone. Unlocking does perform a factory reset, but that wouldn't stop the phone booting since it doesn't affect the system software. The rooting process is unlock bootloader, install custom recovery (which needs the bootloader unlocking), use recovery to install the files that give you root access. Only the last state modifies the Android system, and that only by adding a few things to it. So you really should still be able to boot normally after unlocking.

So first thing to check: how exactly did you unlock it, i.e. what commands did you type? And did you do anything other that issue the unlock command?

I did every step at http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ as it was written. The only part that I am not sure of is in the following note "NOTE: If you do not find your ROM version in the table below, and your ROM version is newer, then your device does not require the RUU. Please bypass these steps and continue to the next page." I didn't know were to find the ROM version in the phone. I figured since this is a brand spanking new phone that I could skip the RUU step. Other then that after Electricpete told me the right cmd line to type in and I solved the dir problem. Everything went like clock work. The picture that I forgot to post before as to the way the phone looks now is bellow. I was up all night fighting with this, thats why I forgot to upload the picture. I need to get the phone rooted because the app called "easy tether pro.apk" is my backup ISP (the app needs the phone to be rooted). I connect my laptop via the USB cable to my cell phone and the easy tether app lets my laptop get onto the internet via the cell phone. It is my backup ISP in case ether Frontier Communications decides to get stupid and cut services again if we get just a little behind on the bill or some drunk mows down the main junction box again were the phone cable comes in from the street to the apt complex.

Right, just come back now (only for a minute, taking a break from other tasks). That recent picture looks like the "start up" dialogue after a factory reset, but I guess you've figured that out. You shouldn't need to worry about the RUU bit: that's only for really old phones, i.e. predating the HTC bootloader unlocking programme. If the phone is unlocked that bit wasn't needed.

Don't understand about the "fast double tap" problem (my instinct is to look at gesture and accessibility settings, but it seems an unlikely thing). Is this voice command thing a "Google Now" type feature, or some accessibility thing? I'm asking because I uninstall that type of stuff myself, so am not very familiar with it.

For rooting you won't find instructions on HTC's site. You'll need to install a custom recovery, then use that to flash a superuser package. There's an XDA thread that claims to have detailed instructions for this model, though the fact that it recommends TWRP then talks about having installed "cyanogenmod recovery" is a touch odd (I think this is just an editing issue though - personally I'd also say use TWRP). It does include links to all of the files. I'd suggest reading a bit of the thread, at least first few posts and the most recent, in case there are reports of problems, but to me this looks like what you need.

I finely got the phone working again 100% in the factory default settings. I had to turn off the "talk back" setting "in the Settings > Accessibility". It is a pain in the butt. I had to dbl tap each button just right to make it work. Normal menu scroll wasn't working right and that bloody talk back turned the screen off after 25 seconds. I knew there was a setting to turn off that talk back and the dbl tapping of the key bit. I just had to find it on the internet. I am going to take a break from working on the phone for a while and root the phone later.

Rooting I know how to do. I rooted my old ZTE Warp 4G phone with help from this forum and I still have all my notes that I wrote down from that job. The rooting files and what's in the files change from phone to phone. But the basic routine doesn't change as far as I know.

I have a new problem. I may have flashed the wrong img file. And I can't find were I got it from. I have been looking at so many web pages tonight looking for the right instructions.
I followed the following instructions bellow. And all the phone does now is what is in the picture bellow. the screen is black > I press and hold the power + volume up and the screen bellow pops up for a second and the screen goes black again.
-------
Once you have successfully unlocked your bootloader, you will need to flash a custom recovery (TWRP recommended). This recovery image will replace the stock recovery on your phone and allow to flash the SuperSU binaries in the next step.
- Connect your phone to the PC via USB cable and let the PC install the necessary drivers for the phone.
- Power off phone
- Reboot the phone into "Download" mode:
- While holding the Volume Down button, press the device Power button. Continue to hold the Volume Down button until the phone boots into "Download" mode. To confirm that the bootloader is unlocked and that you are in "Download" mode, you should see the following two lines at the top of the screen:
- "hTC download mode"
- "*** Unlocked ***"
- Once you have confirmed that you are in download mode and the bootloader is unlocked, it's time to flash the custom recovery:
- Open a Command Prompt (aka DOS prompt) window and change to the directory where you put the fastboot.exe file. If using the recommended directory, you would type this command in the Command Prompt window to change to that directory:
- Type "cd \HTC626s" and press [ENTER]
- Make sure that the recovery file is in the same directory (type "DIR" and press [ENTER] to see the files in the current directory). If it is not in the current directory, put it there before continuing (via Windows Explorer). Also, I'd recommend renaming the recovery image to "recovery.img" - it makes typing the commands a little easier and reduces the likleyhood of a typo. So before continuing, you should have both "fastboot.exe" and "recovery.img" in the current directory.
- In the command prompt window, type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and press [ENTER] - this will flash the custom recovery to your device.
---------
The flashing went fine. Then as instructed I went to reboot to download mode, then to boot recovery mode to start moving to the dir were the SuperSU.zip file is. Thats when the screen just went black. And thats the way the phone sits now. Did I just brick my phone? :-(

By the way the name of the img file was "stock (something) recovery.img". What the 2nd word is were the word "something" is I have no clue as to what that word is.

A new development. Just before shutting down the laptop to rack out. I decided to give the phone one more go at long hold power + volume up. And LO AND BEHOLD the phone shut down and restarted 100% NORMAL. Everything works. I don't know what took place but the phone sat undisturbed for about an hour and a half. The app "root checker" still reports that the phone isn't rooted yet. But at lease the phone isn't bricked. :-D
