If you use google for your contacts, they are backed up there. So when you put your gmail account in, it will bring your contacts with it. MCB is worthless.

Well, google is built into the phone and works much much better. I can go online and edit everything about my contacts, sync up, and its all on my phone. MCB will take all my facebook and twitter contacts and put them in as contacts on my phone. I cant call Krayzie Bone, wish I could, but I cant, I only have him on facebook and twitter. My opinion obviously.

I stand corrected on the update. Mac users will need to go to a US Cellular corporate store to have the 2.2 installed on the acclaim. PC users may be able to download the update to their computer and then install on phone. Available Jan 15th.
Not being into facebook or twitter I can't say how My/contacts interacts with contacts. MyContacts works great for me, with online editing, syncing w/phone, etc.

i can do without some of the US Cell crapware as well. After the froyo update I may root to remove the stuff I don't want. Than again I believe one of the 2.2 features is actually being able to run on the SD card so it may not be necessary.

Oh well, for now, launcherpro hides the crap I don't want anyhow so I don't even need to scroll beyond the stuff I'll never use and can't(normally) uninstall.

my personal experience (with the Samsung Moment on Sprint) is that, when you reflash the phone with 2.1 (rooted or stock), if you log into your google acct and go straight to the market and then "my apps" after google is done syncing, it will show EVERY market app you previously had installed on your phone. Now, it ONLY SHOWS THE FIRST TIME YOU GO TO THE "MY APPS" PAGE!!! if you navigate away from the my apps page (except to check one of the apps you have in "my apps"), all the free apps will disappear when you return!!! So, the best way to get all your previous apps installed is open each one in "My Apps" and choose install. Of course, it's best to do the free apps first, since they will disappear if something goes wrong, but the paid apps wont. Again, this is just my experience with the Acclaim's equivalent on a different carrier, so i dont know if it's always the case. So in short:

-Reflash the phone
-boot the phone
(-I personally suggest enabling wi-fi if a network is available, to make all the following go faster)
-Sync your google acct
-When done syncing, open the android market
-Go to "My Apps"
-You SHOULD see all market apps previously installed on your phone listed, both free and paid
- starting with the free apps, open each app individually and install
-While doing this, NEVER navigate away from the "My Apps" page EXCEPT to choose an app in the "my apps" list!!! And if you need to go back to "my apps" from an app's page, use the back button, NOTHING else! Any other form of navigation will reset the "My apps" page to only show paid and installed apps.
-Again, follow the instructions EXACTLY!!! if you do ANYTHING besides what's listed in the instructions (turn off the phone, boot to recovery to apply a ROM, etc), the "My Apps" page will be reset, and you will have no way to get your free apps list back and have to install them by searching manually! So please, follow instructions!

ONE MORE TIME, THIS IS ONLY BASED ON MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!!!! I DONT KNOW IF THIS APPLIES TO ANY OTHER PHONE BESIDES THE SAMSUNG MOMENT ON SPRINT!!!! But anyway, I hope this helps someone.

PS: If you have a rooted phone, try "MyBackup Root" (free) or "MyBackup Pro" (paid) from the market... it allows you to backup all your apps and data, INCLUDING market links... that means when you reinstall the backup using mybackup, you will be notified of market app updates, etc just the same as if you manually downloaded them from the market, except much faster, and requires no data/wi-fi connection (unless you decide to make an internet backup instead of an sd card backup).

the difference between "root" and "pro" is that "root" ONLY works on rooted phones, whereas "pro" works on both (when using an unrooted phone with pro, u cannot restore market links).

Nice, Ill have to check and see if that is how it is for the Acclaim. I have used Astro to backup my apps and then reload them, havent checked going into the market the first time and seeing if the free ones are there. Interesting!

just a note for those who dont have a rooted phone, appbrain/appbrain.com has a nice syncing feature that will leave a record of the apps you have on your phone. it acts like a different kind of browser (thats the only way i can think to discribe it) that is for the market place but one of the perks is that you can sync with the online web site and if you need to start over when it comes to you apps, whether its cuz you reset your phone or reflash it or whatever the case, it will send links to your phone to you of everything you had on it before the re-sync. hard to explain but really simple to use. hopes this helps people.

Hooray! Is there a download for Mac computer users? I expect that I'll need to make a trip to a US Cellular corporate store.

The download on US Cellular's site looks to only support Windows 7, Vista, or XP service pack 2.

Looks like you may have to make that trip.

I just finished flashing my Acclaim. It was a fairly simple process. Couple battery pulls, put the phone into download mode, plug/unplug the usb cable a couple times and it's done.

All my Apps, contacts, etc. were reloaded automatically after the flash. Wallpaper stayed the same too, but my widget setup on my home screens needed to get resetup. Probably due to going from 3 home screens to now 5!

I'm in the process of moving my apps to the SD card right now to free up some space on the phone. I'm happy to see Myspace, Twidroid, Facebook, and The Weather Channel preloaded apps removed!

I have no use for apps like these either. Were you able to remove them because of the update? How did that work?

They were automatically removed as a result of the update.

And I should add that my Acclaim is a lot less laggy than it used to be after flashing to Froyo. I was also able to gain back a massive amount of internal phone storage moving apps to the SD card. The phone in general seems a lot less glitchy than before so i'm pretty happy so far with the update!

I really like 2.2 . Some of the differences I have noticed are:

-They seem to have fixed the random search function
-5 home screens instead of 3
-phone, browser, and all apps buttons added to the bottom of each home screen
-the alarm clock app is now built into the clock and you can have more than 3 alarms
-several of the useless preloaded apps were removed but some of them are still there
-the app to sd card function is nice but it only works on downloaded apps, not the preloaded ones.
-Seems to run smoother and less glitchy
-we can now rotate our phones to the right, the screen will auto rotate to the right and left. But not upside down

I was also wondering if somebody that still had 2.1 could download the Quadrant Standard benchmark app and run it to see if there is any performance difference or not. I have ran the benchmark several times on my phone and im consistently getting 279-281. Just wondering what the difference is if any at all.

Default Problem with downloading Froyo...

I can't get my Froyo update to finish...and I don't have a Mac

But I save the file to my desktop, launch the program, pull and put back in the battery, etc. Basically, I do all the steps from Samsung's website (How Do I Update The Software On My US Cellular SCH-R880 (Acclaim) Phone To Android 2.2 Froyo DL25 Build?)

However, the step where I click "Start Software Download," the progress bar just stays at 0% and doesn't load. Nothing happens, and my USB connection and everything seems fine.

Any suggestions of what I can do or change?

Default Camera

How does the camera seem to do now?? I remember waiting forever for my camera to come up once I hit the icon. That is a main reason I let it sit on the shelf the past few months. Does it seem faster??

Sorry, updated already, but my score was only 276. That said, I have Lookout Security installed and wonder if it is possibly a bottleneck. Just for comparison, I ran this on my stock 2.1 Mesmerize and its score was 895.

@troysfon: My camera opens fairly quick with Froyo, quicker than I recall under Eclair.

Off the top of my head, I would try rebooting your PC and performing a battery pull on your phone, both to dump memory, then try again.

If this does not fix the problem, check out your anti-virus software and firewall as possible cuprits.

Default 2.2 message notifications

does anyone know why the notication for messages goes away if you just go to the message home screen instead of actually looking at messages?

for example getting two messages from two different people and only checking one of them. On 2.1 it would keep a notification there for messages that haven't been read yet. Is there anyway to do that with 2.2 and the Acclaim?

thanks so much!!

Ran it before the update. Had a low score of 184 and a high of 222 with an average of 207. After the update was getting around 270. Phone seems to run a lot smoother now. Had a buddy with an Evo run the test, and got a 1198. No wonder he's always on the damn thing, it's fast as lightning!

Hey guys,

I was thinking about a Samsung Acclaim but I have heard a lot of bad things about it freezing and etc. I wanted to know, have these problems been fixed in the Android 2.2 release? I'm new to smart phones. Thanks!

Since installing 2.2 I have had no issues with the phone locking up, I never really had problems before though. That also goes for the other people I know that have the Acclaim and did have lock up issues. 2.2 seems to have done nothing but good. There are a couple little quirks out there that need to be fixed but nothing that seems major to me.

The Acclaim is a low end Android phone. There are better options out there but the Acclaim's price is tough to beat. So if you don't have the money to spend on a more expensive phone but still want a very functional phone that will do most productivity/office type stuff without any issue then this is your phone. My best suggestion would be to go into the store and handle all of the phones you are considering. This will help you identify the little details that matter to you in a phone.

However, the phone is still lacking flash support and probably won't get it. It also struggles with or doesn't run more resource intensive games that would normally run on another handset. I don't play a lot of games on my phone so not really a big deal to me.

Some of my favorite apps on the phone that I use all of the time that work great are: AudioGalaxy, Dish Network Dish Anywhere, Pandora, ScoreTracker, Google Voice for Voicemail, Youtube, and I used to use Last.fm until they decided they wanted to make mobile users pay for their service. Tons more apps out there that work great on the Acclaim but those are the ones I use all the time.

Hopefully that gives you a good overview of what the phone can and can't do.

Thanks Sammy! What do you think about the battery life of the phone? Also, is the call quality good? You think that the freezing and locking up problem has been fixed by Version 2.2?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just don't want to be locked into a phone for the next year that I hate!

Battery life is not bad, its an Android device, so it sucks compared to regular phones. The call quality has never been an issue for me. 2.2 made the phone run a lot better. The guys over at SDX have a lot of options for rooting and making the phone even better. I have used Launcher Pro instead of the stock launcher and havent had any of the issues other have had, maybe just good luck but both of my acclaims dont have all those issues. I have heard others have rid their phones of issues after using a different launcher. If you can, I would go with a better phone, but if you cant, this phone should be a good starter Android. I cant wait til the next lineup of phones comes out... Should make the Desire and Mesmerize look like toys

I have a Samsung Acclaim, and I was just wondering if anyone else's center button on the front of the phone (right under the Samsung logo) doesn't work after loading 2.2? Both my daughter and I loaded it, and our buttons were working before we loaded it, and now it only works intermittently. US Cellular seems to think it's my phone, but why would both of our phones be affected after the download, and not just one? They want me to tkae it to a service center to havbe it looked at, but I'm not sure it's woth the 20 mile trip just for that.. everything else is ok!

If you are talking about the button waking the phone..... It will wake the phone if there is an open app or if the phone is charging. There may be a couple other scenarios where it will wake the phone. When the phone is not charging and locked, the power button and sliding the keyboard out, are the only ways to unlock. I like it better since its much more difficult to unlock in your pocket now. If you are saying that it doesnt work when you try to use it with the phone on, then you may want to get it looked at.
