Wow, sorry to hear that. How big are they? Any luck you can convince them to get the update? Here Rogers is a national carrier, so pretty big. I don't know if it would be easier to convince a small carrier though.
You might want to wait to see if the mythical Google Nexus One is just a new dev phone, or in fact a new Google phone sold directly to consumers.
Thanks! top phone on their market is still a Blackberry. Should have seen
the looks on their faces when I told them I needed APN settings for a android phone.

Actually took down the APN setting's of my Pharos Traveler 138 before
I sent it back for repairs & UPS lost it. That's how i ended up with the
great magic. Works ok just so much more that can be done with the upgrade!
This comes up on page 1 of a Google search for "Rogers 1.6" (along with our forum thread here of course, and the thread we started in the Rogers forums).
Ok, good stuff. I don't have a popular site or anything as it's mostly used for friends/family and people from my SMF forums project. Figured it can't hurt though
Perhaps their forums were hacked to run something malicious on load. Even when I go to their main page, Firefox blocks it.
People running IE probably shouldn't go there until/unless it is fixed.
You should see the big red screen you get when hitting the site with Chrome. I'm going to remove the link from the blog until their site is no longer showing as containing malware.

Just got off the phone with Therese from the OotP. What she told me fits in with what Sherri and Ethan had said previously, that they will be getting the update for testing and evaluation at the end of December or beginning of January and releasing it after some testing and evaluation. She got that information from their Tier 2 technical support.
She is going to speak to Mary Freeman to see where her information came from as she understands the importance of consistent information. I will let you know what I hear back from her.
I have also sent her a link to this thread, specifically to one of mjschmidt's posts summing up the thread.

Good to hear some consistency. Now we just have to wait till tomorrow for Brian to get back to us.
Not sure how to add it to Digg but I did add this forum to StumleUpon...that usually helps to get a lot of hits.
Anyone copied the links of the petition and forum on xda-dev Magic/Dream section ? This should also bring us a few hits and keep a crowd of new users in synch about their Rogers 1.6 update.

Hmm.. early this aft I had some trouble getting the forum to load, as in... it woudn't. I'm planning to save ever page of this thread so we have a backup of some sort, does anyone else want to do the same? at the very least, make copies of your own posts?
I'm a early adopter of the HTC Magic(first day actually) and I too was told that Android would be receiving regular updates due to its open source OS. I've been following this thread and others for the last week or so when I came upon this article today, I thought some of you might be interested.
While that's the same thing Sherry from the OotP told me, Mary from the OotP told Andy2010 they were testing it right now, so... take it with a grain of salt, since they can't seem to get their answers straight, and when I asked them about this, they didn't "correct" Mary's version, they just gave me the line about how they were looking into the update.
I can start to see it, give it another week and this outcry will have taken on a life of its' own and at that point there will be no stopping it. If we continue pushing hard enough eventually the main stream media will get hold of our quest and there will be the big embarrassment for Rogers if they haven't done anything by then.
Right now there are a few of us that are pushing this issue really hard, quite a few that are making contributions as they can, some people chiming in now and then. But.... judging by the number of hits this thread gets there are many more who are watching on the sidelines to see what happens. You are the ones that we need to step up to the plate, If you are on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or any other social media sites, we need you to start linking back to this thread, the blog and the petition. Go ahead and send tweets to @RogersMary and @RogersHelps even though you know that you will get the canned answer.
You see the links for Digg, del.icio.us, stumbleUpon and Google at the bottom of the page. Please use them if you are with any of those sites, if not then join and then use them ;-)

Reason: Added requests to click links.
I wonder if any of the execs at Telus or Bell are following this thread. If they are they'll be really happy it's not them. They won't say anything though because they could be next, if their customers get as upset as we are.
I want to thank Big Dog and Schmidt for revving up the engine on this. I am an early poster to this thread and have been watching closely for any updates. I too have submitted a complaint to the Rogers OotP as well as placing numerous calls to Rogers CS, Tech, Relations. My 'Dream' is that we will one day get this update pushed through to all 1.5ers....Eve, Magic and Dream. We need it now! No update, no paid apps....what a joke. Good luck signing me to another agreement Rogers if we don't see some action soon.
Any luck with the media?....oh wait I think Rogers owns that. Somebody call CTV....wait they're busy with Olympics.....
Waiting patiently....at least for now. Rogers please come through for your customers!
"We often lament the fact that the Android operating system is a wee bit fractured, with devices running on a number of versions. How bad is it, you ask?The Android Developers blog spells it out in the chart above (erm, their numbers, our chart): Most of you are running Android 1.6 (myTouch 3G and G1 on T-Mo)., followed by 1.5 and 2.0.1 (Droid owners, that's you!)
Those numbers are based off devices that accessed the Android market for 14 days ending on Dec. 14. We know that Sprint plans on upgrading the Hero and Samsung Moment next year. As for the rest? We'll see."
-------
Hey, Rogers, see that above!? You are leaving your customers in the minority of Android users worldwide!!!! Almost 3/4 of Android users are ABOVE 1.5!!!
I've been following this thread and I decided to go to the HTC site and look what I found:
Can I upgrade my Rogers Magic device to Android 1.6?
HTC is not currently planning any Android 1.6 upgrades for Rogers Dream or Magic. Android 1.6 was only made available for “Google”-branded devices such as the G1. It is not available for HTC-branded products such as the Dream or Magic, which use Android 1.5. We believe that Android 1.5 is a stable and reliable software platform that delivers a terrific user experience

That's wrong!
There is a thing called "google experience" and Rogers phones do have "google experience" otherwise you wouldn't have Gmail/Maps and other closed source Google apps on it!

Sounds like Rogers has leaned on HTC and they've agreed to take the hit for no updates or...they'll go straight to 2.0.....Don't hold your breath.
Now what are the options if this is the end of the battle?
2.0 is not possible atm. If T-mobile are not going to update their G1 to 2.0 or 2.0.1, very unlikely you see anymore update. Unless Rogers willing to pay HTC to do it.
Got my Rogers bill today and was charged 97$ over usual for no reason so I called tech support and spoke with the manager. He sorted things out no problem. I started talking about android: mentionned that 1.6 was out (the usual bla bla bla, I always say the same thing when I call rogers) and without me mentionning anything else, he told me that they had been given a formation on new android versions. He said that Rogers will release the new version of android in early 2010 with the launch of new android phones and, when I asked why we did not have 2.0 (released last month) or 1.6 (released in septembre) he said that Rogers is waiting to update with the latest version. He said that my LG Eve did not have the latest version of android because it was released this year (2009) and they're waiting in 2010.
They know that Bell has 1.6 so they will update with possibly 2.01 or AT LEAST 2.0. They wanna be ahead of everyone else in 2010
For the scepticles, I asked for confirmation of this information, and he confirmed.

I guess the only way that Rogers is going to make their android customers happy and earn their trust back is to deliver 2.x

I've been to that HTC page before looking to see what it said, and I don't recall seeing that. I can't prove it, and I hate to stray into conspiracy land, but I can help but wonder if that info re 1.6 was added recently at the behest of Rogers.
Mr. Szeto also called me to say that he hadn't heard from the other depts yet and promised to call me tomorrow.
I think it's time we did a little digging with HTC because we're getting conflicting info again. HTC has previously told us that the 1.6 update existed and that Rogers just had to request it to make their modifications.
Edit: Further, if HTC is now claiming they have no plans for a Rogers 1.6 update, why did multiple members of rogers OotP tell us they were getting it for testing an evaluation? I want to know who does the actual modifications to the ROM. Does Rogers do it, or does HTC do it on Rogers behalf? Maybe Rogers looked at the update from HTC (the testing and evaluation) and then told HTC no _after the fact_?

You know that the only way that 2.x would fit on the dream would be with the apps installed on SD. Not even the guys over at XDA have gotten 2.0 to be fully functional on the G1 yet. I think that it's only a pipe dream to think that Rogers is working on 2.0 for the dream. If Rogers is skipping 1.6 and going to 2.0, at best the magic "might" see it an certanly the Dream won't.
But then again I could ge wrong and Rogers is out to one up everybody to have the first Dreams and Magics running 2.0 ;-)

Looking at the HTC site again, I just realized, they've redone the whole site! It used to be when you went to htc.com you could see _all_ the worldwide products. Now when you go to htc.com, it automatically redirects you to HTC - Mobile Phones, Smartphones, Cell Phones, PDAs! No matter what you do, it redirects to this page! You can now only see the Canadian phones, and for the magic there is only the Rogers Magic. There's even a link to "Buy from Rogers"!
Ladies and Gentleman, I do believe we've been scammed by Rogers. The HTC site is now _different_ then it was even a few days ago, and I doubt it got to be the way it is now without input from Rogers.
You can bet I'll be bringing this up with Mr. Szeto when he calls tomorrow. If we are right, and _Rogers_ has decided not to buy the 1.6 update from HTC, and if they won't be releasing 2.0 for Dream and Magic, then they will have screwed us over.
I just emailed HTC support to ask why they won't release 1.6 for our phones when we know it exists and we know the phones support it.
"Why is HTC not releasing the Android 1.6 update for the Rogers HTC Dream & Magic. We know the update exists, and we know that the phones will support it, so why can't we have the update?"

It is possible to have 2.x fit in dream. That is not a problem. Initially, 1.6 was the same thing but after the final compile, it was less than it was expected. 2.0 still have an issue to solve which is the camera driver. Unfortunately the driver for the camera is a closed source. But if Rogers willing to pay for it, i don't see that is a problem.

We shouldn't be giving up on 1.6 so easily. We _know_ the update exists, and we _know_ it works on these phones. I want to know if Rogers is pulling some strings at HTC to avoid having to pay for the update.
