I never have gotten side loading working through one-click. If my phone is rooted and AT&T tries to push the update, will I just miss it? Or can I unroot and still pick it up? Not quite sure how these "silent" upgrades work.

fyi--if you haven't got the update, you'll get the following message when trying to install a non Market app:

"Install blocked
For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market".

Otherwise it just goes through the install without any problems. Did anyone actually get a confirmation message install was successful?

You click on "enable 3rd party apps" and what happens? super one click 1.7 enabled 3rd party apps for me a few months back with no problems at all. I just remember that you have to reboot after rooting..then use it to enable 3rd party apps

I still get that install blocked message. However, these are old .apk's I had already downloaded to my SD card in the past. Do you have to download fresh ones or something?

I have the Samsung Captivate, which I updated to 2.2, and in truth, our problem, is with AT&T. Our Captivate, is one of the first phones, to get the "so-called OTA" pushed to it, to make it work. This is since May 16 this year, and as of today, May 28, is still don't. I've spoke for hours with different level AT&T techs, sent emails that don't get the right answer, and even drove over 60 miles, to have a face-to-face, with them, at a store they have. My results, is A WASTE OF TIME. Until YESTERDAY, the same tech was calling me, and he admitted, he knew NOTHING ABOUT THE OTA ISSUE. He oushed me the OTA while we were talking, or rather, he pushed me, SOMETHING. Where I live, their twoers SUCK, but he claimed, the OTA, HAD TO COME THROUGH THEIR TOWER NETWORK. Something was sent me, because I saw the activity happen, but afterwards, I still got the INSTALL BLOCKED message we all get. He said he'd push harder, and would call me back this coming Tuesday, but he transferred me to a SPECIAL TECH PERSON, for her to try and solve. Solve? She did what the majority of them do, pushes you to someone else to FIX, since they don't know how. Her FIX, was to dump me on a rep, from Samsung, who after I spoke to him, said the OTA PUSH, was an issue with AT&T, NOT WITH SAMSUNG. But he did say, what all the claims seem to say, is wrong, that the UNKNOWN SOURCE in settings, has to be checked, or activated. However, this Samsung tech, said the UNKNOWN SOURCE, is not AVAILABLE, AND NEVER HAS BEEN, ON THE CAPTIVATE. So, again, another push off, was worthless, PLUS the woman AT&T EXPERT, split the scene. So, after 12 days of AT&T CLAIMING TO PUSH A FIX, OTA, TO US, for me, it simply hasn't worked. Is it necessary to push it to us with their towers, and not WIFI? I don't know, but both ways were tried with me. My phone is NOT ROOTED, and the OTA, is supposed to be ONLY FOR THE ANDROID 2.2. or Froyo VERSION, NOT THE 2.1. bUT IN TRUTH, AT&T SCREWED US, AND THEMSELVES, FROM ALLOWING SIDE-LOADING APPS, and Amazon offering their own app store, is what is making this decision, blow up on them, and us. I still can't side load, away from MARKET apps, and I'd very much like it, if someone that CAN, tells us how they got it to work.

I don't know that you could say it is a systematic AT&T issue since many of us have it. I'm not sure what the difference is why some people have it and others do not, but I didn't have to do anything to get it to work, and it works now (but did not a few weeks ago).

Maybe you have it, but how did you get it? I've read that many, like me, don't have it, even if they got the OTA, like me. After two weeks of talking to many techs, I don't even get a claim, that it's an AT&T issue. They push me to Amazon, since it's their app that won't install, and to Samsung, saying it's their problem. But both say,it'd not their issue, but AT&T's, and from all I'm getting, tech support don't even know the OTA is being offered. If it's not an AT&T issue, then who's is it? Did you have to do anything yourself, to get the BLOCKING, removed, or did it simply, quit BLOCKING? I don't understand how this is working out, and if you do, then PLEASE, explain it to me. Thanks.

It's so easy and simple to root and enable 3rd party apps I'm surprised people are knocking their heads against the wall for this

First I am speaking for myself and not any corporation. The update is a silent one. There is a system push that is opening up the Inspire, Aria and Captivate. Unfortunately on the Captivate there is no setting or checkmark to tell it has been done. The only way you can tell, is to try and download and install a third party app like the Amazon Market.

If at this late date you still cannot install the third party app, call AT&T and ask technical support to push it to you. They can do this instantly. They use a system push and update your phone via the IMEI and telephone # with a system called XDM . Hope that helps.

At&t sent me a configuration message and told me to go to the link and it would download the update but when I press the link it tells me authentication failed... Can they send it some other way or is that the only way? Because they have sent it to me like 5 times and it still doesn't work... any suggestions on this issue?

Call customer care and have them push it without a link

Default Amazon App Store

I got tired of waiting on AT&T to push out the sideloading. I called customer care last night. The first agent I got really had no clue to what was going on but she transferred me to a much more knowledgeable tech who pushed out the update very quickly. I was able to immediately load the amazon app store. My advice is to call them, be patient but do not give up.

I just called customer support and they are having technical issues at this time with the instant update, but they I should have it sometime next week. I spoke with a guy named Dell and he knew exactly what I was talking about so at least I got someone who knew what I was talking about.

Thank you NJR for your post. It was not only informative, but directly useful for me when dealing with ATT! I mentioned some sentences from your 29 May 0607 post while I was on the phone with ATT tech support trying to get the HTC (Aria) push for side loading apps. . . The Tech person had been confused and really did not see a way to help me . . . and had no solutions. . .he seemed to me to be patiently waiting for me to finish "venting and asking" to wrap up the call. However, when I mentioned that ATT does "use a system push and update your phone via the IMEI and telephone # with a system called XDM," the tech respond positively. He asked me to repeat that and then claimed that he had heard of the program, but he personally did not have permissions for it since he did not use it, but he then put me on hold (again) and finally switched me to a tech who did have permissions for the program. She (the new tech) was completely aware of what I wanted and how to get it to me --with very little fanfare or delay, she pushed the OTA update directly to my phone and within ten minutes (rebooting twice) my HTC Aria had the "unknown sources" option and could side load apps. [It only took three calls and two emails to att --but it finally worked. . !]
So, I think there was something in your post, NJR, that made sense to the tech and convinced him to go further! Thank you again for sharing the info and help me (& I hope others!)

As of now I still don't have the side loading update.. I've watched it be pushed to me and when it starts my device manager crashes and kills it off or it pushes and i get a configuration message that im supposed to be able to install and when i press it i get authentication failed and it won't do anything.. could it be my version of froyo uj16 that is causing the problems? because i don't know what is wrong and at&t tries to push me off on samsung and samsung does nothing but push me back to at&t...

I joined just to post this, I just called AT&T and spoke with Tech Support. They pushed the update right then and stayed on the phone with me to make sure it was working. If you still haven't recieved this update, just call them. The tech support guy said my phone was showing that it had been updated already. He said it could have gotten interupted. So just give them a call and they will get you set up

For those of you whom successfully got some tech at ATT to install it for you what is your BASEBAND version.

Cause I just spoke with someone and he asked for my BASEBAND version which is I897UCKB1 and he told me thats the latest version I have. No updates available and I still dont have the "unknown sources" option. No help at all they were I am really tempted just to root this phone.

Rooting is only the easy way to enable sideloafing. But you have the latest firmware, you need the update that enables sideloading

My baseband is I897UCKB1 as well. The update should have nothing to do with the baseband at all though. The captivate will not have the unknown sources option, it just starts working. You may need to get past the initial person who answers and get to a real tech person. Just keep telling them yu need them to push you the sideloading update. If that person dosn't know what you are talikng about ask for someone else. I had to get through the customer service rep and have them transfer me to tech support. The guy I got knew exactly what I was talking about.

Thanks for all your help guys I got it working!!!! ATT on the phone was no help. So I had to root my Captivate then still no option to install non-market apps. I then did alot of reading and followed this link here (Tip: Enable Non Market App Installs on the Samsung Captivate) and did the FF option and changed the permission settings. And BAM I can install now. Just installed Amazon app store

Has anyone had any success downloading the new version of Grooveshark (not available via the Android Marketo or Amazon) to the Captivate?

I called AT&T support and had them send the update OTA (no idea whether I have it or not, but assuming so) but when I try to install/upgrade the latest version of Grooveshark, a file I downloaded a month ago from the Grooveshark site, I get the error message: "Install blocked. For security, your phone is to block installations of applications not obtained from Android Market."

Anyone have any tips?

FINALLY got the stupid sideloading update today.

Just randomly went to install the amazon app store .apk in my downloads folder for the millionth time, and it actually worked! I'm half amazed.

I was meaning to get them to push it to me and all that, but had not gotten round to it.

Now I feel like all I need to worry about is gingerbread lol

I've spoken to three AT&T tech within the last two days. The first time the update was pushed, I know it fail. So I talked to two more techs today and they pushed the update and both told me that I will receive a confirmation message with instructions within 24 hours. Was anyone else told this and if so what were the instructions? How long after the update was pushed were you able to sideload applications?

I used AT&T Chat this evening and so far the push hasn't worked. They told me it may take 24 hours.

I really wanted today's free app from Amazon - Folder Organizer. Had been using the Lite version and was going to purchase the full version when I noticed if was free today. I ended up using Android Injector and was able to download and install using that software. No rooting involved.

I gave up asking AT&T. I'm giving them until the end of the year to come through.

Here is a simple self-help method by using SuperOneClick
[APP]SuperOneClick v2.1.1 (Finally fixed!) - xda-developers

0. Install SuperOneClick on PC ( I use version 1.95, not version 2.11
1. One click at SuperOneClick menu for rooting the phone
2. One click at SuperOneClick menu for setting up non-market apps installation permission
3. One click for unrooting the phone if you would like to switch back to unrooted sitution.

It needs the super user mode to setup the non-market apps installation permission No matter it is from ATT over the air. This method is easier, and there will be no unknown source check box and just setup the permission internally in the Android as your waiting ATT method.

As long as one is playing the victim. It will always going to be someone else's fault. Anger fixes nothing. A positive open minded approach works wonders. Choosing to drive to a retail store where their only responsibility is selling is the reason they could not help.

I've been with AT&T, using Android, iOS, Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile & feature phones. In over a decade I've received early upgrades annually as a courtesy, excellent technical support, and very good pricing. All of that, and I'm nothing more than a regular customer.

I'm so impressed and happy with AT&T I have suggested them to friends & family for years.

Currently just in my immediate family we have eight terrific Captivates. Currently we've all enjoyed AT&T's easy upgrade process from 2.1 to 2.2

I am so sorry to hear of your misfortune.

As a side note, I also use Verizon so I may enjoy the Motorola Droid line. I have equally good things to say about Verizon as well.*After precisely 12 yrs with AT&T, and 5 yrs with Verizon, I've enjoyed the best they both have to offer.*Yet that said, I'm sure part of my great satisfaction is due to the fact that I don't expect anything unrealistic. Nor do I believe in entitlement for free.*I sincerely hope your luck improves.

I went and got a Nexus S and they're free today at BestBuy by the way with an upgrade or new 2 year agreement. Amazon works perfectly. The pure Android experience is where I'm going and staying from now on. F At&t and their erratic updates.

Also, thanks for the help GPS.

Samsung is behind this push to get pure Android phones out into the marketplace in mass. It's a good move. It is true that nothing beats a pure Google Android phone.

Believe me, I'm NOT sticking up for AT&T! It's the carriers in general.

The simple facts are that most people only have one carrier, so they have nothing to compare against, other than what is written in forums. I have had both AT&T and Verizon as primary lines (no landline) as well as test periods at T-Mobile and Sprint and they are all about the same. Personally I despise how all carriers run their businesses, but it is what it is. To make one the Villian is to lack the knowledge to fairly evaluate.

Yes, yes, I know there has been an totally unacceptable wait period for updates for AT&T's Android phones. However that's because there is a breakdown, in communication that is both parties fault. Samsung and AT&T. Samsung made a deal in the beginning that they would sell Android phones to AT&T, then give the updates for free. Once the deal was done, business was underway, then as the updates migrated from Google To Samsung, they added the AT&T bloatware then _billed_ AT&T. NOT what was suppose to happen.

Therefore behind the scenes they were locked in battle as the consumer was left to wait and wonder. It's big business people. I don't like it either, but one must remember that AT&T has a far larger inventory of all phones and manufacturers to deal with, as well as all the politics that involves.

The only reason AT&T is so widely hated in many circles, is the sub-standard Qualcomm chips that Apple bought en mass for the first two generations of iPhones. (another fact that Apple kept "secret") I know. I would experience dropped calls like crazy. Then pickup my BlackBerry or BlackJack , both on AT&T, and have no trouble with calls at all. I travel over 80,000 miles per year all over the state and the iPhone is the only AT&T phone I've ever had a problem with.

That said, I will give Steve Jobs credit for being the best con man...Oops, Salesman in the business, since he has successfully pointed the finger at AT&T and CONvinced his fanboys that it's all AT&T's problem. Let's not forget he's also the one who proclaimed and advertised the iPad as "Magical & Revolutionary"... oh pleeeeeze!

On the data side, this complaint about AT&T is true, since they sold so many iPhones it would overwhelm any network. But to roundly bash them, so Apple didn't have to take ownership of their own problem, is rubbish.

At the end of the day I am carrier neutral and brand neutral. My only bias being Android. It's the Mobile OS I believe is the very best.

Phonefool once again you come true with the knowledge. I had a feeling Apple was very much involved in AT&T getting a bad rap and it sucks to be in midtown Manhattan a while back on my phone with full bars and cannot connect to a call.
You're so right because before that damn Iphone hit the network connections were very acceptable.
They seem to have done something lately since I can call and text these days without a hitch. *keeps fingers crossed*

I know this falls under the Samsung Captivate thread, but I feel the information I have is probably useful to all, so I'll post it all over the place. I upgraded my phone (HTC Aria) to Android 2.2 (Froyo), and then didn't have the ability to sideload, which made my backups pointless. I noticed in lots of forums that AT&T could send you a push and that would then give you that option of: Unkown sources - allow installation of non-market applications. However after nearly an hour and 4 different AT&T techs telling me that this wasn't possible, I finally found one that actually listened and was able to get it done. So, if you're having trouble with the techies, this is what I was told she did to get this corrected....

Ask them (AT&T tech support) to log into the XDM system, and under connection settings, they'll be able to find "HTC - allow unknown sources - true." Then they send that push to your phone. You restart your device, and voila. Simple, once you find the smartest cookie in the bunch.

Interesting, FWIW I've lost all sideloading capabilities with my phone, seems to have been when I did a factory reset a few months ago. Perhaps I'll try calling.

Okay I am going to throw in my two cents on this issue. I read numerous posts that said to just call AT&T tech. support and they could push me, OTA, the update to allow for the Amazon Market. I called first time and went through the motions but it will fail every time. Call about a week later talked to another tech. and same thing. They sent me a replacement phone. Now mind you both of these have Froyo on them. We tried again and same thing, frustrating. In doing research, I believe if this phone is not rooted you will NEVER receive this option nor get around it until those basterds at AT&T somehow tweak their software. I feel this will never happen because as seen in recent posted in the android community Samsung is done with this phone and I am sure AT&T is as well. I don't believe the other carrier restrict their customers to just one market, or am I wrong. Just like I wish they would remove their bloatware off of ALL phones! Ugh! Okay, that is just my two cents on this issue. Unless you root I say forget it.
Cheers

I did have sideloading for a while, Amazon app store was installed and I was able to sideload apps from elsewhere as well. My phone is not rooted, so it is definitely possible. As I said I lost all that with a factory reset.
