My phone is doing the samething since the update. It worried me at first but I just live with the fact that I have to hit the home button.

So I just found something that I have not found to be documented anywhere else. Wondering if it needs to go here:

Changes that FroYo(build DDJP6) brings about to the Galaxy S

It seems that the trigger for lighting up the soft keys is now tied to the "Automatic brightness" setting under display settings

(settings > display settings > brightness > Automatic Brightness checkbox)

When checked, the softkeys will come on as soon as the phone is brought awake and the screen is touched to unlock (either puzzle piece or "slide to unlock).

when unchecked, the softkeys do not come on until one of them is actually touched.

I can see this being useful for those of you who do nighttime reading on your SGS.

That's kinda nice that I can at least have them not be on until I touch them. Still, they don't go back off once you touch them unless you lock/unlock the phone again

So you've tested it and found this to be true?

It does suck that they won't go back off if you're reading in bed or something. I was going nuts trying to figure out why they were acting how they were acting.

I just tried it when I read that and it worked as mentioned. Can't find anything that will make them go off without lock/unlock.

I've have seen them go off on their own at times but can't find a reason. I thought maybe it had something to do with the ScreenOn widget I installed to keep the screen on. Thought if the display timeout was set to 15 seconds and the ScreenOn widget was running, maybe after 15 seconds the keys would go off and the screen would stay on, but everything stayed on. Also noticed in the display timeout setting, when ScreenOn is ON, nothing is checked on the timeout menu.

I'm not AS annoyed with the phone as I was. I just need to use ScreenOn Widget, NOLED app, and Handcent SMS to do everything I want. Still, would be nice if ALL CHANGES were given to us when we install the update instead of going for days not knowing where they hide the settings now

Well, I don't have a ScreenOn widget and I've noticed that the softkey buttons will randomly go out too. It seems to be after the first "wake" of the phone after sitting for some time. So if I have my screen timeout to be, say, 30 seconds... I will wake my phone, slide to unlock (just touching the screen to slide to unlock will light up softkeys) then I'll browse out to my app drawer or something and then the softkeys will go off. This will all take about 5-10 seconds. Screen stays on, softkeys go off. They don't come back on till I press one of them. Then, when they come back on, they will stay on. Very odd.

found another way to turn the soft key lights off until you touch them!
on the "power control" widget, the lighting button had a small change where the lights can be set to automatic now, like the other setting in the display menu. when you press the lighting button on the power widget and cycle to "A", the lights go off until you press them or change the lighting.

oops, as I was ready to press submit, a txt came in and it makes the keys light up
