Default Phone is confused between USB storage and my SD card

I just upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, after using my old Xperia for 2 years. I love the phone apart from one really annoying problem and that's the phone seems to be confused between its USB Storage and SD card.

The USB storage is 1.10 GB and seems to be the default partition for large app data that you have to download like maps for gps and game files for hd games, so it runs out very quickly.

It is located at /sdcard

I have a 32GB SD card, where I ideally want this application data to live so I can have more apps.

It is located at /sdcard/external_sd.

I tried editing vold.fstab to swap internal/external sds to no avail and had to restore the original.

Task Manager > Storage is showing my storage information correctly but apps such as App to SD are treating my USB storage like my SD card. When these apps download their additional data it goes to my USB storage. In the applications menu "On SD Card" displays apps on my USB storage.

I'm looking for either:
  • A way to move the apps and appdata from USB storage to my SD card. I know this can be done in a file manger but then the apps wont be able to find their data.
  • A way for these apps to save additional data to my SD Card NOT my USB storage.
  • A way to get the phone to realise my USB storage is NOT my SD Card.
  • A way to completely disable USB storage and use my SD card as its primary storage function.
  • A working vold.fstab modification for the Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-i8160
Many thanks

Its not confused. Its just the way Android was designed in the first place. This is because apps gets problematic when put in a separate drive at times. What you are asking for can only be done if you are rooted.

Welcome to Android Forums, Ruarz!

I have moved this thread into the Ace 2 forum for further discussion, so that the other Ace 2 owners can post their tips here, and learn from this thread as well.

I'd really like to see help for this because, while I love the phone aswell, this problem has been driving me nuts.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I am still having problems with the whole USB/system/external SD storage issue!!
I can load songs/videos/apps to my external SD card no problem, & when I select "move to SD" on my apps/games on my phone memory it moves them to the external SD. My question is, how do you move or save stuff to the USB storage partition?? It is 1.1GB & never gets used, I can't seem to move any apps/games to this area. Is there a way to select this area or else what is it there for? Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this matter.......

@GrahamF

If you go into Application Manager and move apps from phone memory to SD card I'm petty sure you aren't moving them to the actual external SD card, but only to the USB storage on the internal phone memory.

You might want to take a look at this thread, mate. There are some good questions and answers regarding phone storage in general.

I'm not sure whether you can if you buy the apps from Google Play, but I've bought a few games directly from Gameloft's website and I can install them from my external SD card just fine. You can also move data files (Android/data) in some cases (which are usually larger than the app itself) from internal memory to your memory card (Android/data) freeing up your phone's internal memory that way.

Hi CVL, well that's the thing! They ARE moving to the external/removable SD card & it is filling up quickly. My USB internal memory isn't changing, it stays at 1.08GB no matter what I move. I cannot get any apps to go to the USB storage. So at the moment I have a wasted 1.08GB!!
I'll have a look at the link too, thanks.

EDIT - I've just been playing around & in settings in the "my files" folder is "set home directory", mine shows as "/sdcard"....... is this the problem??
ie/ are all things going to the SD Card? I have the option to change this to "sdcard/usb storage", will that send stuff to the usb, or will I cock everything up?! I want music/videos/photos to go to the external SD & only apps/data to the usb storage. Am I asking too much??

Hmm, well that does sound rather strange. If you open My Files and go to Settings - "Set Home Directory" ... Is it set to /sdcard (default) or perhaps External/sd card instead? I'm not sure if that could be the problem, but it might be worth trying.

I'm going to try amending the home directory to sdcard/usb storage & see if my phone blows up!

Heheh yeah I saw your edited message after I posted mine. *twilight zone theme*

I'm not sure why your apps won't move to internal sdcard though. You could try to download and install the free version of Raging Thunder 2 from Google Play which I know can be moved to internal sd card. After installation try (through "Manage Applications") the option to "move to sdcard" and see what happens. Maybe it's just the apps you've got now that won't move to internal sdcard?
