Suddenly Mate 8 consumes huges amounts of data

Since November 1st my Mate 8 started to consume enormous amounts of data. So much that I cannot use mobile Internet anymore as my monthly allowance evaporates in a few days.
When I look at what the app MyDataManager has to say about that it appears that the function PredefinedEapSim is the culprit.
Before November 1st it used on average 0.5 to 0.6 MB a day, now around 300MB a day.
I have contacted Huawei, but you can guess their answer... It's up to my service provider to remedy this.
I will contact my service provider very soon, but what is this? Has anyone had the same experience? This is annoying as hell.
Any advice and/or information on this would be highly appreciated. I tried to Google this but there is very little information available and what I can find is far too technical for my little gray cells.
Thanks

Possibly it's an OTA firmware update it's having problems with and can't complete.

Is your Huawei rooted or otherwise modified? Because someone else recently had a rooted phone and reporting excessive data usage. Apparently it was repeatedly downloading the same pushed OTA update file, but it couldn't complete because the phone was rooted. Can't recall what make or model it was. But a fix for that would have been, either nix the OTA update processes, or more preferable restore it back to unroooted original.

PredefinedEapSim whatever that is, sounds like a system process.

I would recommend you to stop using data usage on backend apps.

Go into Settings > Data Usage and select the app you want to restrict data for. In the stats, you will see two types of data: foreground and background. If you find background data is too high and you don’t need the app to stay active, simply toggle the switch that is labeled as “Restrict app background data”.
