I am curious to see how bloated and slow and unusable the rogers version of 2.1 is when it is run side by side with cyanogenmod's 2.1 port. That will be a funny test. Way to go rogers, when are you just going to change your slogan from "Canada's mobile network" to "rogers, bringing you yesterdays products sometime next month."

Maybe it will be good? why so negative?....
The 1.5 update to sense was/is awesome, I love it and its much faster than the stock piece of crap they originally had on the magic. I don't use the phone for games and useless apps, so whether it is 1.5, 1.6 or 2.1 doesn't affect me. I am looking forward to vpn support though and voice searching, google nav, etc..

What do you want them to do, they weren't going to do anything at all but at least we will get 2.1 now.. not everyone wants to mess around rooting their phone anyway, so have fun with your cyanogenmod and i'll wait.

This is exactly *why* they should have been offering ROM updates right from the start. That's the majority of the reason I, and I expect many others, wanted to root my phone; so that I could experience what Android actually is, rather than what it was sometime in the past.
I do understand that most people don't care about such things, so long as their phone works as they expect it to, and there's nothing wrong with that. But there's nothing wrong with wanting to experience the latest updates, either, and Rogers shouldn't be arbitrarily restricting these devices.
Moreover, you're right, Rogers wasn't going to offer anything at all, and now Magic users are getting 2.1, and that's a good thing. I expect there are a great numer of people out there that are very pleased with that fact. The problem is that they didn't come to this decision because it's the right one, they came to this decision because people fought for it, and Rogers eventually realised that it was in their best interest to not ignore these people for too long.
It's been said before (and I appologise, I forget who said it) that Rogers had no idea what they were getting into when they decided to support Android. This, I think, is at the root (no pun intended! ) of all the problems we've had with Rogers. They're used to selling phones that are relatively static from the moment they're sold until the moment they're thrown out or upgraded. Android isn't like that, Android is (ironically, considering the name) far more organic, and needs to be treated as such if Rogers actually wants to support it. This means not only ALLOWING it to grow, but SUPPORTING it in it's growth. When you try to restrict a plant too much as in it's growth it will die. Try to restrict Android too much in it's growth and it will, insofar as your sales are concerned, die. None of us want that to happen, I think all of us want Android to thrive and continue to grow, but what does that growth matter if there are no providers that are willing to support it?
Just pointing out that Rogers and HTC have failed again.
Promised upgrade to 2.1 by mid-year has not happened and no word from either one on when it will be available.
I guess as an existing customer I don't mean much to either company.
That is why I recommended to my friend not to switch to Rogers and he went with a different carrier.
I guess Rogers is "Too Big to Fail"

Brief review please!
Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to say that I am totally supporting you guys with this. I was interested about getting an android phone, but then i found this forum, which states that Rogers are not updating android phones... I really want to know about this issue, and i'm not looking forward to reading 35 long pages of posts.. so I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to give me a brief review of what's going on. Thanks so much!!!

Well here we are near the end of June and still no word on the 2.1 update (2.2 is already out so that means that the 2.1 update is already out of date ). We were told that 2.1 would be availabe by mid summer. According to this twitter message to me from RogersMary, rogers has not yet recieved the update from HTC.

@bunhead Hi there, as you know we need to wait for the manufacturer to provide us with the update.

So after Rogers gets the update, the update will still have to pass through their rigorous internal testing (good thing they rigorously tested that 911 update that they forced on us eh? It sure would be embarasing if the update worked like crap and had security issues wouldn't it ?). So after HTC delivers the new update to rogers and it passes the rigorous testing it will be available when? September? December? This is a frigging JOKE! I purchased a phone that was supposed to be cutting edge and have all these great features. SO far I am around a year into owning this phone and it has NEVER been cutting edge and I have had little to no access to the cool features. So rogers I ask you, will you reimburse me for all the money I have given you for data services? Data services which you have cut off from me in the past. I have not been able to use the cool features of this phone, cool features that I was TOLD I could use when I bought the phone in the first place. I am willing to pay for the phone calls that I made, I am after all a fair man, I will pay for the services I have used, but to be told that I could do all this cool stuff and then not to be able to is a pure and simple lie.
So I am wondering this how long rogers can fail to provide us with what was promissed before we can demand to be let out of our contracts? I sure would like to use the new Google maps or the new Google navigation that just came to Canada, or Google goggles or any of the ever growing number of apps that only run on version 2.1 and higher, but alas I cannot because rogers already has me locked into a contract until July 3rd 2012 (not that I am counting) and I am stuck with them.
At the moment, as you may have seen in other threads, Rogers has announced that they have the Magic 2.1 update in-house and are now testing it. They "anticipate" having it out to us by the end of August.
We've already told them that is not acceptable.
Please feel free to bombard them on Twitter, via email, and by phone. Make sure to elevate until you get to the Office of the President.
It took all of us bitching at them last time to get anything out of them, it will require all of us again. Tell them of your displeasure.

WAY ahead of you brother I am hoping to get the time to call my contact at the office of the president later on this week. This delay is mostly due to work and I want to calm down first so I don't say something stupid
I have a HTC Dream and after reading this forum it seem that I'm stuck with android 1.5. But I came across this article where they talk about a ''real'' android phone call the GeeksPhone. Does this phone work on the Rogers Network? If it does, I might buy one.
Wow, what a read. I accomplished no work today as I read every single post lol.
Glad to see we MAY get the Update.
I just got the Rogers Branded Magic that is unlocked and I am using on the Fido network.
Before I found the thread I was on the HTC site and tried to download the latest updates.
It asked me to put in the Serial number, I used the one from the box and from under battery (same#) but it says the serial number doesnt match?
Whats up with that? and does this mean I will not be able to dl the 2.1 when/if it arrives?
From what I have read here (and elsewhere) better chance of seeing 2.1 than 1.6 lol
Just not sure why I can't Download and Updates @ htc.com?
I can not find any updates @ rogers, probably because I am not their customer though.
I am on the Fido network.
There is no update for the Rogers Magic available to download yet past the E911 update that added sense ui to it.
There will not be any 1.6 update and currently Rogers has the 2.1 update in house doing some testing on it. I is supposed to be available to the public before the end of August.
You could choose to go the route of rooting your phone and today, install a custom 2.1 ROM or even 2.2 ROM.

Thanx, ya I realize that, was just worried I would not be able to get the update when it comes as I could not download from HTC due to serial# issue. HTC as now removed the requirement of the serial#.
How do I know what is loaded? (how do I find out if I even have it? )
and what is SenseUI?
The info I have found in phone is
HTC Magic
FW v 1.5
BaseBand 63.18.55.06KU_6.35.10.18
Build 3.05.631.7 cl#118917
I went over to HTC.com and under support, Magic, (Magic Rogers), System and Upgrade, Can I upgrade my Rogers Magic device to Android 1.6? The last sentence indicating that the Magic would get the 2.1 update has been deleted.
What's up with that?
