Default 3 cables; 2 phones; no charging

Ended up with a second phone that operates basically as an android-ipod touch. Though, I'm living out of the country so both are in that mode.

One stopped charging altogether, so I would just charge both batteries and have extra battery life in the other. The one that did work, though, would do strange things like incessantly activate car mode. Sometimes one or the other would think it was charging, even when it wasn't connected to anything.

In the last week or so I've been unable to charge either of them, though I've tried multiple cables- stock, Kindle, and others.

Any suggestions?

IF your phone is charging with nothing plugged in, or it goes into car dock mode, chances are you have liquid damage on the charging port and the pins are shorting out due to corrosion and its causing the unit to THINK its charging.
Get some isopropoyl alcohol and clean the data port.
