Default UPDATE: From RogersMary - Details of Rogers Dream to Magic Exchange

RogersMary (the Rogers rep we've been dealing with via Twitter, email, and these forums) just informed us a few moments ago that Canadian owners of the Rogers Dream would be given a limited time opportunity to exchange their Dreams for HTC Magics, so they would be able to get the forthcoming updates.

Details are to follow, and there is nothing official in-store or online yet. I would assume this is only for people who bought their phones through Rogers, ie. if you bought it on ebay, I doubt you'll get an exchange.

Here is Mary's post in the forum: Rogers Dream 1.6 Update

This is very good news for Dream owners (although I am not one of them) and kudos to Rogers for stepping up to the plate. I just wish they would take the initiative with Android instead of always having to be prodded into action. Probably this whole situation has helped them to get up to speed with the what Google is trying to do so that they don't stay trapped in the old model.

Speaking of speed....when is Montreal going to get the 3GS speed upgrade? It was announce months ago but we're still puttering along at 1.2 or so.

Here are the new details of the exchange for Rogers customers who purchased an HTC Dream on contract and want to get the Magic.

"Hi Everyone:

Here are the details of the HTC Dream to Magic upgrade that Rogers announced Friday:

--Current Rogers customers who activated a new Rogers HTC Dream through Dec. 31, 2009 - either through upgrade or a new activation - may upgrade that device to an HTC Magic for a limited time.
--Upgrades must be done through Customer Care (1-888-Rogers1) or through Rogers.com (existing 3yr data plan required for online upgrades, instructions below). This special upgrade offer does not apply at retail.
--This limited-time upgrade is available between January 12 and January 26 only.
--The $79 upgrade cost of the device, plus the $35 administration fee are being waived. Customers who choose to take advantage of this offer get a $599 phone for $0 with the renewal of a three-year term from the date of the upgrade (For most customers, this will represent a contract extension of seven months or less).
--The upgrade is completely optional. Customers who choose to can stick with their HTC Dreams and remain in their current contracts.

If you run into any problems with this upgrade, please contact the @RogersHelps team.

Why is Rogers doing this upgrade? Simply put, we're committed to our Android phones and Android customers. Although we pushed HTC to provide a 2.1 OS upgrade for the Magic, they could not do so for the Dream device due to memory limitations. We knew we had to help our customers with this one-time limited-time offer.

We'd like to thank all our customers for their patience and hope you continue to enjoy your Rogers Android experience.

To upgrade your device through Rogers.com, you must have an existing 3-year data plan. Otherwise, please call Customer Care at 1-888-Rogers1:
--Go to http://www.rogers.com
--Log in to your account through MyRogers
--Follow the Upgrade My Phone link

Thanks,
Mary"

Hi all,

This is my 1st post here, but I've been lurking around various Android forums as well as XDA. Thanks to all of you who pushed this saga to it's current state.

However, I have a problem with this solution...

To be eligible, users must have a 3-yr data plan. I got my Dream phones (yes, 2 of them on a family plan) last October, thinking, like everyone, that I was getting a good OS with an upgrade path. Alas, as we all know with this Rogers/HTC saga, this upgrade path is a dead-end for the Dream.

Given the outrageous amounts of money Rogers gouges us for data plans, I simply sucked up the $100 DETF (data early termination fee) for each phone, and decided to live with Wi-Fi only, which is fine for our needs. We don't need real-time sync and data, but when we do, we're within a Wi-Fi zone (i.e. at home, office, or at friends.)

So, I'm left in the same mess as before this "upgrade agreement" was announced. To make matters worse, I've spoken to 3 Rogers CSR on the phone, and they all say "What is this promotion? We are not aware of this..."... They are almost telling me "@RogersMary" is just "anybody" on Twitter and what comes from her is not official Rogers policy... I'm basically getting stonewalled here...

Whether I'm on a data plan or not should be irrelevant to the issue here, I'm on a 3-yr voice plan, and have paid all penalties/whatever that comes with my decision to not got with data plans. My previous PDA was a Palm, which was continuously updated as required. At some point, after 4-5 years, the new OS versions did not support the older Palms, but at least I had support for 4-5 years... I bought the Dream knowing full well that 1.6 was coming, but looks like I got the wrong end of the deal with Rogers... and my phone is obsolete 3 MONTHS after I got it...

@RogersMary, or mjschmidt, can you help me out here?

Thanks!

You only have to be on the data plan to request the upgrade via Rogers Web portal. If you don't have a data plan you need to phone Rogers Customer Care at 1-888-Rogers1

Well, that's what I just tried, calling in... I spoke to a first CSR, who did not know about the "deal"... I escalated, which he obliged, and the 2nd one did seem to know about this, but told me I had to be on a 3-yr data plan. I escalated again, and this time, back to square one (not aware of deal), and to top it off, says "there's no official policy about this, and you can't always believe what's on the web..."

Rogers' left hand still doesn't know what the right one (RogersMary) is doing... Plus, the fact that there's nothing public on the Rogers' web site about this, makes it easy for them to say "Where did you see this?" and basically tell you that the Internet is full of lies...

I'm by no means defending Rogers but keep in mind that they have hundreds of CSR's and there is time required to train all of them on new procedures or processes. If you're having problems with the customer service team contact RogersMary or The Office of the President.

The swap program wouldn't have been created by RogersMary and would have to have come from their Product Marketing group since they would have responsibility for the P&L. There's likely nothing on the public web as they would want to limit the cost of the program and by keeping the communication to sites like this they can address the most vocal and interested customers without the fear of negative backlash.

According to @RogersMary you need to tell them to take a look at your account. The upgrade offer is attached to your account and when they take a look at it the offer should be there. If it's not then contact @RogersMary directly via Twitter and she will take care of it for you. Hope this helps!!

I have DMed @RogersMary on Twitter to ask her to take a look at your post.

Like GBD said, if you are eligible for the upgrade, the info should automatically be in your account notes. Don't call and ask about the deal, call and ask them to look in your account notes for the info about a NO COST upgrade from the Dream to the Magic. Keep escalating if you have to. In the mean time, hopefully Mary will have a look and be able to help.

Was just taking a look at rogers.com and noticed that the HTC Dream is no longer listed for sale. Interesting development.

Default Important Message from Rogers re. HTC Dream

Hi Everyone.
I'm here to share some urgent news with our Rogers HTC Dream customers.

We have contacted all of our Dream customers by text message asking them to disable GPS location on their HTC Dream device to ensure all 911 calls complete.

HTC is expediting a software fix to the 1.5 Android Operating System that will address this issue - and provide several other improvements to the OS.

We expect this upgrade to be available very soon. In the meantime, Dream customers need to follow these steps:
1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite

Please note that the Rogers HTC Dream is the only device affected.

Protecting our customers' safety is our top priority and we communicated with our customers as soon as we were made aware of the issue. We have texted all affected customers and we have immediately requested that the device be taken off the shelf until HTC implements its upgrade.

Thank you,
Mary

So far for me, that's false... You need to be on a data plan to be eligible to this upgrade, even if you call in... I've tried twice, and get this story... Will try to see if @RogersMary will corroborate this...

This is true. You are required to have a data plan. If you signed up on a 3 year contract and got the dream you would have been forced to get one as if you had upgraded as well. So it looks like your not eligible.

This situation pretty much makes me hope Videotron gets it's own 3.75G network up soon... I signed up with Rogers for a 3-yr data and voice plan last October, choosing the Dream for it's keyboard, and choosing Android for the fact that I'd get an OS that would "keep up", at least for a couple of years or so... After figuring that I didn't need the data plan, I did the math, and simply paid the DETF, and got rid of it. I still extensively use the phone as a PDA, but Rogers insists that I'll be obsoleted within a few months... and Google makes sure I can't get paid apps (I know, this is a separate issue, but a bummer nonetheless...) If at least I could move on the Magic, and have access to Android 2.0...

Looks like as soon as I can (i.e. Videotron gets "online"), I'll get rid of Rogers... I'm already a Videotron customer for landline, Internet, and HD cable TV, and have always had perfect service (i.e. my modem-cable was non-functional after 15 months, out of warranty. They replaced it no-charge all the same and have kept me a happy repeat customer. THAT is customer service.)

Default Important Update re: Rogers HTC Magic

Hi All-

We are in the process of contacting all of our Magic customers by text message asking them to disable GPS location on their Rogers HTC Magic device to ensure all 911 calls complete.

The same issue was identified on the Rogers HTC Dream, as communicated on January 15. At the time, our testing indicated that the Rogers HTC Magic was not impacted. However, through continued precautionary testing of the devices, we discovered the issue is replicated intermittently on the Magic device as well. HTC is working on a software fix that we will make available as soon as possible.

In the meantime, Rogers HTC Dream customers need to follow these steps:
1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused our customers. Our priority continues to be customer safety. As with the Dream, we are contacting via text all affected customers and we have immediately requested that the device be taken off the shelf until HTC implements its upgrade

Thanks
-Mary

RogersMary, thanks for sharing this. Could Rogers elaborate more on how this bug came out to being? What is he cause of this bug and is it related to the customization which Rogers had asked HTC to perform for Rogers branded phones only? This seems to be a major bug which disables one key capability, the ability to call 911. Is this something which Google needs to be notified about?

When will the update be made available? And how does this bug affect the plans for updating 1.5 and eventually making 2.1 available to users? What type of testing is going to be carried out to ensure that as a result of HTC providing a fix for this bug, no other major bugs are created? Does Rogers test all the updates provided by the manufacturer? If so, what is the testing plan? How confident is Rogers that such an issue will not arise again?

These are all important questions for us to know, because we're now finding out, after 8 months of the HTC Magic being released that there was a major flaw in the device which remained hidden until now. This goes to highlight more and more the lack of understanding Rogers and HTC have about the Android platform. Still think its worth bragging about bringing the "revolution" to Canada?

The issue is not a new one. Apparently Google (and Cyanogen) fixed it months ago. we'd like to know how it is Rogers and HTC didn't know about it till now.

Default Update from Rogers re: Dream/Magic 911

Hi All - Wanted to share the following with you:

Rogers believes that telecommunications services play an important role in ensuring public safety and we take the safety of our customers extremely seriously. One of the ways we are helping to make sure our customers are safe is through enhancements to 911 calling that use advanced technology to locate a wireless customer’s current location and provide it to emergency workers.

We have been rolling out these 911 enhancements and the vast majority of our network area now has this important safety feature in place. However we have learned that there are problems with the operating software of our HTC Dream and HTC Magic devices that – when combined with this new locating technology - could lead to 911 calls not going through in certain situations. This was not an issue when we first tested the HTC devices last Spring.

Over the past week we have been notifying all our HTC Dream and Magic customers about this issue and removed these devices from sale. However, we are not satisfied with this situation and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this has caused our customers. We take this matter very seriously and we are currently investigating the way this issue was addressed to determine how we can improve our internal and external processes.

HTC is working on a software fix that we will make available as soon as possible. We are expediting the testing and implementation of this fix working with HTC.

In the meantime, we recommend all Rogers HTC Dream and Magic customers follow these steps to ensure GPS is disabled on their phones:

1) Select Menu
2) Select Settings
3) Select Location
4) Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite

Thanks,
Mary

Thanks,
Mary
Thanks for the update Mary!!

I've contacted CBC Marketplace about this issue. Wanting OS updates is one thing, but a phone that can't call 911 because they didn't fix it in time is another completely!

I called in for the HTC Magic upgrade on Jan 13, and still haven't received it yet. Have they stopped this upgrade since there is an issue with the HTC Magic also? I'm reading that sales have stopped for both phones now.

I'd call Care to see if your phone was shipped. Yes they have stopped selling the phones now and the upgrade promotion is on hold. But if you called for yours on the 13th you should have it by now. I called for mine on the 18th and it was shipped on the 19th (just before the fiasco hit). When you do call into Care, get them to give you the tracking number.
Hope it works out for you.

I haven't called Rogers to get my Magic yet and I'm glad I haven't. Knowing about this bug for four to five months and doing nothing about it is completely unexceptable.

I can't believe Rogers didn't catch this bug during their extensive testing phase they claim to do... wasn't this "testing phase" one of the original reasons Rogers gave for why they hadn't released 1.6?

I don't know what to do at this point. Do I keep my outdated and unsupported Dream or do I renew my contract with Rogers and be stuck with them for an extra 7 months with two outdated and unsupported phones (which would really be 4 phones since I have 2 Dreams).

Obviously at this point we can't trust either company to provide support for either phone. Who knows what other known issues they're sitting on?

Will the upgrade promotion be extended? Will they offer a different Android phone instead? I only have 5 days left to decide what to do.

I'm paying Rogers a lot of money over 3 years, and this is how I'm treated? Which is why I find it so hard to believe the communtiy provides faster and better support then Rogers or HTC. Twitter / Steve Kondik: The fact that this issue i ...

You got yours pretty quick.... 1 day turnaround! I just received mine today. Rogers gave me a tracking number when I called them a couple of days ago, but they gave me the wrong one. Anyway... all good now. Thanks.

If I was Rogers I don't think I would be looking at any more devices from HTC after all this crap. What did HTC do, loose their source code for the Rogers Magic / Dream? They should have been able to pull the fix from the base Android Source and recompiled a fix to have available the same day as the GPS problems were revealed.

Probally just waiting until they are ready with whatever other update that they are doing to release a fix. Leave it up to Rogers to eat the wrath of their customers.

This was a problem with the tmobile g1 and MT3G aswell. It was fixed in android 1.6 update so it has something to do with android

the fact that it was fixed in the 1.6 update still comes back to rogers/htc for deciding not update the dream/magic in line with the people in the states..

I know that, I first brought this to the attention of @RogersMary last month and HTC responded to her that it wasn't an issue in Canada because of no E911. The Android 1.5 base source code has been fixed as well so all HTC should have to do is grab the patched module out of the base source, replace the offending module in their own source code and then recompile to create a patched Android 1.5 version for us.

All I was saying is that either HTC didn't keep the source code that they used to create the Dream / Magic ROM or they are waiting to include the patch with whatever other little fixes that they are planning on.

Do you have a Dream, or a Magic? If you have a Magic, you will eventually get the update to Android 2.1. If you have a Dream, you will get NO MORE updates.

If you have a Dream, and you bought it with a 3 year contract BEFORE Dec 31, you can request to receive a Magic. This upgrade program is currently on hold as per RogersMary, who says she will let us know when it is on again. You can contact her via Twitter at Mary @ Rogers (RogersMary) on Twitter

Angry htc dream 1.5 + 911

Yes I have a dream, I will be calling rogers in the morning, with all that I have read now I will be seriously looking at the magic....if not or rather If i don't get satisfaction I will be demanding a 8g iphone, or leaving rogers. I got pushed into this "dream" by a rep at a store, and I had planned on the iphone. Seriously pissed off right now. Will post more after I call them.
Grrrrr.

Yep, got a Tweet from RogersMary a little while ago saying she would post here when she had the details on the Dream>Magic upgrade coming back on line.

Thanks for RogersMary, thanks for this forum and the users who have been pushing the issue.

Arrow magic upgrade...

Just got off the phone with Rogers, yes this whole thing is on hold. I was advised to give them one week til everyone upgrades their phone with the 911 thing then they will continue with the sending out of the magics. If i don't get this done I will be pushing on with the request for the bb bold 9700 or i phone. Get this, i asked to be escalated and he tried but apparently the 2nd level wasn't about to take my call. they are denying twitter's link to rogers mary and others is real. whatever. also he basically advised me that i can request the upgrade as a second on my account but i can't cancel the account. (I DIDN"T even mention cancelling the account at this point. Are they telling me to consider going else where???) Should be really interesting in this business over the next few years as american companies infiltrate canadian market. Rogers mary : if your listening, I know you are only trying to help us all out here but what kind of outfit do you work for? wow!

I've been getting the run-around all day on the phone with Rogers today on this offer. This morning, the CSR's were not aware of the offer, now I ust got off the phone with their customer care (sales) dept and was advised this offer has been suspended. I was advised that the offer was in place as they were not sure the 911 update would work with the Dream phone. I told the sales guy that my understanding was that the upgrade to the Magic phone was not being offered because of the 911 issue, it was being offered because of the software update later this year that only the Magic users will be entitled to. He said that was not the case, the offer was because of the 911 issue. Sounds like they just had to come up with some excuse to me.

Great, now I'm stuck with a phone where the software will NOT be updated later this year.

Not happy the way the 911 issue was handled either because of the fact I have Windows 7 and could not do the upgrade on my whole computer. I think that Rogers handled this whole thing very poorly.

Default offer...

That is the explaination i basically got too, but they assured me that if i called back in a few weeks i would get one, and i advised i would be demanding the iphone if i didn't get the magic. i really hate the thought of not having the slide out keyboard but hey if the phone will last me longer and have more apps, i will continue the fight.

This is insane. I am getting the runaround as well. I called on Jan. 12 to be upgraded to a magic, and it sounds like the CSR I spoke to made a note that she signed me up for it, however forgot to actually send the phone. Every day since the 12th I have checked my mail with eager anticipation. Today it still wasn't here, so I called Rogers to see what the deal was.

"Yes, I see that you called on the 12th and it looks like the woman you spoke to signed you up for the offer, but we don't know why your magic wasn't sent out then. It's very unfortunate. This offer is now on hold, and we can't send you a magic. I know it's unfortunate. Have a great evening."

What makes it worse, is I told my buddy about the deal and he called I think on the 16th, and got his magic within 3 days.

I'm so mad about this! I was just starting to like Rogers, even to the point of defending them, but this is nuts.
