I tried everything on this post to hook my phone to windows xp 32 and vista 32 (yes i'm still using vista). It all failed until I actually put a microSD card in the phone. I was thinking that the hd space would show up, but nope. after adding the microSD card the sd folder shows up along with the phones hd space. that is a little weird in my opinion.
steps
down loaded and installed usb drivers
phone home screen, settings ->applications -> USB -> select: mass storage device
hooked phone to computer with usb cable
phone home screen. pull down top menu. select USB -> mount phone
computer should prompt you about new storage device
I installed the drivers. USB Settings are mass storage and debugging off. Half of the time when I connect it my computer says "device not recognized." The other half of the time my computer wont react. If it doesnt react I try mounting the sd card but that still doesnt work. Anyone having similar issues?
edit - I just restarted the phone and now it is connecting. very strange.
edit 2 - Now its not working again. ugh. Time to reinstall drivers I guess
edit 3 - After uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers now I can not get the phone to connect. This is not fun. Should not be this difficult

So, i uninstalled the driver and did a system restore just in case. I reinstalled the driver and it did not work. I decided to try again this morning and after sutting down, it worked.
Windows found it, set it up and WMP detected and started syncing. It will take a while to sync, there is like 13gb free space on it
Almost forgot the problem, my Synaptics touchpad driver and Google Desktop both stopped working, I do not know if related but I reinstalled both.
1) Installed USB Drivers
2) In phone, changed USB options to mass storage
3) Hook up phone via cable to computer
4) Computer recognized phone and created 2 new volumes
5) In the notifications area you have to select turn on USB Storage
Voila
Now to put my music files in my internal storage, just drag my mp3/mp4 files into the Music folder? Will it transfer album artwork that I have in iTunes?

My goal was to get PC internet to work on my Netbook Windows XP Home 32bit. Samsung Captivate drivers worked for Mass Storage, but not "PC internet" (Allows Phone to be Modem via a USB connection a.k.a. USB Tethering).
I just realized the funniest thing regarding having the phone show up on my Win7 32bit laptop. When I first got the phone on Friday I installed the driver posted on this sticky and was able to connect fine. I have not been able to connect since until I realized I've been running on LauncherPro. I tried switching back to TWLauncher and voila!!! My computer recognizes the phone again! I think everyone needs to make sure that they are using the default TW that samsung put in for the computer to recognize this phone.
I have tried both launcherpro and tw, and i still cant get my phone to connect with USB debugging on. Does anyone know why it wont connect with usb debugging on? The usb drivers are installed and it works when it debugging is off..
EDIT - Well, i got it to connect with USB debugging. I have no idea why but switching the usb cable from the front panel to a motherboard usb port did the trick.

I'm having the same problem. Works with mass storage mode & debugging off, but as soon as I turn on debugging, I get a "driver not installed" error (Win7 64). I tried to browse to the extracted driver folder, but I get a "Windows encountered a problem" error, specifically that, "The system cannot find the file specified.
If I try the generic Galaxy S driver, I get the same thing. I've got the USB cable plugged directly into the mobo.

I wonder if it's the difference between a USB1.0 and USB2.0 connection? Mine worked the first time, using the Galaxy-S drivers and my front USB port.
Well hallelujah, it worked. I ran the uninstaller for the Samsung drivers, then the uninstaller for the Captivate drivers, then I downloaded the drivers from the Softpedia link you posted. Then I rebooted, & one of the drivers installed (device still had the exclamation point). So then I had to manually go in & install the drivers for the other 2 components (ADB interface & USB modem). Finally showing up & working in the sideload wonder machine.

My iphone 3gs was stolen yesterday. I ordered a new Samsung Captivate with AT&T. I have been looking around online and Samsung says that the software that comes with the phone is not compatible with MAC computers and their OS system. Does anybody know anything about this or a work around?
just got my captivate today. i doenloaded drivers from samsung's wesites, and set usb mode to media player, and an icon popped right up. i can now search thru both my SD card and internal memory.

switching the cable to the back of the mobo fixed the problem for me too thanks
I have tried every option that you guys have stated. Front, Back, Drivers, Download from Samsung, Canada etc. Can get it as mass storage but no Kies. Can anyone use kies?
Please Help

I'm having a similar issue; I can't install "Samsung Android USB Modem" drivers. I tried to follow your steps though as far as I can tell there is no uninstaller .exe with the Samsung drivers unless I'm missing something.
I've tried a ton of times to install manually and automatically the "Samsung Android USB Modem" driver, but it keeps failing (the required section in the "inf" file isn't there it says) even after I point it to the folder with all the Captivate drivers. I also tried the Samsung driver executable linked from Softpedia in the USB drivers thread. This is also annoying because every time I reconnect the phone I get a prompt to install USB modem drivers.
Googling for this has had no luck. The only clue is that the driver package from Samsung has a setup.exe file which claims that the driver was successfully installed.
Anyone else have issues or solutions for getting the USB modem driver installed? I have a super stripped down XP build so that could be a factor, but I never have problems with drivers really. FWIW, the ADB and composite drivers install w/o issue.
I was having one heck ofr a time with the USB connection. When I tried to use the "Samsung KIES" I would get the USB message "searching preconfigured drive folders". It would just stay in that spot and go no where. So I deleted the Samsung USB drivers from the control panel "Programs and Features". I rebooted and the same thing. Than I switched from "Samsung KIES" to "Mass Storage" and the USB connection was successful! They show up in "My Computer" as drives "M&N" where M=7.39GB FREE (The M drive is my 8GB microSD card) and N=13.4GB FREE, SUCCESS!!!! HURRAY!!!
OK, so now I have that, b ut how do I bring my Outlook contacts over to the Captivate?
By the way, I am using Vista Premium 64-Bit.....
***NOTE: By the way, I forgot this URGENT step. You need to MOUNT the USB driver through the drop down Notification screen!! MUST DO THIS!

Spent about an entire day trying to get everything working. I know have it to where I simply connect my phone to my computer.......Kies auto starts and I'm off to the races. I had to download/install the USB Drivers and Kies, both from the Samsung website. Is there any reason my yahoo email accounts stop working when WiFi is used?
Question, what function does "KIES" fulfill? I initially thought it would handle the Outlook files and the iTunes musica and video, but now I just don't know. Also, what does the function "searching preconfigured drive folders" mean?
At my wit's end trying to get Windows7 Pro 64bit to recognize the Captivate either as a hard drive or media player (or anything). Get the "USB Device not recognized" every single time.
Works as a storage device on XP laptop but not in media player mode other wise I could work around it. Tried the drivers from Samsung & also for the Galaxy S - uninstalling all drivers and reinstalling each time, then restarting both phone & computer & also unplugging the PSU connections to the motherboard which I read worked sometimes on some other forums.
Even went and got a PCI-USB expansion card and same result. Don't really know what to do now besides reinstall Win7 which I really really don't wanna do. Wish there was some way to connect it in media player mode over bluetooth.
K so for some reason now it works...I clicked around for hours and I think this is what I did:
After installing the 64bit drivers and also the ones from the samsung page, put the device in storage mode and connected it.
When the message for USB device not recognized appeared I went to device manager and manually updated the driver...pointing it in turn at each folder in the 64bit driver install until I got to one that managed to not give an error 43...was able to get the card & phone storage to show as drives in my computer.
Switched to Media player mode and had same problem...turned off phone & restarted computer and now works. So confused.
When you install the USB drivers from the first post, be sure to "install from a specific location" 2-3 times as your computer finds more and more devices to install. If you choose "search and download automatically", you end up installing sucky versions of drivers. So each time windows finds a new android device or new samsung device (it will do this 2-3 times), choose the file that you first downloaded and installed manually.
maybe this has been beaten to death, but here is my experience so far:
WinXP 32-bit SP3
-first I tried installing the Captivate driver, but while unpacking the .zip (using winrar 3.93) I get this error message:
! F:\Tech Stuff\Samsung Captivate\SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2.zip: CRC failed in amd64\WdfCoInstaller01005.dll. The file is corrupt
! F:\Tech Stuff\Samsung Captivate\SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2.zip: CRC failed in i386\ssadadb.sys. The file is corrupt
! F:\Tech Stuff\Samsung Captivate\SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2.zip: CRC failed in i386\WdfCoInstaller01005.dll. The file is corrupt
-next I try the x86 Galaxy S driver link, the .exe file, and that installs fine.
-have "Mass Storage" selected under USB settings on the phone
-connect phone to computer
-on the phone, a USB icon appears on the top left part of the screen
**on the phone (this is the part I was confused with people stating that you needed to choose "Mount", from reading through this thread the comments made it sound like the notifications would appear on the Computer, not the Phone, and on the Computer was where you were supposed to choose "Mount", not the case apparently, oops!);
1) I slide down the top menu on the phone
2) click on the item that says "USB Connected"
3) a pop-up window on the phone will appear, chose "Mount"
from other comments I read, someone mentioned that the front USB port on their computer would not let them mount the phone. I am able to mount it on the front and rear USB ports.
at work I use Win7 64-bit. The interesting thing there is I was able to download and unpack the .zip file (again winrar 3.93) for the Captivate, and I did not receive a corrupted files dialogue. Now that I can do it on my home computer I will see what happens at work.
***Win7 Pro 64-bit update
Works fine on front and rear USB ports. It is odd though that the Captivate driver could unzip without being corrupted on this machine, while on my XP machine the corrupted file dialog appeared

Just installed it on my Dell M90 running 32-bit Win 7. A little "couldn't find the file" that I skipped through and all worked well anyway's... I'm not rooted either.
I'm finally free of my iPhone!!! This is a nice little piece of kit, and now that I can tether... really useful when I travel.
... sent via the tether on my AT&crappyT Captivate. Thanks AndroidForums!
I've had the phone a couple weeks now and have been having issues with connecting to my Windows 7 64 PC. I finally got it work using the Galaxy S 64 drivers and by plugging into the back of my PC instead of the front ports (not sure why this makes any difference, but it did). Was finally able to sideload scummvm (only to find that it doesn't work ).

Now if only the GPS worked...
Thanks! I have been trying to make my phone work for weeks and this does make difference!
yesterday I downloaded new kies from samsung UK site. I tried it still did not work. However when I connected to motherboard USB port, bam! it worked fine. I tried this one 2 different computers. They both have win 7 64.(win 7 32bit: any usb port will work for some reason)
With new kies, you do not need any separate drivers. I uninstalled all my drivers and installed new kies and it has newest drivers built in.
Now with Kies, I can finally manage my phone from PC.
Again thanks for your help! I can now finally enjoy my phone!
Did it this morning on the way to work, so I did not spend much time with it. However once connected and on Captivate, mounted in USB mode. Two new disk drives showed up in Linux Mint, titled 16 Gig volume and 2GB volume.
The 2GB volume was the SD card and I was able to open documents and pictures from the SD card with no driver issues whatsoever.
Two Linux based devices talking to each other with no problems, - who knew?
did you try going to application in settings, usb settings and change to mass storage mode, then try connecting the phone, then it should recognize it, then on phone slide down tray and hit mount.
My goal was to get PC internet to work on my Netbook Windows XP Home 32bit. Samsung Captivate drivers worked for Mass Storage, but not "PC internet" (Allows Phone to be Modem via a USB connection a.k.a. USB Tethering).
when I go to those sites, I just get spam to download some $30 driver program! Caution, there aren't actually any drivers here! of course, at my age, I could just be blind, there's tons of hyperlinks on the page.
Can anyone tell me where to find the actual drivers? I can't get any of this to work on windows Vista.

aight, bad news people... I've tried just about everything and can't get it to work
Things I've tried:
- Just about every USB Mode (Kies, Mass Storage+Mount, Media Player, PC Internet)
- USB Mode + Debugging
- Downloading and installing all of the drivers that have been posted thus far and from the Samsung website
- Plugging in to all USB ports, on four different computers (all 32 bit, XP and 7)
I'm seriously out of ideas... except for one more: uninstalling the device from the Device Manager list of hardware, but i don't know which one it is???
any help would be greatly appreciated. this is my first Android phone, and it has not been a smooth ride so far :'( Before this problem, I had LOTS of problems with basic features like Gmail and Contacts crashing all the F-ing time @_@ I wanted to love Android so much, but my patience is really wearing thin. and then there's the whole Apple is becoming more and more evil by the day thing... what am i going to dooooo ahhhhhhhhhh

I finally found the Galaxy drivers, and installed them. In order to get it to work I had to remove the external SD card. After that, the drivers installed and I was able to connect to the PC. I reinstalled the SD card, and was able to mount both the external and internal cards to the PC. I was able to tether as well. Try removing your external card.

That's very interesting... I haven't tried that yet, most due to my lack of an external microSD... Do you think it's worth buying a card to try? (my frugality also means I have to order it online, and not buy one from a store haha)
I've spent a good chunk of today searching around for answers, and kept reading the same tips over and over sigh

Kies worked for one day for me on Windows Vista. Now, the program nor the computer even recognizes the USB cable when plugged in. I tried another cable and even plugging it in on the older computer running XP (no drivers or anything) and nothing pops up. Its like they are "Dead Cables". But, you and I know better. I've simply given it up...Comeon Samsung the phone seems to be fine. Give us a little better support. Particularly for folks like me that don't have a clue and our grandkids live 10 hours away....
It looks like the drivers provided for 64-bit worked for me, but I had to go to device manager and manually point to the folder labelled 16_shrewsbury
This is what I had to do as well. After a nightmare of a time trying to get Windows to even recognize the phone I still had a problem of the the connection just dying after a few minutes. So basically useless for transferring music. I use Rhapsody and I fixed this by disconnecting the SD card so the program could only see the internal memory which seems to be working ok.
Samsung informed me that no one has plans to publish 64-bit drivers for Windows 7. That is, they couldn't "speculate as to when/if that would happen." I responded that there's an awful lot of 64-bitness out there right now, and they'd do well to address the issue.

My experience: Using windows xp
-connected as mass storage...installed fine to my laptop..created 2 storage drives, but when clicking on the drives I get the message "connect usb drive".
-I then tried to connect as "kies"..it connects and now I can see the phone so I can drag and drop.
Who knows...glad it connected tho, as it's a useless thing without being able to connect to a PC
OMG I love you finally I can plug my stupid phone in and lo my pc will flipping recognize it! Yay! Searched Samsung's website and could not find this. Idky they made it so hard to find the driver's for this phone, but after what feels like years of searching I've finally found them. I am indebted to you sir... or ma'am.

Sounds like you forgot to mount it after connecting the cable.
