Help Go Phone: Low Plan w/Smartphone

Hi!

I'm currently using an AT&T prepaid Go Phone with a Alcatel 871A and I have the $0.25 a minute / $0.20 a text plan. It got washed, so I'm looking into a smartphone. That said, I want to keep my current plan, because I don't even use that to it's capability and going from $14 a month to $40 a month for a touchscreen is absurd.

I have zero interest in data and will only use it on wifi. Basically I want it to check Facebook on break.

Main Question:
Can I just put my SIM card into one of the cheap-o Go Phone smartphones and use it as is? Or will it sense a smartphone and "upgrade" me?

If true, would this not happen if I used an unlocked phone not from AT&T?

Finally, any suggestions for a new smartphone that can use an AT&T SIM card in that is $60 or under?
Again, I want it for the occasional text and to check Facebook over wifi, not gaming.

Thanks for any help.

You just missed out on a $19 ZTE, there is still a Lumia 640 for Cricket @ Best Buy n Target.
You can just pop in AT&T sim in any of their mvno's phones.
And I'm guessing re smartphone that it will be fine and just not give you data. BUT I thought your plan charged cents per KB...

That is the question I came to ask - in order to keep bill at zero, should I turn off data (besides not giving out #)?

If I see another android deal I'll let you know.

You could look @ Freedompop, Consumer Cellular n Ringplus for any cheap / almost free deals ...then just pop in sim, no need to unlock.

Good luck.
