Default Complete phone idiot. Questions about Gingerbread / ICS?

Alright, so I just want to start off by saying, while I may be most capable on a computer, I'm a total idiot when it comes to phones. I live in Maine, and my options here have been limited until recently lol.

Anyway. I have a Fascinate, which is running on Straight Talk. I bought it this way from a friend. It is on Android 2.2.2 which I believe it came with or was updated to.

I have another phone, a Sumsung Epic, which is on 2.3.6, and although the technical specs of the phones seem to be identical, the Epic runs amazingly smooth, where the Fascinate is a bit slow at times.

I have absolutely no idea how to upgrade the OS on a phone. I know it needs to be rooted, which I also do not have any clue on where to even begin.

I know I can look guides up to do this. My real questions are these.

1. Does the Fascinate run well with 2.3.6? I would assume it does, but have read a few things about certain functions on the phone not working.

2. How about ICS? I saw this on youtube, had no idea it could be put on a Fascinate.

3. Is there any other reason my Epic could be out performing my Fascinate by so much? When I benchmark them, the Epic is winning by more than 400 points when they are both freshly formatted.

4. This is the big one! Would anyone capable be willing to assist me with getting my phone rooted and upgraded if I were to pay? I have found people that will do this on ebay. I did not want to do it until I knew if it was even a good choice or not.

Any information that may help me would be appreciated. Be it links or facts, suggestions, whatever.

Thanks.

I would love some help. I just want to be sure that it will be safe for me to do first.

I read somewhere that people using ICS were unable to use their camera at times or something like that...the camera is basically the only reason I flashed a "real" phone to ST rather than just buying an ST phone.

As long as nothing I do is irreversible I will give it a try. If there is any way to remove a pile of the pre-installed Verizon apps I would love that also. Since I am technically not using Verizon's service, just their towers, they do not even work for me.

ok heres the deal...ive had this phone since oct. had it rooted it a matter of hrs . had (with the help of people more talented then myself) ICS on it two hrs later.
Now having said that...if anyone on here wants help rooting their fascinate and getting ICS on there phone i am willing to help. I will posting links to step by step instructions on how to complete each step. these are threads created by other people that deserve all the credit. i will simply be here to answer ?s and guide.
i have gotten pretty good with this phone. had an incredible that i was equally talented on. (my girlfriend id running ICS on hers)
Now as far as returning to stock that is very possible with this phone. Samsung created a program called ODIN that was designed just to flash things to ur phone...pretty sweet huh? Now u can get back to stock...with no superuser permissions(which what being rooted gives you) however I honestly have no way of knowing if they have other ways of finding out. NOTE>ROOTING YOUR PHONE VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY. DO EVERYTHING TO YOUR PHONE AT YOUR OWN RISK..sry I have to say that. however please have faith that I would not have wasted my time to type all this if I was full of #%@&. Ive had many peolpe help me along the way Im just trying to return the favors
So ill start putting together a guide if anyone is still interested? just post so i know

The only thing you said that makes any sense to me is the rooting. I know what that means other than that no idea -,-

This is not something I even want to attempt doing myself lol. And I have no warranty on this phone, and it is running on Straight Talk which I am not even sure is legal >.> So that isn't an issue.

I know how to transfer files via usb and everything yes. And I don't know. The person who put my phone onto ST did it over teamviewer. I was going to download Odin and try the whole process myself once. Kept getting errors and never got anywhere, so I just stopped trying >.>

If there is a step by step to get from 2.2.2 to 2.3.6 I guess I could try that. Or to Icecream if that is better. I just don't want to sacrifice any performance for features I may not use. I'm pretty convinced that the only reason my Epic beats my Fascinate in benchmarks is due to the 2.3.6 on Epic. As otherwise they are identical phones.

I don't really know anything about Icecream. All I know about 2.3 is that it has flash support which my 2.2 doesn't. But it seems to be a lot smoother moving around the OS.

honestly i have never run gingerbread(2.X) on this phone. I mean for a couple secs when i flash back to stock when ive messed something up(u wont be able to do that..mess things up i mean...by mess up i mean trying to put things on phone that r still in development...I.E. new roms ,themes stuff like that...but that wont be a problem for u)but i got this phone just to run ICS.
Ok so now here is what u do....Follow this post. Just download the ODIN program, the clockwork recovery ,and the SU 2.3.6.1 zip. now if u have hooked ur phone up before u shouldnt need to install the drivers u may want to just in case but really shouldnt be nec. we will know in a matter of min if u need to.
I know it looks overwhelming but it isnt. im here to help.
post back when u have everything downloaded and we will go from there

[HOW TO] Root Froyo or Gingerbread on Your Fascinate
The clockwork recovery...do I need all of those files? I downloaded everything I guess I will give it a try and see what happens lol.

EDIT: Also, doesn't this just root it? Once I root it how do I upgrade? Told you I'm dumb at this =/

the clockwork file(s) should be in zip format. Do u not have winzip or 7zip or something like that? Also yes this will just root you phone. there steps in addition to this to get to ICS 2 or 3 steps or so..however not hard. what that lin will do is root your phone and install a recovery system...what u need to flash roms to your phone...I>E> roms like ICS. A recovery system will let you backup ur whole system, let u install different roms..there are a couple different ICS roms out there for this phone all with there own little cool features.
BTW did u see my screen shot?

Yea I saw it. I just want to make sure if I get ICS that everything on my phone will still function. I am also kind of worried that rooting it will somehow mess up the fact that I have basically fooled Straight Talk into thinking that my Fascinate is an LG 220C phone -,-

If I lose my ST service itll cost me 70 bucks to get it put back >.>

i dont use that app myself. however< if u were to look on other websites more geared toward development like XDA.com or RootzWiki.com and u search this phone u will see that not only have people been running ICS on it for awhile but they are starting to theme it. by theming i mean thing look different..battery symbol, signal symbol, the way screens pop in and out..all sorts of stuff. check it out. ill always be here to help. like i said before i know this phone in and out..lol

Because compared to my Epic 4g which has the same exact specs it is incredibly slow. My Fascinate has 2.2.2 my Epic has 2.3.6. All I was really trying to do was upgrade the Fascinate to 2.3.6 so that it would (hopefully) run as well as the Epic.

u can root ur phone and not loose anything. u will just have superuser permissions. everything will look and run the same until u put a new rom on it.

I have a friend who is a phone nerd with a Samsung Mesmerize which to my understanding is this identical phone but from USC and he has it overclocked to insane speeds and has tons of stuff on it. He is the one who got me onto Straight Talk but he won't just help a friend out he made me pay him for the 2 hours it took lol.

I don't need to have a 1.4 ghz phone but I would like it to run at least as well as the Epic that I have sitting in a box!

I will try rooting it tonight and if that goes as planned and I haven't lost my service I will look into 2.3 or possibly 4.0. Maybe if I don't sound like such an idiot my friend will give me some info without asking for money lol

Ok so that part wasn't hard. I have the superuser permissions or whatever. The skull app is in my apps list.

Now where do I go from here to get ICS?

Also...is there a way for me to uninstall the apps that I can't even use? Mainly most of the Verizon apps that do not even work since I am not on Verizon? Or the bloatware like Blockbuster video rentals and things like that?

ok good to here. See i told ya ...not hard. Now to get ICS there are three steps. I dont have time to list them now. but i will later tonight. ill post the next step thread later....promise.
Also, now that u r rooted, there is nothing u cant do with that thing. U can erase whatever u want. even stock apps. Go to market and download root unistaller.
Icon should be lil green android. Run that give it superuser permission(window will pop u just hit yes) and u can unistall whatever u want.
Ill be back

Lol. I can wait until morning. I found out it wasn't the camera that people were saying wasn't working, it was the camcorder. Does your camcorder work? Thats kind of a critical part of my phone to me >.>

If not I will just go to 2.3.6

there is nothing that i have found on this rom of ICS i can get u on that doesnt work.
You have to understand that there are any army of developers out there that have ported some many ICS roms to our phone its crazy. Hell I had ICS on my phone before the nexus even came out. Google releases the source code of all OS platforms to the public as a way of finding out bugs. Again I implore u to go to XDA.com or Rootzwiki.com to search your phone and see all the different ICS roms out.
Not only will everything work but it will do things stock roms cant. I.E. different battery symbols, pulldown menu options, app drawer options. Believe me u get the right rom on that thing and i will blow ur mind.
Stick we me bud. Im off tomorrow. We will get that thing flying!

Lol yea I did check some out. Someone said they had 4.6.5 I think? Thats the most current one at least I guess...or maybe it isn't idk. As long as I can reverse it if I don't like it I will try it anyway. My phone already scores higher in quadrant just from removing all the bloatware. Its still nearly 250 points under my Epic though...which is annoying considering they are identical minus a keyboard on the fascinate -,-

ok heres the deal:
The most current Android OS is 4.0.4. 4.0.5 if u have a G nexus. Anyway, now that you rooted your phone you can start putting custom roms on it. Now that u have a recovery image(clockwork)where u installed the SU zip file, you can backup your phone so when/if u decide to put a new rom on and u dont like it or it doesnt like your phone you can simply restore a previous rom and setup with the press of a button.
Now, you cant backup a stock rom. Have can only backup custom roms. So what u wanna do is use astro file manager or titanium backup to backup your apps.(this will save u from going to market and redownloading them).
Then we need to wipe your phone clean and install a custom rom.
NOTE:::when u flash new roms ur SD is left alone. So dont worry, ur pics, contacts everything will be ok. Now ur text messages and all with disappear and call log.
After u get a custom rom on it u can set it up and back it up. To get ICS u need to put a GB rom on it first. here is a link. Im here all day to answer ?S
once you have that GB rom on we can then go to ICS.
NOTE:nce you flash a custom rom the only way to go back to stock is to ODIN back to it. When i say stock i mean it. It will preform like it just came out off the box.
However, once you get ICS on that thing u will never wanna go back

follow these directions. have a question? just post.
BTW when it says wipe dalvik cache that is located in the advance folder.

Alright gonna give it a try I guess. Downloaded the 3 files it said I needed and I guess we'll see.

EDIT: See this doesn't help me...it just says "flash this" and then "flash this"

I don't know how to flash them unless it is the same process I did before with the PDA and click start...

Sigh -,-

OK, when it says to flash something...that means to install it in ur clockwork recovery. The "dos" looking screen. To flash means to simply choose install zip from SD card, then navigate using the volume controllers to go up and down and the power button to enter. Just place the file on ur SD card. u can make a new folder if u want when u have ur phone hooked to ur compter and place the files in there. it doesnt matter. So once u odin the new recovery and odin says pass, put the battery back in. hold both volume buttons and power button until u see samsung then let go.
once in recovery scroll to install zip then navigate to where u have it, hit enter(power) then it will take u to another window hit yes then let it do its thing.
Once its done dont do anything. hold power button to power off. u will see a rebot window hit thaT THEN HIT RECOVERY. UKNOW NO LONGER NEED TO THE THE THREE FINGER METHOD TO GET TO IT. now install the gapps with the same process and then hit reboot phone.
Profit. Next step is ICS. very easy

Had to leave the house for a bit. I have everything downloaded and just pulled all the files onto my SD card.

It said I could do it without ODIN if I just used the current CWM to flash the new one. I was going to just do it that way. Unless there is a reason I should do it using ODIN instead?

EDIT: Nevermind, I used ODIN and am now formatting / wiping the cache and whatever else. This isn't that hard I guess lol.

EDIT AGAIN : Lol ok. I'm done. I'm on the GApps with cm7.

Now what

Yes I am on CM7. Looks totally different, but my quadrant went from 1230's to 1550's. Its finally ALMOST the same as my stock Epic >.>

Random off topic...I just saw the Galaxy Note for the first time today...wtffff!!! The screen is bigger than my entire phone including the case lol.

yeah u will start to see more of those phone/tabs coming out.
Ok here we go.
Now what u will need to down is download the file i post. Its a zip file. So just like all other zips put it on the SD card of your phone. Now using the power button take the phone into recovery. Wipe everything. user data, cache, dalvik all three. Now install this rom.
Ok what this rom will do is put ICS on your phone, however it is a very very basic version. However we need to flash this on first because this rom will set up ur phone MTD for u. Dont worry bout it u dont need to know. lol. Anyway everyone has to flash this first once u install this dont panic when it looks like ur phone is turning off just let it do its thing. When it is done it will reboot itself..i think..been a min..if not just hit reboot. Now when this boots for the first time it will take a lil while. dont panic. lol Once its done booting post back and we will get u a beefy ICS rom. UR almost done all the hard stuff is done.
