I have yet to go through the unlock process with my Rezound. Before I did, I wanted to know if HTC asks you for specific phone identification information. Hypothetically, if I unlocked my phone and rooted but then unrooted, and needed to file a claim on my Verizon insurance if I dropped my phone, would HTC step in and say, thanks but no thanks.

Anybody with experience in filing a claim after rooting an HTC phone. I came from an OG Droid so I knew I could always pop an image on it and be good. Thanks in advance!

I've been fortunate enough to never have to file a claim after being rooted so I'm not sure if Verizon and HTC would ever communicate in that way. I can tell you this:

1. The unlock process does require you to send unique information to HTC and have that linked with the e-mail account of your choosing prior to them providing you the unlock key. They also make you affirm that you understand this process will likely void most or all of your warrantees.

2. As far as I know, at the moment your stock bootloader will read "Locked". After the HTC unlock process it changes to "Unlocked". The process can be reversed but, from what I hear, that labels the bootloader as "Relocked". So it seems at the moment there is not a way to return it to the "Locked" state and hide all signs of tampering with the OS.

This process is extremely different than what I used to root my Droid Incredible. New territory. Hope I don't regret rooting after only having the phone 3 days.

So what you are saying is that since I am brutal on phones then I should probably stay away from unlocking it through HTC and rooting this one. I had probably 6 OG Droids from warranty work or incident repairs but never had an issue. I would hate to have there be some major issue that pops up with this phone and not be able to get warranty work done on it because I had something on file with HTC.

If you just want to de-bloat. Look at Scott's CleanTool, it uses temp root and doesn't require unlock.

If your just talking about an insurance claim from damage or theft. I dont think the insurance company(who is not Verizon) would know, I don't think they would care either. As long as you pay the rates every month, they should have no problem replacing your phone.

If you are worried about the warranty and covering any sort of issue there, then I wouldn't do it. However if you are worried about the insurance coverage it's not like they repair your phone and send it back. It covers *lost*, *stolen* or damaged phones, that's why we pay a premium deductible in addition to the monthly insurance payment.

I understand what you are saying about the insurance. I have no problems paying the deductible if I screw up. Who am I kidding though? I loved messing with my OG Droid and feel like there is a ton of stuff on this phone I want to change, get off or mess with that needs root. I just would hate to pay $100 down the line for something HTC might have seriously messed up just because I unlocked it and they know about it. Kind of like the OG Droid having that faulty video connection cable that would fail about a year in no matter what on most of them. See what I mean?

this is exactly what im worried about as well... i wish we had some statement from HTC that could give us more information about what types of warrenty service they are planning on rejecting.
on my Incredible i had to get it replaced because the power button was extremely difficult to push down after about 11 months of use. i know that the software half of the phone would be my responsibility but anything hardware related i don't want to worry about.
i think despite this worry i will be installing cyanogen-mod as soon as they have a stable version out for me to play with
worst thing that can happen is i will have to go back to my incredible until i get another upgrade available on my account.

Ok, we've already heard tell of a few people returning their unlocked/rooted phones to Verizon successfully. As I've been saying for a while, this should not be something to worry about. If you want to know what HTC themselves will cover...ask. However you should be returning your phone to whoever you bought it from...Verizon, Amazon, etc...

i havent been active in the forum for over a year since i got everything working on my incredible so i hadnt seen any information on people returning the rezound after rooting it yet.
today might be the day that i unlock, root and rom my rezound

Cool! If you want peace of mind just get the insurance for 7 bucks a month.
