Default Reboot When Switching from LTE to CDMA

When I switch from LTE to CDMA or vice versa I have to reboot in order to get a network connection. Is this the norm?

Not for me. It will drop connection for just a few seconds and then regain it.

Happens to me as well. The 4G and 3G symbol does change after a few seconds, but if you open your browser I get a message that there is no data connection. A reboot fixes it.

You're in for a ride alright, I just don't know how much fun it will be.

I dont quite have the same problem.

However I commonly set my phone to 3g during the work hours as the only necessary data is that of constant emails and battery life. It'll work fine for anywhere from an hour to three in 3g mode, then the data drops out. No Emails will come through and I cant use the browser. Can drop down the menu and turn the "mobile data" off then on and it still wont work. If I set the phone from cdma to LTE and then back the data once again comes through.

Rebooting is not necessary for the data to come through again, just changing from one data type to another. IF I leave it set to LTE there is never an issue with data(charlotte has great lte coverage btw!), but then the battery life takes a dive.

The building I work in had no problems with signal in 3g or 4g mode, never less than 3 bars. At the house I typically see 4-5 bars in 3g and 4g. And the problems seems to exist anywhere, even with only using email(no extra programs).

I have a similar problem, toggling airplane mode on/off usually fixes it.

Seems kinda contradictory. If your coverage is great, LTE shouldn't suck proportionally more from your battery. Coverage is great in my area and I go an entire day on LTE without any battery issues. Perhaps you're holding on to a weaker LTE signal compared to CDMA which brings me to...

It has been discussed elsewhere that the signal meter on your phone is the CDMA signal, always. It's not representative of your LTE signal strength, but rather your ability to make a call which happens to coincide with EVDO (3G) because they operate on the same spectrum. The best conclusion you can draw is a) your 3G coverage is great, and b) you have 4G coverage.

I seem to be having the same issue but for me I simply toggle Mobile Data on the slid-down menu and that fixes the issue.

I have no LTE coverage around my house but I was in an area that had LTE coverage and was traveling back home. When I finally got back home I looked at my phone and noticed that it was still on 4G but when I went to try and load a web page it failed to do so. Toggling Mobile Data again fixed it and after doing that it connected via 3G.

What can I do to make this work right?

My wife has a similar problem with her Charge. We live right on the edge of the 4G area out of Charlotte. Almost every day she has to reboot her phone because she experiences this problem when she gets home from work. I'll suggest the Mobile Data toggle as a temp fix, but I suspect a more permanent one would have to come as an update from Samsung/Verizon.

This

I've got big issues with the 3/4G connections, or lack thereof, and I'm smack dab in the middle of Dallas. I also have problems with call quality when 4G is on, turn it to CDMA only mode and the call is crystal clear.
I'm half wondering if the actual hardware of this device is bad rather than the software.

Would someone with some knowlege explain why/how you are loosing your data connection and why a reboot is required? I have no such problems with my Charge, but had a lengthy conversation with someone recently and would like to better understand this problem (Is it actually a problem?).

I also wonder why anyone would want to turn 4G off? I have seen no real problems from having it turned on or benefit from having it turned off.

Thanks

Honestly have not found a solid answer to this question. Some people have the issue, some dont. I have some theories though.
1) The data connection gets turned off in order to save power, when the device refreshes/wakes it doesnt properly re-initiate the data connection.
2) The hardware has conflicts or didnt proplerly pass inspections. The reason I say this is that when I have the 4G signal turned on, my phone call quality is HORRIBLE, and I mean 1 in every 6 words I actually hear them horrible.
3) The Verizon signal/towers are not optimized properly.

These may not even be the absolute issue, but they're just a few theories I've had and been working through with the technical support people. I've got a LONG list of documentation about my randomly dissapearing Data Signal, randomly dissapering phone signal (but I have data), and UNACCEPTABLE call quality with the 4G signal on.

As for turning off the 4G signal and why... Besides the problems I'm having, the biggest reason is battery life. With 4G off, the phone battery lasts forever.

I would certainly believe #1. I've heard about a number of people installing battery extending apps that turn the data connections off on this phone. Some of these problems may be users not having the settings correct. Some may be problems with the apps. I also heard recently about some setting on the phone that would allow or disallow a wake on data packet received. On the phone in question, this was supposedly disallowed which caused problems. I don't know if this is real or not.

I have no experience with number 2. My call quality is great!

I would also believe that there could be issues with Verizon's 4G service. Given that they will be building it out over the next couple of years, it would be easy to believe there could be a variety of signal challenges in some areas.

I don't seem to have any issues myself. So, I'll just keep my fingers crossed it stays that way.

For battery life with everything but wifi turned on... I watch closely what's running in the background and almost always make it through a full day and them some without charging the battery! I do have the odd heavy use day where it will go in the car charger while driving home from work. This is as bad as it gets though.

A few weeks ago my Charge suddenly couldn't get a 3G or 4G signal. Phone calls worked but no data (except on wifi). So I went into the Verizon store and they removed the battery and SIM card. I haven't had an issue since. Not sure what removing the SIM card would do, but you might want to give it a try.

I reset my phone and let it restore everything except for JuiceDefender and now the phone seems to be able to transition between connection types seemlessly.

My Charge also has this issue (from OP). I'll switch to LTE to download a large app or a podcast. Then when I switch back to CDMA, I have no network connection.

Switching modes again, no help. Switching airplane mode on/off, no help. Switching mobile data off/on, no help. Haven't tried a reboot.

What seems to work is just to wait a few minutes. Then I'll look at the phone, and 3G is back. Go figure.

Question REALLY confused now.....

I just called sprint about this issue & after the rep did a little digging around on his end, he tells me this is normal. I mean, it doesn't LOOK like an issue as it actually warns me that it WILL be rebooted but, as per your replies in this thread, you're saying it shouldn't. If it does, that's a deal breaker for me.

Would anybody know if this is a function of the OS (Jellybean 4.2.2) or the phone? If it's the OS, might as well bite the bullet & keep it. But if it's a phone "thing", any recommendations as to what phone to look into as far as specs/features go? (sprint)
