Sounds all well and good but is ancient news and we come back to this every few years and it never changes for the good. The only way things will change is when we stop buying contracts and start buying unlocked phones. Then we don't have to argue with providers when we don't like what they do. That competition bureau is not there for you and me.

Default Sense UI for my rooted Dream?

Well I rooted my dream today and it sure is nice. I get consistent 3G now where before I never got it. I was hoping to have the Sense UI on it though. Is that an extra that can be put on?

Thanks

You rooted AFTER Rogers 911 update? How?

Regarding Sense, you have to look for modded ROM that has it. AndroidSPIN | You heard it here, first, on AndroidSPIN. Your No.1 source for Android news.
there is "Latest ROMs" box on the side.

I have $5 that says it is a left over Dream and he now has a Magic with the new ROM. The Dream should still work and if never updated will happily run root and v1.6.

and yes, Sense too he he wants.

Yes I took advantage of the upgrade offer and received a Magic. They didn't want my old dream and since they refuse to upgrade it I rooted it.

Default Set WiFi to not disconnect

You need to change the settings for your WiFi in the phone. The default is that the WiFi will disconnect when the screen goes off.

Do the following from the home screen: Press Menu\Settings\Wireless controls\Wi-Fi settings\Press the Menu Key again\Advanced\Wi-Fi sleep policy.
Once there you can choose between three options.
I have mine set to "never".
There is an app that will place a widget on your screen and you can toggle between "never" and "default". It is called "WiFi Lock"

Thanks!! It had stopped doing that after the first day but I still like the idea of putting the setting to "Never".
Thanks again for the tip!!

You can also use the HTC settings widget which can turn off mobile networks (3g it 2g) as a battery saver.

I just spoke to a Rogers tech about the issues we are having, he informs me that any phones that are NOT updated will eventually be completely blocked from the system and not be able to make or receive ANY calls!

I don't know what this will mean for rooted phones.

Rogers froze my rooted Dream today (all my outgoing calls were redirected to them) so I switched back to my Magic, then phoned them and they unfroze my phone once I assured them that I had the 911 patches done. I don't like the way this is turning out, I really like my rooted Dream and it would be terrible if they made it so I can't use it.

Default Rogers... are you still there?

So, wtf. Am I EVER going to get my promised upgraded phone (Magic/Dream)? I mean, SURELY by now they have updated any phones in stock (or are they all gone from stock?) (or are they EVER going to have more stock) and I should be able to upgrade my phone.

Right?

Or am I dreaming in a pipe.

Hi Snack - The upgrade is back on now. Have you seen the details? I'd suggest you call into Care and ensure they're looking at your account details.

Thanks for the update Mary.

You think that Roger's would have fulfilled their promise to me that they "have it on file and will contact you as soon as we have more phones in stock - you don't need to call back any longer".

Then again, they've never lived up to their other promises, so why should this one be any different (please realize this is anger directed at Roger's, not you personally Mary - I appreciate what you've done).

Of course, customer service is closed right now - not sure if they are even OPEN on Sunday, so how do I fulfill the Feb 14th deadline?!

Default *shakes fist*

Yeah, so - tried calling yesterday. Roger's phone support gives message of "Please call back during regular business hours". Without actually SAYING what 'regular business hours' ARE.

SO - I see there is live EChat. After waiting 25 minutes, get someone online with me - tell him what I'm there for. "We do not currently offer customer support via live EChat - we are for technical support".

"Is customer support OPEN on Sunday?"
"Yes - 9-5"

Just called Roger's (10:55am Sunday). "Please call back during regular business hours".

SO - Apparently I will be outside of the Feb 9th-14th timeframe (I'm guessing Roger's is closed tomorrow for family day?). I can't WAIT to have this fight on the phone tomorrow or Tuesday.

What number are you calling? I just tried calling 1-888-ROGERS1 and someone answered my call.
If you are calling the business side you may be out of luck until Tuesday.

I tried dialing *611 in my magic and got someone. Even if you can only ge5 tech support, just make sure that you get them to put a note on your account that you called for the dream to magic update on the 14th but nobody could help you.

Default Finally!

So - yes - with a bit of struggling the solution seems to be in.

I >was< on a corporate account prior (long story), but had switched over the phone in question to a regular service. I don't know if I remained within business/corporate b/c my other line is still there, or if they just forgot to transfer that one over - whatever - my account still shows as corporate and corporate is closed on weekends (or at least Sundays).

I did manage to get a CSR through regular 1-888-ROGERS-1 and I explained that I had just spend 25 mins on the phone with a CSR until getting transferred to the corporate solutions and finding out they were closed. A very helpful CSR tried one thing and couldn't do it, then said he would transfer me to the retention department because they have a lot more access to accounts than he does.

After a rather long wait on hold (it's the weekend, I'm sure they are lightly staffed and I don't hold that against them - I work weekends too - bleh) I got another very helpful CSR (Retention-CSR? ) who says he does indeed see the note in my account and is currently processing the order (just checking to be sure he has the process correct).

So *fingers crossed* - it looks like I'll be FINALLY getting my upgrade phone! Just waiting for him to come back on the line and give me the details and tracking info!

Yay! Thanks Mary and others.

Al

p.s. All CSRs today were very helpful - even with the transfer to a dep't that was closed. It's a big company, I don't expect every spoke in the cog to know the business hours of every department .

Default *sigh*

Sorry for the double post.

*sigh* - but, of course, that silly little business code won't let them process it!

He said he could take it (business code) off, process the phone replacement/upgrade and put it back on, but that doesn't take affect until the next billing cycle (Mar 7th!) so he put a long note in my account explaining why I'll get the phone tomorrow when I call the appropriate department (they are closed weekends).

I can taste it!

ew.

Default Getting close to mid-year

HTC and Rogers said at the beginning of the year that by mid-year the HTC Magic would be upgraded to Android 2.1. Well with only 6-7 weeks to go until mid-year I haven't heard boo from either HTC or Rogers. Has anybody heard anything on the upgrade or has it been forgotten. Also when should we start to inquire (Bug) HTC & Rogers on a timeline. I'm already unable to get programs into my phone that I want due to being stuck at 1.5.

This is going to be something which needs to have a watchful eye on. I have a feeling that as in the past, this Android 2.1 update for the Magic is going to be delayed. My gut tells me. Spoke to RogersMary today at the X10 launch party but no solid information was provided.

I am skeptical as always....

What really pisses me off is that there are users who are using Magic devices and experiencing numerous problems. GreatBigDog01 is one of them, and I am pretty sure there are many others out there.

Rogers nor HTC are doing SHIT about that. Lack of leadership I say.

I'm still upset that the stupid bug with QWERTY vs AZERTY hasn't been addressed yet. I won't even use my contract phone. I bought a 'clean' Magic and updated with a less buggy ROM. But even those of us with phones running otherwise better ROMs are having one really irritating problem, we're still prone to having data cutoff. I tested an old radio ROM for two days and sure enough got cutoff again. So I'm back to the new radio.

However we shouldn't get too ansty and pushy, just wait for whatever they eventually do. I give up on their technology and motives. I only hope that they cough up a 1.6 for the Dream or offer an option to unlock and make them rootable so that people can make them useful.

I can assure you of this, they'll never offer us the option to root our phones. I just hope the next update will bring something usable. Or better, someone finds a way to root updated phones.

I hear that the Hero is going to be delayed until May in getting it's 2.1 update, and HTC promised that update when the phone was released.

Telus To Delay HTC Hero 2.1 Update Until May 2010 | Android in Canada Blog

Since the Hero and Magic share so many of the same specs, hopefully it won't take HTC too long after the release on the Hero to have the update ready for the Magic.

Except for all the very special and very useful "Rogers" modification they have to add to it. <nudge nudge, wink wink.

Does the Telus Hero not have any Telus customizations? They used to be the worst for crippling phones with their Garbage software.

Also, delaying until May isn't all that bad considering it's already April 20th, although that doesn't mean anything for us Magic users.

I feel that we, as a community, have been very patient for the last few months as we've waited for Rogers to release 2.1 for our HTC Magics.

I sincerely hope Rogers recognizes this as patience, and hasn't been interpreting our relative silence as a loss of interest.

I'm very much anticipating the release of 2.1 on the HTC Magic, and I know of others who don't post who are also looking forward to it.

Personally, I'd love to hear a little "fear not, we're working on it" from Rogers.

Or, perhaps, an anticipated release date?

Default Sony Ericsson X10 is the device!

All of these issues with Dream/Magic is why I ordered the Sony Ericsson X10.

The X10 is bad-ass!

I feel for everyone who traded their Dreams for Magics. They are both garbage devices + crappy camera + bugs + having to factory restore my Dream at least 5 times (literally) = sucks BIG! (not BigDogs)

Call Rogers and get a "real" Android device. Customer Retention is where I went to make this happen.

My X10 is on it's way. I've had a chance to play with one in the store. I've been waiting for this handset forever (since Nov.)....they couldn't pay me to use an HTC device EVER again!

Pretty cocky for someone who's only played with an x10 in a 'store'. My phone might be garbage to you but I assure you that it is a real android phone which is much more real than any phone you don't yet have. let us know how much you love it when you actually have one.
My only problem with any phone is the provider.

Two words for your Dream/Magic...Force Close. I'm sure you've seen that on multiple occasions...probably today.

Viking, just read up on it...the X10 I mean. C'mon...you gotta be inhaling that volcano dust if you think that a Dream/Magic can stack up against the X10. It doesn't matter what ROM you're running on it. I've the bloody thing since last October. I'm speaking from an informed and highly disappointed perspective.

I too thought I was getting a good device when I ordered my Dream. It didn't take long to prove I was wrong.

I love Android and just want a top-notch device to run it on. That's the reason I'm going with the X10.

And by the way, your comment is pretty cocky coming from someone who is using a useless device.

Can't we all just get along? Let's update our friendship to version 2.1? Somebody call HTC and Rogers to see if that's allowed...or if they're working on that version. Wait I have a Dream....not enough RAM for version 2.1

Wow dude... I've been harsh with people on this forum before but your just being a douche for no reason. Hope you enjoy your 1.6 until freaking September (or later) and good luck getting assistance on this site if you need it...but I'm sure with that massively overbuilt UI that took Sony like a year to get working properly, you won't have any bugs at all and it'll run perfectly smoothly forever. So your obviously in the clear.

Just got this from HTC about the Magic. I havn't bought my device yet, but want to make sure a 2.1 update is coming. Don't know if there is any new info here but I'll post it anyways.

Quote:
Hi, I'm Sara and I would be glad to assist you today! I understand you’re looking for information about the update to Android 2.1 for your HTC Android device. I do hope that I may be able provide that information to you.

At this time, the information that I have available is that this update is on it’s way, but currently no date has been set for release. It is scheduled for the end of April, but this may change, as it’s important to HTC, Google, and the carriers to produce a product that will not have any bugs, and also will work for everyone.
HTC does appreciate your patience in this matter, and we here at HTC are just as excited as you are about this update.
Your phone should be upgraded Over-The-Air. You can expect a pop-up message on your phone when connected to the Internet once it is ready.

As soon as this update is to be released, HTC will post this information at HTC (htc) on Twitter. You can also follow this information by joining YOU Club on our website at HTC Mobile Phones - Product Support - Smartphones Help. If you have any other comments, or suggestions, I invite you to take our Customer Satisfaction survey at http://www.survey.htc.com/worldwide.

Thank you again for your interest about this particular matter, and I hope this information was helpful. Have a wonderful day!

I think "Scheduled for the end of April" is more than anyone's been able to get out of HTC or Rogers. Way to go!

Yeah, sadly when Puleen, Don and I asked RogersMary (and her boss) about it last night, they said that it was still on target for "mid-year" and that you should take what HTC reps say with a grain of salt.

HTC reps, like Rogers CSRs, seldom have all the real, up-to-date info, so as much as I'd like to believe it's true, it's most likely not. If it were scheduled to come at the end of April, I think Mary likely would have given us _some_ info (like maybe a "it's coming sooner than we expected, but I can't say more).

Chances are, if Mary says it's on track for mid-year (June-ish) then it likely still is.

It if changes, I'm pretty confident she will tell us something.

Sadly, HTC reps (not being in Canada) also seldom really know the difference between the different carriers, and may have confused the question with another carrier/phone (like HTC Hero, which is getting 2.1 soon, and is very similar to the Magic).

Oh I'm well aware that the rep was probably wrong but I'm going to trade a bit of disappointment at the end of the month for 8 more days of hope that its coming sooner than later. It's just how I roll....

So any updates on when the Magic will be getting 2.1? It's getting close to 3Q, isn't that when they said the magic will be updated?

It will be in June, but they haven't given a firm date yet. Afaik, though, they are on track for June.

Thanks a lot, it's good to at least have it narrowed down to a month now. :P
