Cool Battery Life w/GPS while on Car Cord?

I had to take a 9 hr trip to Florida last week. I figured I'd use MAPS with the GPS enabled to show directions while using the Car Charger to power the phone. Well about 4 hrs into the trip I hear the "Low Battery" sound and sure enough...it was about dead. The phone was really hot (battery) and the screen was not on for long periods, so I figured the battery overheated.

I turned the phone off to cool and then I allowed the battery to charge for about two hours and it came back for the remainder of the trip except that once I arrived in FL I had to once again charge it again....Is this normal?

I'm thinking that being on the car cord for that long time OR the car cord could not deliver enough current to power both the phone and the GPS. Do you have any ideas? I used a different car cord on the return trip and similar experience...
