Yep, another limitation of the supposedly intuitive Twiz interface. Instead of going into the settings from hitting the menu button, hit the applications button and scroll down to Settings i has an icon with 2 gears one yellow one white. It's one of those Behold preinstalled things so it should stand out. Once in there there's a whole new menu of rather redundant settings beginning with Widgets and if scroll to the bottom you'll end with Software update. It really isn't obvious at all, and I had to so some searching for it. I've had the phone for 2 months, and I just figured this out 2 weeks ago.

It's not really installing anything when you root, and nothing changes in the usage of your phone. You are only gaining a higher permission level when you root. I'm not completely competent with linux/android but I found the rooting process harmless and removing apks has made my device so much better!

Hey Chad, the only real downside to rooting is the loss of the Samsung software for the camera right? If that's the case, that isn't too big of a deal. You still have a 5mp camera with the option of installing other camera software right?

I might consider rooting at least until we get 2.x just for the speed and ability to ditch some boggware. I can still use Open Home with my Dark Hero skin on a rooted BH2 right?

No, no, no. Rooting and using a custom rom are two separate processes. Rooting is just getting a higher level of permission on your phone, which I used to remove the apps that I did not use (which gave me better speed, battery life, and better & more apps). You don't lose any applications or functions at all, and is very low risk (unless you go crazy deleting apps).

To install a custom rom, you first have to root. But when you put one of the current roms on your phone, you do lose the vib and samsung camera software.

Okay I gotcha. Well I think I'm going to do that. So essentially, the phone is the same, just faster without all of the Samsung crap they preload on the phone. I like that idea. It's like building your own computer with an OEM copy of Windows as opposed to buying an HP with all of HP's preloaded crap.

Gonna start the root process. Any threads on these forums that are better than others? I'm not interested in roms, I just want to get to the stock 1.5.

Here are the lines I grabbed from one of the threads, you need to get the try3 file and put it on your SD card. Then type each line and hit enter (first line is at DOS prompt)

adb shell

cat /sdcard/try3 > /data/local/try3
chmod 777 /data/local/try3
/data/local/try3 /system/bin/sh

I don't think this is persistent, you might have to redo the steps each time you want to take advantage of root (it takes about 3 seconds to do). I've done it 2 or 3 times to remove the junk. There is a whole thread on what people have removed, try searching for telnav or diner dash to find it.

Check out BH_MAN's stripped BH2 Stock Rom. He has the vibration and camera working in that one. No vibration was always a dealbreaker for me too.

i dont understand a word of that. whats adb shell? do i have to boot my phone up while plugged in to the computer? What programs do i need and such?

I see a few threads on rooting and roms but i dont know what specifics i need. i would pretty much just like to root my phone so i can delete bogus apps and run root only programs. and eventually save android market apps to sd as well.

Does let Root be used Via adb shell, However... This does not let Root for app's work..

I Posted a How-to here regarding this

Default root/rom

Spiz, just to be clear, getting root access does not change anything...it merely give you the ability to change things. You can't get "stock" 1.5 on a behold 2 without installing a custom ROM.

The problem w/ telenav, diner dash, etc is that you don't have permission to remove them as a regular user. Getting root access merely gives you permission.

OK, I have my update, but it says I have insufficient battery power to install, so I have to charge it first. Tried plugging charger in and doing it, but it will not allow. So I guess I have to wait. I've had the phone for 4 weeks this coming Sunday and I haven't really done a lot to it yet after reading the forums and that the update was coming.

Will post when I get it charged and updated!

@PPPHHHTTT - If you can check your SD card and look for a zip file that might be able to be leveraged by the rest of us.

OK, warning...this is my 1st droid phone=NEWBIE big time. So clueless to some of what you are asking.

KKARLIN - zip file-I do not see one on my SD card. I'm looking in the files folder and ...nada. I know this is my card because I transferred it from my last phone and it has all my old pics and folders and whatnot.

2FR35H - imei number...huh? tell me where to look.

there is now a "about phone" under settings. this lists: legal info; system tutorial; model number; firmware version; baseband version; kernel version; build number.

new: Evernote (? elephant head for logo-didn't see this before-has login and sign up); Midnight Bowling 2; Where's Waldo?

Nothing else is immediately obvious to me. This is gotta suck...someone posts bout the fixes and they have no clue what's going on...hahahaha! Sorry, that's why I'm here-to learn!

well, i'm glad you asked. battery performance for me is much improved with heavy and i mean heavy use (gps, bluetooth [which now works flawlessly], web, music, and video all throughout the day and i have no problem lasting till i go to sleep. no more mid-day charging! multiple days is totally out of the question, though. getting about 12-14 hrs. the best improvement besides battery is the proximity sensor, it actually works well now. there is now very little to no delay when moving the phone away from your face when on a call. the screen turns right back on and i really love that.

btw no zip file on my card either, and i've asked other people i know with it and they don't either. kinda strange, maybe samsung had more dirty tricks, and added away to automatically delete the file once installed or it saves somewhere on internal memory. idk

Yo I got the update a couple of hours ago. yay! They replaced the shiny android boot screen with a much nicer anti-alised pulsing samsung logo. Some changes in the menu like said. I'm going to retrain the battery and see how things go from there.

Thank you guys for filling us in on the update; anybody want to share IMEI #'s so we can see if they are getting pushed in that order? Also, what kind of notification did you get when it came? Thanks!

I wonder if T-Mobile will send the updates last to the people who won the phone, since the imei shows up on their system as not being originally bought with them.

It would be nice to know how they're doing it, not that it will arrive any faster. And I got mine from Amazon last month, so if you're right I'm probably at the end of the line... Love how excited we all are for a minor bug-fix!

For those who received it.. did it just pop up saying there was an update? or did you have to actually go into settings and have the phone check for an update?

HaHa! Sorry, Behold_this. I had to give you crap over something else beside you reporting you had the upgrade...I'm a little 'off' like that. ;-)

Again- IMEI?? Huh?

I went to use my phone and there it was...my notification. It said something like your phone has been sent the new upgrade...click to install..your battery is too low please charge...and there was an option to delay the install by 1, 2, 4 etc hours or the next day. I plugged in...waited an hour and hit upgrade or next or whatever. Hone was down bout 10 minutes and voila! Here I am with all of you hanging onto my every word. ;-)

I do know one thing...typing is seriously slow now. Will figure out what that is about.

It's in Settings>About phone>Status; not sure what "IMEI" stands for (I'm sure someone on here does!) but it's basically the serial # for the phone. There is/was some speculation that they might be pushing the update out in that order... And I'm just anxious!

I posted this earlier in the thread:

"btw no zip file on my card either, and i've asked other people i know with it and they don't either. kinda strange, maybe samsung had more dirty tricks, and added away to automatically delete the file once installed or it saves somewhere on internal memory. idk"

that was a response to her saying she had no zip on sd card.

If anyone can tell me WHERE to find the IMEI..I will look it up and tell you.

ChadMD23 - there is no zip file on the SD when the update is done...sorrry.

I went to my task manager and shut off a bunch of stuff that started back after the fix and my qwerty is flying again. Forgot to check after...oops!

Bugdog - there is no 'status' under phone settings. Is this changed since the fix?

The *#06# worked.

Thanks! Can anyone make sense of a sequence? Mine is the same thru the 03, ending 0353418 02. Of course we're probably barking up the wrong tree, but whatever.

Ah, I see - I have GDE home, which has the stock Android menus instead of Samsung's version.
