Ever since my first computer I have had and used Microsoft based email (pop3) accounts. For years now those accounts have evolved into configurations with different telcoms, my present one being Windstream.net and I have five email addresses registered with them. On my computer(s) when I send an email to any contact the SENDER field (me) address is whatever I have preset default or what I select instead of default. So for example when I send an email message from my computer that message shows a return "Windstream" email address (.............@windstream.net).

Just recently replaced the Virgin Mobile cell phone that went bad with an Android phone (alcatel 5027B). This level of phone technology is new to me so I'm still learning the ropes. When I set up this Android phone it seems it automatically set up a Google account from apps (I also have a G mail account with Google that I have been accessing on my putor). I have had no difficulty using the phone for calling but EMAILING is something else.

What I would like if possible is to email my contacts (whose addresses, data, etc, has all been copied to the Virgin mobile phone) FROM MY .........@WINDSTREAM address, NOT FROM MY GMAIL ADDRESS .........@gmail .com. At this time whenever I attempt to email any of my contacts my return address shows ........@gmail.com.

I have tried to add another (windstream) address using the Android's settings but whenever the phone attempts to validate the windstream server I get the message "couldn't open connection to server". Though I'm assuming that's the way I can add the required windstream server access on the phone it apparently cannot be done for some reason, or the phone is not capable to use my windstream account address and is only capable of using Gmail account data. My internet connection is good and I know my windstream password is correct to access the windstream server so the problem is not poor connection or wrong password.

HELP. Tell me I'm right, wrong, or how to do what I want this device, if it's even possible.

You should be able to look in your apps drawer where you see all your normal apps, and find something like "email" - not "gmail", and go into that to create the connection to your account.

I'm confident it can be done one way or another :)
That sounds logical and I agree (actually what a windstream account rep suggested). But I have already looked in apps and there's nothing at all about email except Gmail. Not that I've ever created a Gmail app that I know of, as far as I know only giving Gmail access to my windsteram account data(?). I'm thinking maybe I inadvertently prevented any other email app access? Maybe I should re figure the phone completely from start?

Not any more. With Android 6 (I think) and later the gmail app IS the default email client. I like it as i can have a unified inbox on my phone. Although, I do prefer Aquamail on my tablet.

@provobis , most likely you will need to configure some advanced server settings to get your phone to talk to your windstream server.

From Windstream's site:
  • E-mail Address Format: USERNAME@windstream.net
  • Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.windstream.net
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.windstream.net
  • Account name: your Windstream.net email address
  • Incoming and Outgoing mail server requires authentication
Unfortunately they say nothing about port settings or encryption. And, on another "help" page I see they recommend using IMAP not POP3 on Android.

Download a new email app from the play store. I use Aqua mail for my Microsoft account, never an issue. Fully customizable too.

Thanks, I tried that and it seems to work pretty much like on my puter, but hope it doesn't complicate things on the android, and in order to email anyone I first have to access Aqua mail instead of the phone automatically accessing windstream. Have to see if there's till a way to get that done. Thanks again

Just tried Aqua mail, will have to see if there's a way to make it automatic whenever I want to use windstream, but if not looks like I'll have to investigate your references here. Thanks

Back to you lunatic59, and you're no lunatic if I may say so. Anyway I deleted my Gmail account leaving Aqua mail. Selecting "contacts" now brings up a compose field with all file, attachment, etc sharing I can use with my ......@windstream.net return address showing, so evidently (so far) it's automatic using windstream. Although I can now also go directly to Aquamail and do the same thing. Thanks again.

It is, I use it. But don't ask Google for an IMAP account in Aquamail. They want permission to scan everything.
Unless you're hosting your own email on your own server (not a trivial project BTW), all the free email services scan every message running through their servers, be it for data collection and/or for online exploits. Google gets the most media attention for this but be it Microsoft or Yahoo or any of the ISP's they all scan and log email. Google is one of the more transparent about this, making it very public they're collecting your data while most other corporations are just the opposite being very opaque on their data collection policies. Microsoft is a typical example, deceptively hiding their actions in a pages long legalese ToS that most of us just click through without reading. So keep pointing the finger at Google, for being up front on this matter, while the odds are much more likely whatever email service you're using is doing the same thing.

Hi!

I am not sure if I have the same issue, either way I was unable to solve my issue with the above hints...

I want to use alex@gmail.com for all incoming emails (as several accounts are connected to this account) but send all emails from Phil@mydomain.com.
i.e. there are different email-adresses for POP than for SMTP.

Does this work when setting up only ONE Account on my android?
I set up the POP account and wanted to change the SMTP Server; but this did not work and I get the same error as OP: "couldn't open connection to server".

Thanks in advance!

It should be possible to do it but only by logging in to your Gmail account on a PC/Laptop to set it up. The following link gives full details :-

Hi Tommo,

thanks for the fast reply - I didnt think of trying to change something in the web-client at all.

However, this specific fix (as well as a few variations which I tried) didnt work. It does work for the gmail web-app, but does not help with always sending out messages from my Phil@mydomain.com email account when using my Blackberry Keyone.

I guess it is either not possible at all or I am just overseeing a super-obvious setting :)
