Help FoxFi: "Your carrier has blocked WiFi mode in the latest phone update"

ok let me get this straight foxfi will work on att as long as you have android 4.2 or earlier right? that's how I've understood it so if I'm correct wouldn't a easy/cheap fix would be best to get a cheap go phone off Walmart website for 30 bucks and use a nano sim card adapter for less than 10 bucks and switch out phones as needed for WiFi am I completely wrong or dumb for not thinking about this since they blocked it years ago

I too have unlimted Verion data protected by years of paying full price for my phones.

My FoxFi recently quit working as well. So I decided to try subscribing to Verizons $30 a month hotspot fee. Wow. Within 15 mintues Foxfi worked perfectly. When I cancelled the subscription Foxfi quit workint within 15 minutes of the cancellation.

In my opinion Foxfi has been blocked somehow unless the $30 a month is paid.

I'm confused, are you guys saying you can't hotspot anymore??

I have a Droid Maxx XT1080, i am NOT on unlimited data, nor am i on a tethering plan or whatever that is, i don't even see that option on Verizon when i look at my account.

But i can use the HotSpot app that came with the phone and connect my laptop and surf through it no problems whatsover.

Software version 4.4.4 and i just got the OTA this week as well, still works, just tried it.

I have a Galaxy S5 on Verizon with unlimited data and foxfi is working fine. There is a new update that started prompting to be installed a few weeks ago, but I'm not installing it until I'm sure it won't kill foxfi. When did yours stop working Parker?

I have the unlimited data plan on both my phone with FoxFi and 3G Mifi. I tried to upgrade the 3G Mifi to a 4G Jetpack and Verizon wouldn't let me without changing the plan. I got curious though and placed my cell phone SIM card into the 4G Jetpack I bought off Amazon and was able to connect to the Jetpack as if it were my phone. I only left the SIM in the Jetpack for about 10 minutes because it of course made my phone useless. Now I am wondering if I get a new SIM for my phone claiming I lost my original, can I put my original "lost" SIM in the Jetpack and have my phone work on the new SIM with the Jetpack working on the old SIM..... ? I must try this!

No, as soon as you activate a new sim for your phone, the old one will no longer work on the line. Only one sim per line is allowed.

You can't just use your phone as the Hotspot with FoxFi?
After Android version update 4.4.4, FoxFi as Wifi is no longer able to function. I have Android version 4.4.2 and have no issue using FoxFi in Wifi mode, but keeping an older phone just to have the unlimited plan work as Wifi sucks. From what I read here, you can use the unlimited internet in a tethering or Bluetooth mode and only for a single device if I'm reading the responses correctly.
Basically go to any phones settings, look at the "About Phone" utility and it will give you what Android version the phone is running. Anything higher than 4.4.2 and you can kiss FoxFi in Wifi mode goodbye.

I have a Galaxy S6 on Verizon with unlimited data and I use FoxFi every day. I use it as a wifi hotspot as well as for USB tethering. I attached a few pictures as proof. The software version on my phone is 6.0.1. The way I got around using an old phone was by upgrading the phone on my wife's line, then moving her back to her current phone and putting the new phone on my line. This kept me from losing my unlimited data plan. Not sure why yours doesn't work, but I've used mine this way since 2013. I started on Galaxy S4, then to S5, and now on S6. My FoxFi works in Wifi mode on my Kyocera Brigadier. It is running Android 4.4.2 though. The only time I had issue with FoxFi not working is when I tried to get the Droid Turbo when it first came out. As I stated though, my daughter's Galaxy S5 with Android 5.0 also works with FoxFi on Wifi. Did FoxFi actually work out an update to go around the previous block now?

The Premium version of FoxFi has always worked for me on Verizon and they are just about the tightest carrier there is...
all you need do is bypass the request to see if you have permission to run a Hotspot....

the carrier has NO WAY to determine that you are. Data is Data, regardless of whether the phone is using it directly or repeating it thru a WiFi hotspot.

After years of getting nowhere with foxfi hotspot on a Droid Maxx other than tethering and creating a hotspot via computer, and literally spading my Maxx with a shovel, I activated a back up phone, a droid razr with micro hdmi. Voila! Foxfi hotspot is working great again! Verizon no longer updates those models to the latest build, thereby keeping my current build on 4.1.2. For those lucky enough to remain unlimited data on Verizon, the $50 spent for a new/older model droid was well worth the cost, compared to spending the $700 for a Samsung to retrieve the Foxfi wifi mode. Through Foxfi hotspot, my service bars has increased as well, topping out around 33,000 kps. Now sharing my hotspot for all those that may be in need up to 8 devices.
For those that are unable to use the wifi mode in Foxfi, don't forget to create a hotspot via computer while tethering and remember to create a one click shortcut. http://fasttechbuzz.com/creating-wifi-hotspot-network-in-windows-88-1-using-command-prompt/

I found a workaround on my Moto G4 Plus 4th Gen UNLOCKED (Model XT1644) on Verizon for wifi tethering via foxFi. I switched the SIM card from S3 to G4 and went to settings>tethering & mobile hotspots. I turned on Portable WiFi Hotspot (received no prompts). I set up my SSD and password. Then I activated FoxFi. No problems. I will know if I got charged later for this but since I didn't receive prompts to call Verizon and establish a tethering account I'm fairly confident.

Hello,
I joined just to ask you this: Can you elaborate what you mean? Do you mean that I can upgrade my phone and still be able to keep my VZW Unlimited data? I have upgrade just sitting there because I was told if I upgraded I would lose unlimited data. Did you transfer your upgrade to your wife's line through verizon website, then transfer the phone back to your unlimited line? If this works, i'd upgrade in a heartbeat. Thank you in advance!

I upgraded my phone from a Droid 3 to Droid Turbo and kept unlimited data. However, Droid Turbo would not let FoxFi operate. I quickly went back and traded the Turbo for a Kyocera Brigadier. The link I posted last lists phones that let FoxFi work on them and in what capacity. I do believe Verizon will still allow you to upgrade and keep your plan.
