Confused Time to update 2.1, need help

Hey everyone, kinda new to the whole "Droid" scene, but I think it's about time to upgrade my OS to the latest available. I thought " no problem, find and download- simple", but I kinda ran into a wall and I fled to the forums for some help.

I have a Samsung Continuum and it is currently 2.1. Now, I have some fairly simple questions for you "techies"...

Is the Continuum a 'Galaxy S' phone?
Is 2.2 available for download? Can you link me to that?
Is 2.3 out for the Continuum, and can you link me to that?
Basic instruction or link to thread guiding how to properly update the OS.
And lastly, anything you could tell me to help me customize it for max performance?

Thanks, all!

The Continuum is a Galaxy S phone. Currently, there is no 2.2 or 2.3 build for it. When one is available it will come over the air (OTA) directly through Verizon. You are running the current software on your phone.

yes, if your phone had a more recent update it would have told you by ota notification. you cant just *upgrade* at will, unless there is a leaked file out there somewhere...and in that case you would have to be rooted most likely to take advantage of it.

as for *max* performance, in general the less widgets and apps syncing in the background the better off you are. you may find an alternate launcher such as adw or lpp or zeam more to efficient and faster...just remember dont have like 4 launchers in your system or it ll slow down even more.

if you root (and im not sure if there are odin recovery files for the continuum, and if not its risky) you can remove touchwiz and replace it with adw or another launcher in system/app (although this does break social networking sync)

galaxy s phones are laggy in general due to some poor software decisions by samsung, namely using the rfs file system (which was bonehead move of the year). rfs has terrible system write speeds (although is semi-decent read).

optimized kernels are really the only way around this and as of now i dont think any exist for the continuum. most of us in the galaxy s world (well the root community members looking for best possible performance anyway) run voodoo5 lagfix kernels that replace rfs with the more efficient ext4 file system, which is what the phone should have had in the first place

The Samsung Continuum is an incredibly unique Galaxy S phone, unlike any other smartphone you've seen. The screen is actually split up into 2 sections: a 3.4-inch touchscreen on top a 1.8-inch ticker screen just below it. Samsung has customized... Read More
