Default Rogers now has "Draft" OS 2.1 in-house

Hi all,

Here is some info from @RogersMary on Twitter about the Android 2.1 update.

Quote:
RogersMary Okay Magic fans, I have an update for you! Rogers has received a draft OS 2.1 Magic upgrade from HTC.
Quote:
RogersMary We’re in process of testing. No solid release date as that depends on Google's approval as well. We anticipate end of Aug but plz stay tuned
Not as soon as I anticipated or would have hoped to see the update but hey, at least it's progress. Hopefully everything will work out well during the product testing phase and we end up with a great product.

gbd

And for those of us that have been 'testing' 2.1 for months, it works perfectly fine and is a huge improvement. The only thing I can see that the official 2.1 does differently is to use the new radio and maybe Sense UI.

I can ignore the R apps and remove the icons but what made me wonder about the so called "testing" is that none of them ever worked. Things might have changed since then but it doesn't give a good impression when such 'care' and 'concern' for my 'user experience' is met with custom apps that don't work at all.

I did notice that the Rogers stuff was kept to a minimum on the Acer LE, Wallpaper, splash and a few shortcuts. Hopefully it will be the same again on the Magic with the new update.

And those shortcuts went to the marketplace. The actual apps were NOT preinstalled (at least not on _my_ demo unit).

I DMed Mary on Twitter to ask if the Rogers stuff would be the same as we have currently, removed, minimized, or otherwise changed. She said she would look in to it, but wasn't sure if she could comment before it was released. Which is kind of pointless at that point, since we will just see it.

This is truly a huge let down after all they told us at the end of 2009. Now we have to wait till August for 2.1 when 2.2 is already out and has been for a few months and then 3.0 to be released by the end of the year. This is totally unacceptable and a load of BS.
Thanks to all of you who are fighting the fight for all of us. Keep up the good work!

Too little too late. I'm running Froyo on my Magic already, and have no plans to switch to an inferior Rogers rom. Way to go, Rogers.

Plus 2.2 now has handsfree voice dialing, the way it should be.
Issue 4848 - android - Have voice dial work through bluetooth - very important driving safety isse! - Project Hosting on Google Code

If we get that, then I can legally drive and talk with my phone, like I could with my ancient dumbphone.

Well it's August now, so we'll find out how many weeks until we finally get 2.1 this month.

Unless of course it's further delayed until past August and we need to continue convincing Rogers about 2.2

With each passing day I'm feeling more and more like I should've got a nexus one or just rooted when I had the chance.

You could still root it if you wanted to.
