Here's a link to the new firmware (2.28 HBoot and 2.23.10.0123r, 2.23.10.0124r radios) without the boot.img and recovery.img...

The file in post 35 is what I used to update. If any of you are s-on like me, you will need to use instructions I posted on post 59 of that thread to flash new firmware.zip

You will need the following things handy: your htc dev unlock code, the stock recovery image from Scottys noob friendly root guide, and a boot.img from your current rom or whichever rom you plan to flash after updating firmware.

The firmware.zip update wipes out whatever recovery and boot you currently have on your phone, so you will need to restore after. Personally, after updating I was getting a weird error in Amon Ra after updating firmware; flashing the stock recovery, doing clear storage option then re flashing amon ra fixed the error.

Kudos to Scotty for teaching me how to manually install OTAs and firmware

Scotty, I am trying to manually install the new OTA, as I am having the issues with it failing installation. I downloaded the firmware.zip and followed the instructions in post #5. (I am currently running unlocked stock ROM after rooting with your guide). I followed the instructions from the quoted post #59, up to re-unlocking my phone. When I re-unlocked, I was stuck at the 4G splash screen, so I followed to additional instructions of restoring from the backup I had made. Doing so made my phone work again, but it's still on 3.14... and downloading the OTA again to update. I assume I need to follow your tweaked version of the instructions, where it says to flash the Global ROM but I'm not sure how to do that or what file to use. What am I needing to download/do to manually install this OTA so it quits trying to do it on it's own? Thanks in advance for any help!

The ROM link is in post number 1. You will just need to download it, place it on your SD card, then boot recovery and flash the ROM, like you did with superuser.

If you have already flashed the firmware, then you will not need to repeat that part

Hope that helps

Thanks Scotty! I had assumed the ROM in post one was for s-off phones for some reason. I flashed the ROM and am all up to date and didn't even lose any of my data. Only thing I have to do is re-delete the bloatware. Thanks again for the help!

Scotty,
Maybe you can help. I've followed these instructions to a T, and seem to be coming into some issues. I'm assuming with the firmware. After following these instructions (I'm S-On) I was able to flash the new ROM and firmware. However, my Wifi & Bluetooth do not seem to be working. It says 'error' in the Android settings. The first question I would ask is what should the correct software settings say?

My phone shows:
Software number 4.05.605.14 710RD
PRI Version 1.16_002, 3.01_002
PRL Version 15211
ERI Version 5

HBOOT 2.28.0000
Radio 2.22.0801r/2.22.10.0803r

Anything look off or missing?

may have answered my question. Looks like the radio that was flashing may have been an older version I had in a PH98IM file on my sd

NOOB Alert- thanks for the info. I have read several of your posts, and I am having problems. I don't understand some logistical items. such as when it says to flash firmware.zip - where does that file need to be for successful command? likewise with unlocktoken. and is there an .12 ruu file we need? gather that might need to be in same place as firmware, unlock...

I gather above are adb shell commands which I'm learning, but it's hanging on waiting for device with first command - will get serial with adb devices!? Lastly, do you still need to flash a boot.img and custom recovery image after above is done?

thanks for you time and contributions!

I am planning on flashing the new global rom and installing the new firmware update. I am currently unlocked, s on, stock rooted and launched permanent recovery (I think). When I rerooted last time, I think I inadvertently launched the permanent recovery instead of the temporary recovery. How do I verify if I did a temporary or permanent recovery? If my recovery is permanent, how do I go back to temporary recovery or do I even need to do this? I was reading the thread about the kernel not being loaded on custom roms for s-on rooted phones not using temporary recovery.

Thanks.

-things that are flashed to the phone from a command window, are placed into the folder containing adb/fastboot(miniadb_vigor if you use the guide here)
-firmware.zip is an official, signed by htc firmware package.
-not sure what youre trying to flash,so its hard to offer advice. but in general here are some steps to troubleshoot connectivity:
Quote:
troubleshooting connectivity issues:
-try a reboot of the PC
-try different usb cables and ports
-dont use a usb hub
-dont use usb 3.0
-make sure nothing capable of comunicating with the phone is enabled and running. htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, and even itunes have all been known to cause issues.
-windows 8 has been known to have issues. try a windows 7 or older machine

failing the above,
-i use these drivers for fastboot and adb(donwload and run as admin): http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe (mirror)

failing that, try manually updating the drivers in the following manner:
-put the phone in fastboot mode(select fastboot from the hboot menu)
-open device manager on the PC
-plug in phone, watch for it to pop up in device manager.
-update drivers with device manager, pointing the wizard to the extracted
driver download folder from above

note that you can check the connectivity of the phone, and make sure drivers are working by in the following manner:
-open cmd window. change to directory containing adb/fastboot utilities

-adb with the phone in the booted OS,usb debug enabled, enter:
adb devices in a cmd window

-fastboot with phone in fastboot,enter:
fastboot devices in cmd window

in either case,a properly connected phone with working drivers installed should report back the phones serial number.
alot of your questions will prolly be less confusing to you if you use the guide here to root

just boot to recovery(adb reboot recovery or choose it from hboot menu)

if it goes to red triangle and !,you have the stock recovery.

you can launch temp recovery with it permanently installed,if you need to,no biggie

if youre updating using the rom linked above, and the official firmware.zip, you wont need to install the boot image, and you could actually flash from permanent recovery if you want. the firmware package contains the boot image for the new rom.

Thanks, Scotty!

Through your response and additional research (xda, etc) I am getting a better feel for what I need to do ( I think). I am looking to do the same as radworm. Info online suggesting it's better to use firmware to upgrade v. global OTAzip due to OTA have patched radios etc. What I was asking above is that after firmware method (as I have read) require you to flash a boot.img and recovery at the end since the boot.img removed from firmware, etc. See the above includes flashing Amon at the end but no boot.img? when you say flash new global rom -your are referring to 207mb OTA.zip that's pushed from carrier? Thoughts?

If you boot amon ra in temporary mode using fastboot, you don't have to flash the boot.img you can if you want, but not required in that case.

Global ROM is not the same thing as the OTA zip pushed by the carrier. The full ROM is like 550 mb in size, you will want one like the ota blue rom I linked you to on xda (this is brenuga)

The OTA is the new radios plus patches needed to update the stock ROM. It does not contain the full ROM.

Firmware.zip is basically just the new radios. So you can flash that, and keep your current rom like it is, as long as you flash the boot.img from your current rom (in that situation you do need to flash the boot.img in boot loader screen, because you are not getting a new boot thru flashing a new ROM)

But its best to backup your stuff, do firmware update, clean wipe everything on your phone (except not the sdcard) and flash a new ROM, that is based on the latest version of stock rom. (OTA Blue or others)

Make sense now?

first, let me be a little clearer. sometimes my answers are general, and refering to what one could do in any situation. however,i think youre beoming a little condfused, since in this particular case,my response is specific to this thread, flashing the linked rom and the official, signed by htc firmware package.

this thread is for the folks that are stock, and want to continue being stock, and need a manual way to achieve that.

as obscuro(brenuga) said, the OTA is a bunch of patch files, along with firmware.zip that the stock recovery installs. it is not a full rom.

when one cannot OTA,updating the full rom manually will come in 2 stages:
1)flash the rom itself in recovery
2)flash the official firmware.zip file in bootloader

firmware.zip in this case(OTA to build 4.05.605.14) contains the following images/files:
-adsp
-android info
-boot
-hboot
-mdm9k
-mdmrcdata
-mdmmrfg
-radio
-rcdata
-recovery
-rfg
-sbl3
-tp_atmel
-tz

as you can see, alot of things get updated, not the least of wich is the boot image. this is why i stated above that if you were flashing the matching rom prior to flashing this firmware package, that you would not need to flash a boot image seperately,as firmware.zip is doing it for you.

there are other situations-for folks on custom roms that want the newer radios,or folks that want to restore a nandroid backup, and prolly other situations as well. those folks will likely need a new boot image, and new recovery after flashing firmware.zip. there are many wAys to skin the "flash a new boot image cat". easiest IMO is to just fastboot boot recovery as obsurco explained. more info on that here: s-on and want to flash roms? READ THIS but again,my answers were directed mainly towards the folks that want the stock rom and firmware.

i always like to be on the newest firmware when s off. when s on,i personally am alot more cautious,as you cannot go back to what you had before if the new firmware blocks an exploit,or has some sort of bugs or issues.

in all honesty,if you dont want the global software, there prolly is not a tremendous need to update the firmware only. if you like 3.14.605.13,the firmware thats with it is likely suiting you just fine.

hope that clears it up some for you guys. also, just thot id point out that being s-off makes all this nonsense tremendously easier

I need help. I worked several hours last night trying to flash the new global Rom and firmware updated without success. In retropsect, I inadvertently put the new Rom on the phones internal memory instead of the sd card. After realizing my mistake, I tried to put the Rom on my SD card which doesn't have enough space to hold the 500 meg file. Thanks to nandroid backup, I am back to unlocked, stock rooted with the original super user Rom, S on, and permanent recovery. I am still getting the annoying firmware updates which will not load.

I am going to pick up a new SD card with more memory. Are there any good custom Roms with ICS and Sense where I can just flash the new Rom on my new SD card and which includes the firmware, radios, kernel, etc. I seem to get hung up when I have to install the firmware. I mainly use my phone for basic stuff plus WIFI teather to connect my tablet.

Any comments would be appreciated.

you should be able to flash the rom from the internal storage, amon has an option to do so.

you can flash the rom i linked without flashing the firmware. you will just need to make sure that you fastboot boot amon so that it will install the boot image. im sure there are sense based, custom roms you could use,but i dont know what they are- i run cm 10.1 on my rezound,as im not a fan of sense 3.6(plus i cant be on ICS anymore now that theres JB )

no custom rom will contain firmware or radios-recovery is NOT capable of installing them.firmware must be flashed from the bootloader,so youll need to flash firmware.zip in order to update that.

you might want to look for roms here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1392

keep in mind that updating to the global software is somewhat pointless without the matchng firmware. thats really all the OTA is doing- givng you global capabilities.

if your content to stay on 3.14.605.13,look for a custom rom based on that. custom roms are typically modified so that they do not check for OTAs,so you wont be pestered with notifications.

Is there a Rom that you recommend? And if you can give me the newbie instructions on what I need to load, I would greatly appreciate.

no,im out of touch with sense roms. only one i could recomend would be the one in the OP. it will work with your current firmware.

im about to leave for a bit,but

basically:
1)boot amon (more info: s-on and want to flash roms? READ THIS )
2)flash rom

a mirror for firmware.zip(for the s on crowd):
firmware_4.05.605.14.zip

and what the heck,a quote of post #59

if you want to install the new firmware and software,a slight twist:
-fastboot boot amon. make a backup, full wipe, flash new global rom.
-adb reboot bootloader
-fastboot erase cache
-fastboot oem lock
-fastboot oem rebootRUU
-fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
(it will fail for with pre-update flush again immediately error). So do it again -->
-fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
(it will finish)
when its done:
-fastboot reboot-bootloader
-fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
A couple of more questions. Does all of this need to be done from the command prompt when connected to my PC? And when I fastboot flash zip firmware.zip, do I need to include the firmware file name (firmware_4.05.6.05.14.zip) with the syntax? Also, I take it the firmware zip file needs to be on the root of the SD card just like the global ROM OTA. I was having trouble flashing the firmware zip the other night from the command prompt. I am not sure if I was using the wrong syntax or the file was in the wrong spot on my SD card.

Also, I take it the firmware zip file needs to be on the root of the SD card just like the global ROM OTA. nope. firmware.zip needs to be in the adb/fastboot folder on your pc(miniadb_vigor if you used the guide here)

I was having trouble flashing the firmware zip the other night from the command prompt. I am not sure if I was using the wrong syntax or the file was in the wrong spot on my SD card.it cpould be either. you need to use the exact name of the file in the command prompt, and the file needs to be in the same directory as your adb and fastboot utilities, not on your phonres sd card
hope that helps

ok, I actually got these adb and fastboot commands running on my phone. Some of the command results were confusing; they would say okay for one part and second part failed. anyway, I finished with above (firmware only), and now stuck at 4GLTE??
Help.

Help.
saying some parts failed, some said ok doesnt help us to figure out what went wrong. youll need to copy and paste your ENTIRE session in the command window,if there is any hope to figure out for sure.

having said that,if you flash only the firmware, that is your prollem. as ive explained, the firmware package includes a boot image that is not compatible with the old rom. thats why ive recomended for s on users to:

-flash rom first
-flash firmware second

so that you end up with everything compatible.

at this point you have 2 choices for a working phone:
1)go ahead and flash the rim linked in the first post

2) flash a boot image thats compatible with the old rom on your phone.

in either case, youll need to re-unlock. in order to do #1,youll need to boot,or install amon after unlocking.

You cannot boot a .zip file. You must take the image out,and boot that:
fastboot boot imagename.img

Default borked phone

I think I borked it.

at the hboot screen I have..
S-ON
Tampered
Unlocked
HBOOT 2.28.0000
Radio-2.23.10...0124r

However, when I try to go to recovery I get the circle of arrows exclamation. When I try to boot the phone it hangs at the 4G LTE screen. only moderate success with adb/fastboot commands. thinking there is on custom recovery or correct boot image, but not sure how to fix this. thoughts or do you need more info. thanks in advance for your patience.

Update: finally, amonra installed & working. now I need to flash a ROM or OTA Global Stock ROM or some compatible boot.img...so confused

Update2: In business. Will need to check a few things, but think it worked!

catman, you are making this way harder on your self than you need to.

-boot amon ra
-using the recovery menu options, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache.
-flash the rom

thats it. it will work,i promise. from your bootloader and baseband versions, you are on the new firmware, and flashing the linked rom in amon recovery will get you up and running.

Scotty - Please help! I have a rooted, stock, amonRa phone (rooted by your guide). It was on version .14. I was following your steps from post 5, everything was going well until "fastboot oem rebootRUU." This caused my phone to go to a black HTC splash screen with white "HTC" letters, something I've never seen before. I let it sit for a while, nothing. I couldn't do any further commands as device was no longer recognized by my computer so I pulled the battery. Now It boots directly into fastboot. I can't get back into recovery and I can't get my computer to recognize my device. What can I do? Sorry, I'm probably in way over my head on this in the first place but I've been reading through all these threads and thought I could handle it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Update: I went ahead and skipped flashing the firmware and was able to re-unlock my phone. Not sure how this ended up working, but I'm back in business and it hasn't tried to push the OTA yet. We'll see if this works or if I start having problems in the next couple days...

if you have amon recovery installed, then you cannot take any OTAs. your best bet is to flash the rom, then flash the firmware.

not sure why you would have trouble after entering RUU mode(the black screen with silver letters). when that happens, usually an unplug/replug,swap usb cables, ports,or reboot the PC will work. also make sure youre using "fastboot" commands in this mode, not adb commands. without a copy of your cmd window, its harder to say what may have happened, ohter than fastboob oem rebootRUU booting you to the black screen is exactly what should have heppened.

I finally made it to the new 4.05.605.14 Rom and trying to get the new radios installed. Hours and hours trying new things and or different order I keep coming up with the same error. (bootloader) signature checking... Failed (remote: 12 signature verify fail) when flashing the new firmware. Out of ideas getting nowhere... S on...

sounds like you are just trying to flash the modified for s off firmware.

make sure youre using the official firmware from post #5:
firmware_4.05.605.14.zip

That is for sure the firmware I am using. The only thing I do not completely understand is: -fastboot boot amon.

I believe I have amon.img permanently installed on my phone if this is what you are referring. It seems you cannot run amon while installing the radios.

Would the firmware update run more smoothly if I just give up and S-OFF?

Thanks Scotty.....

To a "T" from your instructions post #5.
Minus "-fastboot boot amon. make a backup"
I am also using the full SDK-ADB program for sending commands.

I do not need a backup. The software loaded easily with your instructions.
My software is now 4.05.605.14
My radio's still remain 2.22.10.801r,2.22.10.0803r

Hey Scotty! I figured it out and now have 2.23 radios. Your directions above work great, but your link to s' on crowd seems to be an incorrect download.

I downloaded the firmware from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250494&page=4 : post 35 and your directions worked perfectly as advertised. Thank you for your time!

maybe you got a bad,or incomplete download from media fire,i downloaded from my link, checked the md5 against the file i allready had, then downloaded from post 35(where i got it from originally since i never did get my phone to OTA) just to be sure.

as you can see, they have the same md5

firmware_4.05.605.14.zip e64c2965ed04fe0518cb7375f9fd305a

firmware (8).zip e64c2965ed04fe0518cb7375f9fd305a

glad you are sorted, and sorry for the late reply

Slight bump on this - sorry, but it sometimes gets confusing when there's so much conversation going on in one thread...

I'm S-On, running a custom ROM and Custom Recovery.

I'm running TWRP 2.5 for my recovery. From what I can tell, you can't install the new firmware with a custom recovery installed and that the biggest problem for folks like me is that the new firmware removes the bootloader, which would prevent my phone from booting at all. So what I'm getting from the conversation in this thread is that I should:
-Make a full nandroid backup
-flash the stock recovery in the noob friendly root guide
-follow the instructions in post 5
-restore from nandroid backup (Which will also restore my recovery and bootloader but leave my radios untouched?)

-there is nothing about a custom recovery that prevents the new firmware from flashing. its simply that the official firmware package overwrites your custom recovery witn a new stock one.
-what actually keeps your current rom from booting when you flash the official firmware.zip,is the boot image(kernel) not the bootloader. unless youve flashed the new global rom, then this boot image is likey incompatible with youre currently running.

-follow the instructions in post 5
-restore from nandroid backup (Which will also restore my recovery and bootloader but leave my radios untouched?)
-definately make a backup(first step in brenuga's directions)
-no need to flash stock recovery
-yes,follow directions in step 5. follow brenugas directions if you are wanting to upgrade firmware and end up back on your current setup. follow mine if you want to just run the stock global rom
-restoring a backup only restores boot, system, data, and cache. not recovery or bootloaders.

so in a nutshell, just follow the directions in step 5
