Default What are my options w/ this phone?

so like pretty much all of you i'm unhappy with my continuum. my biggest issue is that it's apparent it's going to be stuck on 2.1 forever, and i feel like if we were to get an update it would've been here by now.

i bought mine in june when i signed up for a new 2 year contract. what i want to know is, how many hoops is verizon gonna make me jump through in order to get a new phone? Since the push notification screen only works sporadically and the phone freezes every other day i'm pretty sure i could just return it since it's still under warranty, but i have no interest in getting a refurbished continuum in exchange. i want something new altogether, preferably something running 2.3 with the possibility of being updated to ICS in the next 6 months or so.

I've never returned a phone before, so can anyone with experience in dealing with verizon fill me in on what they're going to say and how bad they're going to try to screw me over? i just feel like they should cut us all a break, since they weren't upfront about the lack of support for this device at all.

The biggest thing that it will be dependant on is your history. If you are a customer in good standing that has been there for years, they might be more willing to work with you. That being said, persistence and letting them know that you are fully prepared to cancel over this (throwing out words like att might help) will help. Also, be prepared to talk to multiple people. It won't happen on the first try, and probably not the second or third. But keep bugging them. An easier alternative would simply get another phone via ebay. or something. It'll cost a little, but You won't have to start a new contract and if you get a newer phone, it will most likely see ICS. Do your research first, though. I'd hate for you to wind up with a different phone with the same issue.

good idea. so if i bought a verizon phone from a third party on ebay and then brought it into verizon they'll activate it for me no questions asked?

Yes. Hell, i don't even go into the store. Just call customer service, and tell them you want to activate on that line. They'll ask you for the MEid (on the back of the phone, under the battery) and 5 minutes later, it'll be done. The only requirement is to be in a verizon service area, as opposed to extended network.

Two cautions:
1. Deal with 'top sellers' only, and request the esn for verification BEFORE you purchase the phone. It's rare, but there are bad apples out there.
2. As i said before, do your research. Make sure it has the features you want, before purchasing. Most ebay auctions have a 'return for like item' policy, and don't do cash refunds. The only way to get your cash back is if there is a dispute. And that is a pain in the ass.

Like I said, these things are rare. I've purchased 2 phones off of ebay, and Both have worked exactly as advertised. Simply exercise caution, as in anything else.

What he said ^^^^ or.... you may actually activate the "new" phone online without having to call anyone at Verizon. I have an iPhone4 (not the "S" version) that I like a lot, but really miss some of the Android features. I have purchased a few Android phones on this forum as well as on eBay. So far (knock on wood), all my purchases have been without problems or issues.

Just go go to your account on-line and select the box that offers the Switch Devices option and follow the cues. As "I" continue using a "smart phone", there have been no changes in my monthly costs, and there is no charge to to for switching your phones around. I have done it several times, switching from one smartphone to another in the same day... Verizon makes it easy to do.

A couple of days ago, I obtained a "new" Samsung Continuum and the day I received it, went online and switched it over. Later that day, I switched back to my iPhone. Yesterday, I switched back to the Samsung and am still on it. The more I use this particular phone, the more I like it.

I noticed that your Continuum is "rooted". I have been thinking about rooting mine, but am afraid that I will brick my phone. I am getting along in years (71+) and sometimes do not comprehend today's "tech-speak" well enough to follow sketchy instructions.

I read many of the posts in the Rooting section of this forum, and it left me far more confused than informed. I am a retired IBM/Lockheed Martin Systems Engineer/Systems Analyst, been building computer systems since late 1977, and even with that and my corporate experience, I still feel somewhat unsure of myself.

Any suggestions?

The guide I made (rooting your phone via a rom) is pretty broken down. If you have a fundamental understanding of how bootloader, kernels, and operating systems interact, you are ahead of the curve. The rest is just phone specific terminology. Read over it and pm me with any questions you have.
