Default Open to public, Defy XT 536 shipping in mid-December

I've been waiting a full year now, but I've finally been able to buy the Motorola Defy XT 536 dual band. Figures the same time I can buy it that republic goes open to the public. But oh well. And they fixed the SMS issues over WiFi. So when I get mine in a couple weeks, I should be good to go.

The downside to the whole thing is no MMS. But we'll see what we can do for workarounds I suppose.

No MMS? You can do it over WiFi with free android apps. Why do they lack it?

Well, it's only now coming out of beta, and they only now got SMS working over WiFi. With dozens of other ways to send pics I don't think they put a high priority on the issue.

Still won't join. I had a Wave C reservation, but refused to use this phone they are offering. It has one shortfall... only 380KB of free space in memory. That is WAAAY too little. If you install more than a couple of apps, even with using all the "move to SD" options, it'll throw up "low on space" warnings all day long.

The Defy has a bit more space. That must have been the Optimus, which I don't believe they're even offering anymore.

Unfortunately, I am talking about the new Defy XT. Go read the specs... it says 512MB space* (and the * note reads along the lines of "Before Republic Wireless software is installed")

Everyone is reporting around 350MB-380MB of free space with a fresh new phone.

Unfortunate. But I have other devices for more intensive apps and such. I really don't need my phone to be a mini-pc. While it would be nice to have the latest and greatest, I'm counting pennies since moving, and I'm really not up to paying $100+ at Verizon.

My first phone was the Ascend, which had less memory than that. With the help of the folks at the forums here, I had over a hundred apps installed on it with very little lag. Eventually, that is. Took some a2sd work.

I'm with you on saving the cash. I really wanted to use Republic Wireless, but ended up going with Verizon's coverage via Straight Talk's Samsung Galaxy Proclaim. $45/mo for unlimited talk, text, and data while keeping Verizon's impressive coverage is working for me.

Good luck with Republic Wireless. Let us know how it goes. And remember, you do have a 30-day window to return the phone if it isn't quite doing it for you.
