I was so glad to see the news about the new carrier this morning. Still wondering about Dave, too.
I might just try to take advantage of the fact that I have a friend who gets to offer Telus Employee family and friends deals. He might be sorry that he extended the invite so far because I've got lots of questions for him.
@Jag: welcome to the thread! Sorry you got sucked in to this like the rest of us.
As for rooting the phone, there are threads in this forum that will show you step-by-step how to root (even some that say it's very easy. Apparently there is a one-click app that will do it).
It would be preferable to keep this thread on topic of trying to get 1.6 out of Rogers, but feel free to create a new thread in the Rogers sub-forum dedicated to the cause of rooting Rogers phones.
P.S. Good luck on your exams! :-)
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll keep this thread on topic.
Also, I forgot to point out in my initial post that I bought the phone in mid-October. When I spoke to the tech support guy then, he said the update would be out mid-late November. Obviously that hasn't been the case.
It sucks because my family and I have been loyal Rogers customers since as far back as I can remember. We have all of our essential services (home phone, internet, digital cable, wireless phone) set up with Rogers. We have 4 family members all on a family plan together with Rogers for our wireless needs. I can't believe Rogers would go and screw their loyal customers like this.
I decided to register after following this thread for the last couple days. I upgraded to the HTC Magic on the first day they came out. As a programmer, I was intrigued by the open source nature of the OS. I have rooted and installed a custom ROM, but there are little things broken on many ROM's. I would much rather an official update from Rogers.
I was always under the impression that there would be updates, but knowing Rogers I was not expecting speedy action. I hope this Simon guy is mistaken.

I hope so too but he insist that he can obtain information that others couldn't because he's acting on behalf of Mr Nadir.
It seems we are being given the run around when we ask about a 1.6 Donut update. Our American brothers have been running 1.6 for some time now. Many users have been in contact with seemingly top people at Rogers and no one can give us a straight answer. Some customer service reps are even telling people that 1.6 is already available to download. The link they provide it to a security update they released in August for 1.5. This is not acceptable.
A representative of the CEO of Rogers replied to a user and told us not to expect the 1.6 update as he thinks we want it just to hack our phones. This is absurd, of course.
As a reader of the BGR, I think it might be worthwhile to inform your readers of this and help with our fight to get Rogers to give us a straight answer.
Thank you for reading.
Andrew
I always check the BGR daily and they were the first to inform me of the Android phones coming to Canada. I hope they can post a story about this to help our cause.

I told this simon guy that I just got this phone 2 months ago and now you're telling me it's obselete?? He said well.. any computer you get now, 2 months from now will be obselete. This is ridiculous. I told him we are strictly talking about software update not hardware update. Then i said why do we have to ask for firmware update when our neighbour state already got theirs and was pushed out by their provider without the consumer asking. He said, you know that US market is big right? Another BS.
Adding comments to the story will help with indexing on the search engines and keep it front and center. Make sure in your comments you include the words Rogers, Android, 1.6, and the type of phone you have. We want people researching future purchases to find these things.

Rogers HTC Dream...still stuck on Android 1.5
Sounds like collectively we have hit up all the major tech sites Would be nice just to get a solid answer from Rogers, even if that answer was "no update".

Hey y'all, I decided to join as well after checking up on this thread for the past couple of days! [and cause it seems you need a little more female presence ]
I bought the HTC Dream the DAY it came out after following the G1 in the states for awhile. My initial excitement took a serious hit after they dropped the price by $50 in the first month (and wouldn't credit my account) and then even further the next month (maybe it was just a sale at best buy, but it hurt you know?).
Now with things like google goggles, turn-by-turn navigation and the google maps update we 1.5 users can't get, I'm pissed. I love android but Rogers needs to figure out what's up. I haven't thoroughly read this thread but I'm sure you've heard that Telus apparently has sole rights on selling the Droid here in 2010? Besides making me tear up just a little, maybe having an AWESOME (and up-to-date) android phone on one of their competitors will push them to finally do something...well hopefully :|
I love the pressure you guys are putting on them! Thanks for the hard work so far =)

Since I have most likely been banned, someone should make an account on the FS forum and say they really want to buy one of FS's Rogers Android phones, but want to know if anyone knows whether or not it will be upgraded to 1.6.
Then someone else can answer that Rogers won't confirm or deny whether or not they will update the OS. That would seem to satisfy the requirements of the FS forum. ;-)
UPDATE: Here are the new warnings I received from FS:
"
Hi mjschmidt
I'm sorry to hear android will not be supported by Rogers, but this is a Future Shop forum and is not the place for this type of Content. As I have linked to you before, our guidelines ( which you have agreed to follow when you created your account) prohibit the posting of this type of content.

The Future Shop forums are not the place for this type of content, I'm sorry for this but... the rules are the rules.
Thank you for understanding."

I might be mistaken, but you were not injurious or objectionnal towards third parties AT ALL. Oh well, it's just FS. They can't do much about our situation, anyway.

Well, I guess he though Rogers might be offended that I pointed out the truth, that they won't confirm or deny whether or not they will upgrade our phones to 1.6! ;-)

Brilliant!
Also I've sent a letter to the Toronto Sun in the hopes that someone takes an interest.

Reason: additional info
I really don't want to offend anyone here, but with Android 2.1 coming out anytime soon, don't you think that it is too late for asking for Android 1.6 update ???
I think we should put all our efforts and interest behind requesting for Android 2.0 update instead. No doubt Rogers HTC Magic device hardware with 288 MB RAM is capable of taking load of Android 2.0.

What say you ???
No offense taken. :-) I agree with you in principle, however in practice I think it might be even harder to get _that_. When I spoke to Sherry from the OotP, she put me on hold to talk to Tier-2 support, and told me that while she spoke with them, them checked the HTC web site and saw that an update was available. That sounds like she was saying that until I called to complain they didn't know (at least in that office) that HTC had 1.6 available!
Now, we might get lucky, and they might have also seen that 2.0 was available, and maybe, just maybe, they will announce in the new year an impending release of 2.0, but until then, now that we've all been pestering them about 1.6, is it possible that asking about 2.0 might just confuse the situation?

I've started posting in the "Mobile Syrup" canadian cell phone users forum. These are people who talk cell phones, but not necessarily Android, so people researching cell phones might end up here.
I am getting blowback from some posters who seem to be equating 1.6 with Sense UI, and suggesting that it is an HTC issue, that HTC is skipping updating Dream and Magic to 1.6 to go straight to newer versions and that we have to wait for HTC to "push" out the update. One poster also suggests that asking Rogers to keep our Android phones cutting edge is equivalent to asking them to keep old StarTacc phones cutting edge. WTF?

For those that can afford it, looks like 2010 will bring us an unlocked phone from Google. The phone is to be build by HTC and will feature the full blown Android OS with all the bells and whistles.

I personally thought it is bad idea for Google creating his own device since it might slow down expansion of Android OS. Yet after all this story with Rogers I've changed my mind.
I certainly will not purchase my next phone for my wife (that I planned to do very soon) from Rogers and I'll never sign 3 years contract again because I don't think I would benefit from it.
I'll wait and I'll buy next phone from Google: it will keep me all headaches and endless discussions with Rogers RCS, empty promises and confusions.
The only thing that could probably change my decision is a clear message from Rogers: an official promise to update my phone to version 1.6 and 2.0 in next few months.
Personally I don't believe it could happen

The "google phone" will apparently not have a "telephone" radio. Only data. So you will need to find an unlimited data plan. Calls will be voip.

There is no such thing as a "telephone radio" or a "data only radio". Everything is digital. For example, Rogers operates 2 different bands (850 MHz and 1900 MHz). All the different technologies (GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPA) work on those bands and can be used for making calls or downloading data.
As far as I can tell, the so called "Google Phone" (aka HTC Bravo / HTC Passion / Nexus One) is nothing but another Android phone (albeit, a very high quality one with a snapdragon processor and running 2.1).
The fact that Google employees were given this phone to test might only mean that it will also be released as the next dev phone, or "ADP3". Just like the Dream and the Magic were.

Agreed.
I don't know when this device will be available in Canada. I don't know thing about warranty & service. I even don't know if it will get updates either OTA or USB.
But I'm so frustrated with the current saga that I'm ready to take a risk and pretty sure it will be better than Rogers "service"
I haven't heard a thing from them. As a matter of fact, I think that they are ignoring me. Not replying to any tweets I send them, they haven't responded to any email in about a week.
I first spoke with Chris on your live chat support tool regarding this issue. He recommended that I try filling out your contact us form. I sent in my request for information through your contact us form on December 10th and have not yet received a reply.
I am losing my patience with my concern and would like answers. I own a Rogers HTC Magic smart phone and would like to know Rogers' plan regarding firmware updates for it. The Android 1.6 firmware has been released by HTC to all carriers and has been pushed to customers through carriers in other countries for the same phone hardware. This updates contains some key functionality that is not in the current version, functionality that new applications on the Android Market are making use of. As a result there are a growing number of applications that will not work on a Rogers HTC Magic until you release the 1.6 firmware update.
I would like to know if and when Rogers plans to update the HTC Magic and Dream and LG Eve for that matter. You are currently selling these phones as the "ultimate web phones" making them sound like the latest and greatest, when in reality due to lack of updates they are behind the times and out dated.
Sincerely,
Jeff Dodds
Sent the above to the OotP.

I am rooting my LG Eve. Found on another thread that the LG Eve will not be upgraded due to the fact that it's been optimised for social networking and for the cup cake version of Android.
