I will be really surprised if we see Gingerbread on the Fascinate. I know as of recent Google is starting to crackdown on fragment issues and not wanting Bing on the phones (Google Cracks Down on Android Fragmentation - Mobiledia).

From my understanding Verizon made an agreement with Microsoft that a certain % of each type of smartphone devices i.e. Android, RIM (no iPhone at the time of the agreement) would have Bing pre-installed. With the complaints they are receiving with pre-installed Bing phones I don't think they are wanting to Bing out any new phones so as along as they have those few that meet the requirements for Verizon to continue receiving their payments from that fat $500 million.

I just conference called the CEO of Verizon and and Samsung and according to them, this phone will be getting Gingerbread about the time that the last proton in the universe spontaneously decays.

I can't wait!

The LG Revolution (likely to be released soon) will have Bing on it. That was the nail in the coffin on that phone for me. Waiting on the SGS2 now.

Hey guys, I just talked to my source at Verizon (trust me, he's reliable).

He said we'll definitely, without a doubt be getting Gingerbread in the next few weeks, so don't worry at all! I was so happy and trusting that I bought 10 Fascinates on the spot since he assured me his pay wasn't even based on the number of phones he sold

The world's ending in 2012 right? We'll probably see Gingerbread sometime around then.

LOL is this true? It's like the first thing they say to me when I walk in... So I'm skeptical.

Sorry, OT, I know... but since the rest of your post was 100% sarcasm (and hilarious at that), I wondered if this statement was following suit.

If we get 2.3 by September I will actually take back most of my negative comments about Samsung being late on updates. To go from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 in a year from the device's release is really not too shabby. 2.2 was late, but 2.3 by September would more than make up for it in my opinion.

Great, here we go again. See you all next April/May for OTA gingy...

Cellular South recently announced this about their I-500. This was posted before they released the 2.2 Update.

We have approved Android 2.2 for the Samsung Galaxy S and anticipate it being available to you by the end of next week. While 2.2 offers new features including flash capabilities, it will not fix some of the native client email problems on 2.1. We're happy to announce that Android 2.3 will be in our labs for testing by 7/11 and should fix these issues. We will provide weekly progress updates when 2.3 testing begins.

So if 2.3 takes as long as 2.2 did, it will be out by the end of 2011 / beginning of 2012 for Cellular South customers. Verizon customers I'm assuming will get it a few months before as with 2.2.

Here's my take. It's a pretty huge jump from 2.1 to 2.2, that's why it took such a long time. But from 2.2 to 2.3, the difference isn't that great, so I'm thinking a shorter time frame.

Default Misinformed I guess(me)

I was on with tech support for the many issues I have with my phone and they told me it was out and not to download it if I get the notification for it. I just got the phone on Friday and it came with 2.2.1 which she said to keep for now. The 2.3, I was told has caused many issues and that if or when I get the update to avoid it until a second comes(supposedly in a couple weeks) then download the first and follow with the second that is more stable. This is just what I was so cant be certain since they have lied to me several times in the last week.

It's out but don't download it? VRZ wouldn't push it out if it's causing more problems than it is fixing.

Yeah, if there's one thing Verizon is notorious for, it's OVER testing, not under testing. Although any major update is bound to cause problems. One of the drawbacks of having a fairly open OS with multiple apps that have different levels of permissions and system access, all while interacting with Verizon bloat and the normal android stuff (and TouchWiz) is that there are bound to be issues with major updates on a good amount of handsets. Updates are slightly more regulated and controlled within Apple's ecosystem, which is one of their advantages. Like most of the folks here, I choose the customizability over the ease and convenience of a tightly controlled ecosystem, but I also accept the cost, for the most part. The crap manufacturers and especially carriers add to the mess makes it a LOT worse than it needs to be.

Honestly, though, 2.2 is quite good, and doesn't need much "fixing". I have ran Gingerbread and don't find it quite as significant of a jump as going from 2.2 to 2.3. 1.6 to 2.1 was substantial. 2.1 to 2.2 was also substantial (flash, apps to SD card, multiple google account support - even calendars, much better event/contact creation, and a lot more). 2.2 to 2.3 adds some good stuff for sure, but nothing I actually NEEDED. I really really wanted flash, and I actually truly needed multiple google account integration without using a 3rd party app. And with a Fascinate, unlocking the SD card to more apps will be very useful when that relatively small 2GB fills up. In addition, there is a substantial list of apps that work better (or possibly even only) with 2.2 than 2.1. In comparison, I know of only a couple that really "need" 2.3 to work properly, despite 2.3 being released on a lot of new handsets.

2.2 got a LOT of excellent market saturation, and thus has a huge developer and support backing. But there are some advantages to 2.3 not being quite as drastic of a change - more stuff will make the transition easier.

Regardless, I am just happy VZ and Sammy are continuing to support this phone. I realize there were a lot of upset folks because of the delay to get 2.2, and rightly so, but the support has been there. Samsung even released 2.2's legit source code to the developer community, from which we have seen some absolutely sensational ROMs, such as the Community ROM. I expect them to release 2.3's source code as well. Samsung is lately redeeming their lateness with me by still being one of the most dev friendly manufacturers out there. Even HTC has some tightly locked bootloaders now. HTC, Samsung, and Motorola are the worldwide android giants, and out of all of them, timelines and TW aside, Samsung has definitely been overall the most dev friendly.

I can't wait to see what the devs do with 2.3 source code! That is gonna be a party day for rooted Fascinate owners. HECK YEAH!!

As I said in the original post, its what the tech support told me. I haven't seen it or had it pushed on my phone. I have even searched for updates manually after we had talked and nothing came up. Just relaying what they told me as of last night.

Sammy doesn't care about customers. All they care about is $$$$$. I honestly feel like Samsung relies on people to put out ROMS to take care of their current buyers. Their to busy making ANOTHER phone rather then concentrate on the ones that are out. Captivate, Vibrant, Epic, Infuse and Charge are all waiting on gingerbread. Galaxy S2 users are going to be complaining when ice cream comes out and yet 7 months into it they still don't have it for their device. That's the problem when you release 10+ phones out a year.

Why would they use a 5MP rear camera? That's unexpected, and makes zero sense for a phone with specs off the charts for everything else.

If the Fascinate gets gingerbread, I hope it doesn't change much for the user interface because if it does it'll take me forever to get used too!!

Why would they use a 5MP rear camera? That's unexpected, and makes zero sense for a phone with specs off the charts for everything else.
Well the 5mp is very good IMHO and bigger mxpls dont make a better cam for an example watch the Nokia Lumia pt 2 review on phonedog.com !!

The waiting is over. I just got the Gingerbread update on my Fascinate from Verizon!

Way too early to say much, but first impressions are quite favorable.

Default Gingerbread is here!

I manually did a Software Update, and lo and behold, Verizon pushed me 3.2.5, Build EH03.

First impressions are good, very good!

The phone rebooted during the update; kept Google settings but most of my application settings (preferences and logins) had to be redone, no data loss of course.

The BEST thing I noticed so far is that stupid 'battery fully charged' pop-up and notification sound is GONE! Finally.

The graphics are nicer, the speed is faster (clocked 1,347 on quadrant). Hopefully the GB update helps the battery life too. And I **think** it has the ICS keyboard too (at least it's the same one as the ICS beta in the market).

So far I am liking it.

I was just thinking of wiping my phone clean I am an app junkie. It lost it whiz and could take up to a minute sometimes to exit an app and have my home page come up. I would just stare at a background. Seems much faster with no delay. I probably still should clean up my running apps.

They have removed the GPS on/off indicator from the top of the screen which is a minor pain because you cannot tell at a glance whether you have your GPS on or not. You will need to pull down the top drawer and check whether you have it on from there.

Thanks for warning me of this- however I think that would be okay with me. I'm really picky with the UI of my phone and computers!

I'm updating right now. Can't wait for it to finish.

The Samsung Fascinate is the Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones. Much like it's brothers, it includes the same 5.0MP camera capable of taking some of the best quality 720p HD video at 30fps. Unlike the other Galaxy S phones ... Read More
