I think its about time to start a thread on how to root Dream and Magic.
i found a couple threads on this subject but they are a mess and hard to understand.
Has any one rooted there phones?
Specific to our Rogers phones and maintains the Rogers radio as well... As long as you don't need Exchange contact and calandard sync then you are good to go... Mind you there is a free contact sync app in the market already, so really only the calandar was an issue.
Since I use my phone for buisness and we have an exchange server I actually reverted back. It's really simple to do that with either a nandroid backup created before you update:
i was going to try the unlockr link as well. did you find you had any issues with the phone afterwards? were all the apps working after you installed the new ROM? i've read some people have had camera issues.

I used the The Unlockr to unlock my phone and install the "Amon Ra’s Clean Donut (Magic, 32A)" Rom.. works great.. the Navagation with good maps is amazing.. there now is a hack to get it to work outside the USA.. This rom is the best one I have tryed.. way faster then the rogers rom.. you can even use this method if you have done the upgraded firmware from rogers as well..
Also everything works with the "Amon Ra’s Clean Donut (Magic, 32A)" ROM Camera you name it and its Android 1.6..

Thanks. I think I might use that ROM. You just have to follow the videos for rooting and adding the rom, right? Or is there anything else that needs to be done? Will this ROM allow you access to the paid apps and is the hack for the Navigation included or is that something extra?
So far I've tried CyanogenMod only and anthough the speed increase was quite noticable, the lack of Exchange support had me revert to the stock 1.5 ROM at this time.
I've been thinking of actually going to a 2.0 ROM even though it lacks camera support (yup, I need Exchange that bad!) ;-)
So anyone find a 1.6 ROM that's got full Exchange support yet? (Not just Work Email)
And anyone installed a 2.0 image on a Rogers Dream yet? Means changing the radio if I understand correctly and that part's got me a little nervous...
Vikingisson, what ROM is that?

yes, I can't tell any difference other than I couldn't find the app until I noticed Work Email. Same settings as before. I don't need this app as much as some people and I only have it sync once per hour but it does exactly the right thing.

ya just Follow the videos and thats about it its very easy..
In all cases this uses a seperate mail client which is not ideal but functional. Guess I've been spoiled by the Rogers Rom...
I think it is the proprietary HTC email client that you miss that Rogers bought with the (slightly) modified ROM. It is the same client that all of the provider ROMs get and independent 3rd party ROMs are not allowed to distribute. Personally I think we should be allowed to download it from HTC at minimum since we originally paid for it on the same phone. They could ask for the serial number perhaps which then lets them know we have the right phone. Won't happen and is part of the problem with our phones and providers. Decent compromise given the stupid legal fiasco we face in Kanada. Oh well, I'd rather have 1.6 and a slightly less than ideal but usable (cough) exchange (cough) client.
Lesson for me is that I'll never again buy a locked phone from any provider. Pay the bucks for the open phone. But rooted and ROM'd will suffice for now.

just followed the above instructions and am now on 1.6
there were a few sphincter tightening moments, a couple of unexpected restarts but it works great.....faster then the rogers 1.5 load and I do like enhancement
a couple of things noticed that weren't mentioned (or I didn't see mentioned)
-shows up as a T-Mobile image which I don't think is a big deal other then it does include some apps (like the music store) that are IMO useless
-if you try to clear the browser history it crashes
that said, I had no problems with it synching to my google account (I don't use exchange so thats not an issue) and running all the apps I previously installed
Yep, go ahead and delete them. Now that you have Cyanogen on your phone don't forget to perform a nandroid backup before you go to do any updates to it.
What version of cyanogen did you install?

A couple comments re the cyogenmod 4.2.13
1) In the upgrade/release notes they state that the Enoch theme is compatible. It doesn't cause the phone to crash but for some reason it does force it to stay in 2G mode.
2) 4.2.13 seems to have messed with the APN settings which had a serious detriment to the speed (even in 3G), not a big deal just reset your APN to:
You can use APN Backup to backup the APN info to your SD card if you don't feel like typing in manually (as opposed to typing it in telekinetically I suppose).
Obviously you will have to reinstall APN BAckup to get them back. Of course maybe y'all should use something like Astro File Manager to back up your apps to SD card as well.
I'm new to the whole rooting thing..I've ordered my magic through the upgrade program rogers have going on right now. I want to know what happens if something goes wrong. If anyones checked the comments for the video regarding the rooting process (the first vid in post #2) it says some people with rogers magic's encountered some problems. Does that mean that their phones are completely bricked or is there some sort of recovery feature? Also, will i still be able to recieve OTT updates from rogers if I decide to root and use a different ROM?
Also there are only 3 different ROM's on that site..Ive been hearing a lot about cynogen (?) rom's is it that much better than the hero rom offered on the website?
Thanks for the help

Rooting is not for the faint of heart. There is a definite chance that you can brick your phone. Why is it that you want to root your new magic in the first place? Is there something that you want to do with your Magic that you can't do with the stock ROM?
If you wait a couple of weeks HTC will be providing an update to the Magic that will include HTC sense, which is the same user interface (UI) that the Hero has.
Most of the root ROM's are running 1.6 or 2.0 but if you wait HTC will be providing 2.1 with the HTC Sense UI by mid year.
CyanogenMod is nice, it's based on Android 1.6 but has 5 home screens instead of 3 and has some of the 2.0 stuff backported onto it. When we get HTC sense, I believe that it has 7 home screens and again the Magic will be getting 2.1 soon.
With the Dream, root is good to have because of the limited memory space. You can run Apps2SD which moves your applications over to the SD card. The magic has much more internal memory and can hold much more applications without having to do this (apps2SD will reduce the life of your SD card)
One big advantage of rooting is the ability to install market enabler which allows you to spoof your origin to the Android Market. With this program you can get access to paid apps in the Android Market.
Rogers does not provide OTA upgrades to it's customers. Only google branded devices receive OTA upgrades. The Rogers Magic and Dream are HTC branded. When an update is available for ours it will be posted on HTC and Rogers web sites.
Rooting voids your warranty (even for non software issues)
So are you really sure you wan't to Root that shiny new Magic?

Personally I have no intention of rooting my magic (wow, that sounded really dirty). Provided Rogers/HTC follow through and release the 1.6/2.x upgrades there's really no need to. Keep it legit and use the dream as a platform to play with.
1) In the upgrade/release notes they state that the Enoch theme is compatible. It doesn't cause the phone to crash but for some reason it does force it to stay in 2G mode.
interesting. I'm on 4.2.13 and my APN is exactly as you show so mine didn't go away or change to something else. But I really appreciate your note in case others have the same issue as you. And as they tell anyone asking about the best version of Cyan: "latest is the greatest". works for me and is nice to have USB tethering builtin, works without anything installed on the PC or phone. Just activate and plug in the cable.
and a reminder to you lucky (former) Dream owners, I'm looking for a wayward Dream to try some devel on. free or cheap.
After waiting for a week or so to see what will happen to the Rogers Sense UI update, I decided that it wasn't for me. It seems that the interface is more of a "toy" than actually useful.
So, given that, I decided to root my Rogers Magic and use Amon Ra's 1.6 donut Rom. My plan was to use the Unlockr's method. It looked simple enough. However, the flashrec.apk failed to backup. The Unlockr stated that it may be because I have a custom recovery image. However, I doubt so, given that I have SPL 1.33.009 and Radio 3.22.20.17. I don't think it is a perfected SPL.
Given that the unlockr had no other solution, I decided to use the Relentless Rooter Method, as posted in XDA. It requires saving files to the computer and using the USB cable to attach to the phone. I followed the instructions and this time it worked.
So, if the unlockr method fails, do try using the Relenless Root method.
So far, I like 1.6 donut. Nothing fancy and seems to be stable. Amon RA added a patch to allow multi-touch.
Ah, do budget about 3 hours for everything to be done.

THX visitador02. Nice to know that there are options available!
Now the obvious question. Do you still have data? If so did you need to call in for a refresh?
Actually, I am not in Canada, so the Rogers data blackout did not apply to me. I was just waiting to update to the Sense UI, after hearing how great it is. Now, after reading the reviews, I found it is better to use Donut 1.6.
Oh, btw, now the phone start up with Rogers screen followed by T-mobile. lol!
