This entire process is extremely slow and incomplete updating. The Froyo was 2.20 even though 2.2.2 was there with fixes. I guess all we can do as users is call Samsung support and complain to them. The carriers pushes back and says its up to Samsung not them to provide the update even though Telus does not release it live themselves. It Kies side loaded via their download.

As customer we need results. As it is, no more Samsung for me.
well any update is better than no update at all (or having one you had to jump through hoops to get)... when I was on Bell ( Also Known As Hell, some might say lol) my last phone was the Samsung Impact (T746) which was supposed to have OTA updates for its OS and firmware...

When they FINALLY released the first update, you couldn't get it OTA, you had to send it in, and Bell wouldn't do it unless there was something wrong with the phone (trying to use youtube (for mobile) always crashed my internet on the phone requiring a reboot)...

I much prefer being able to update the phone myself than having to send it in to be done... Hopefully there will be apps that can make up for the flaws and holes in the 2.3.3...

I personally have had good experiences with Samsung products... my lcd tv is rock solid, my old tower monitor is still working great after 5 years, and the fascinate is my 3rd samsung phone...

Hmmm, well there are 2 of these in our family. I have a Samsung TV which is good but I was ticked that they did not put external amplified analogue audio jacks. the ones they have are preamp out only and are not volume controlled. Hence bookshelf speaker cannot work, no audio powered outputs. I don't know where they get there engineers? Timbucktwo...they can't think in the real world.

Support and good firmware is everything. It makes it work correctly if it doesn't due to that I deem it defective and return it.

Apps installed from the market, data if any. Did the GB 2.3.3 update blow them away in the process. Just wonder if I risk the pludge how much I will have to rebuild if much at all to get the working functionality back.

Well I bit the bullet and gave the update a go. I took two tries. Backup failed on photos and stalled taken 15min /per photo. Then, I cancelled the backup and it went to do the updated. Decompressing files downloaded etc but hung up before switching to upload to the phone. Phone never toggled into download mode (Yellow warning the screen) which I saw at the end in the 3rd attempt.

All in all. The results were.
- all apps remained (built in and installed market apps)
- configuration of connections and all data remained intack
- memory card content appear unaffected (no surprise there)

My phone is still sluggish and I am not certain what I've gained other than its more secure than the Froyo version. If you run RU@RISK in Froyo you're vulnerable. In GB you're not so thats good step even though 2.3.4 is more secure and fixed some bugs.

I can't seem to get the update. Every time I've tried, Kies crashes just before it starts the install. Sadly, I think I'm going to have to call Samsung because I see no light at the end of the tunnel. If they continue to use Kies in the future to update their phones, I'll never buy another one.

I see you're a newbie. Well reboot the computer, power off the phone wait, 25 sec at least power it back on. Give it another go. Start kies first once loaded plug in the phone and leave it alone. Approx 15 min ... it looses USB connection and after the decompression phase it should toggle the phone into receiving the files, if so a YELLOW downloading screen appears. Then just wait and wait. Its updating. Forget about backing up anything other than contacts. I did not work for me.

Quite the contrary, actually. At the time, I was just very frustrated and was looking for answers in all the wrong places. Needless to say, I tried your method numerous times but to no avail.

After a conversation I had last night, it was suggested that I do a factory reset and then try upgrading the firmware. And as hesitant as I was to do that knowing I'd lose my apps (the phone isn't rooted so there's no TI backup), I did it regardless. Finally, I am running gingerbread.... and I might have lost some hair in the process as well.

Newbie was based on the number of posts on this forum. Nothing else, the upgrade process is not always smooth. I have always had problems the first time of each attempt. Clean starting both the PC and the phone should help short of wiping the phone as you did. Maybe an app was causing the conflict or affecting the USB port. I got to go int the downloading to the phone on the 3rd try and I wasn't certain of the results until done. Its unnerving and It was not rooted in my case. But success.

I suspect its bugs in Samsung's updating script. Now maybe 2.3.4 will come out and we'll be at the best for the platform. Speed response is still slow. My contacts tack a few seconds to appear and I don't have a huge list. A fraction of what was in my Palm Treo. I still haven't migrated them all or the notes I had either into this. It labour intensive and I don't want to do it over and over. I still use the Palm Desktop PIM and really mis that feature data syncing is so easy and reliable.

Well, I definitely have to remove Voodoo, if not totally reflash the original stock rom. I can't get Kies to do the update. If it makes a connection, at all, it will just freeze and hang. It was worth putting Voodoo on, anyway.

Now, how does the Fascinate behave with GB? Tripplec says it's still sluggish. Anyone else finding this to be the case? If so, another Voodoo patch may be in order.

For me, I've had no issues with GB. I noticed a significant increase in speed to my phone and the battery life is only slightly better than it used to be. All in all, I will enjoy what little improvements it's made to my phone.

my response is better today. Maybe its doing something in the background or a cleanup. I know I had to power off and back on before with Froyo before it settled out. I am going to power cycle it and see what happens after a few days.

I've had to power cycle mine many times. It would freeze and just not respond to anything, and the battery life sucked! I bit the bullet and wiped the phone. Now, it flies! How the hell do I root the damn thing now?

I actually did a factory reset, as well. I find the performance to be much better, or at least on par with Froyo + Voodoo.

I have a few minor complaints with TW, but nothing much. I just wish Samsung would have kept the vanilla GB notification bar. I think it's much better with the dark black and green, instead of the gradient black/grey. Samsung should also drop the "Apple" style app drawer, specifically in regards to the icons. That's just a personal preference on my part, but I can't stand it. It makes the phone look like Fisher Price. But that's just a general TW complaint and has nothing really to do with GB.

In any case, I'm glad I did the update. Now I have to update a Fascinate 4G, that my friend picked up the other day. He would never do it himself. heh

Edit: I also meant to ask if anybody has tried the root that Karmatose provided. Thanks, btw, Karmatose.

The interface for the pulldown notification menu and the bar is darker than in froyo... the icons are better looking now... as for the applications section it can be setup as a list instead of pages of icons...

I see no improvement as well. The brighter signal level icon was better and crisper. As for the battery symbol, soso. I use an app to tell me the exact % of battery left and always use that anyway.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the UI changes are greatly appreciated, i.e. the pull-down menu. And yeah, setting up the app drawer as a list instead of pages is really the way to do it. In the end, I use ADW Launcher anyway, except for on my Nexus S, where I just keep it vanilla.

You're welcome, and yes... It does work. Lots of positive feedback on XDA. I added a few screenshots to the thread on how to work Odin too.

2.3.3 seems ok. I don't like the apps arrangement now. The downloaded apps are mixed/sorted within the built in apps. Before they were at the end of the group and easy to determine which apps had been added.

I have also been getting Vlingo force closes a number of times. If I power off, wait until the vibrate cycle, then power it back on. Its ok for a while (day or two), then again. I am not certain why. I don't use it or lauched it and it wasn't running.
