Someone has leaked a Samsung jelly bean ROM over at xda, first indications seem to say it looks stable. Hopefully this means an official release isn't far away

Will the Jelly Bean update be available from the software update within the phone, or will it show in the notifications to allow or deny?

I imagine it will be through the software update in the phone. You will need to be connected to WIFI though, it will take a while to download. By the look of things we should have Jelly Bean on our Ace 2 by the end of March.

Will there be a need to download Jelly Bean? will it make much difference?

I've found Gingerbread to be not too bad, never sluggish or anything, but I imagine there will be some improvements.

What worries me is if there is a corrupted download, will this or could this cause a corruption to the existing operating System being Gingerbread?

I suppose It's just a matter of personal preference. If you're happy with the Gingerbread OS then stick with that. Personally I will update mine to jellybean, I'm looking forward to the new notification bar, It can now expand, to show you a portion of your inbox, rather than just the number of texts or emails waiting for you.

This link will tell you a lot more Android - What's New

I have software update ticked for automatic update notification, does this mean I have the option to ignore, and if I chose to ignore will I have the option show again by clicking on check for software updates?

If you are worried about the jellybean update, turn off the automatic update notification. Then you will not receive any messages telling you to upgrade. If you decide you would like to update the software on your phone in the future, go to, Settings, About phone, then tap on Software update. Like I said in the previous post, no one is making you update your phone, it is entirely up to you. Maybe wait until jelly bean has rolled out on the Ace 2 and read some of the reviews. I can almost guarantee they will be positive. Why would you not want the latest OS anyway?

It's not that I don't want it, but I'm always tentative about updates. I take it the phones hardware will cope with all the latest functions as per that site you kindly gave me, but yeah I think I will read user reviews when they become available first, just so that I will be aware of any such issues that arise after updating to Jelly Bean.

On a much lesser note, on your home screen first page, does your google search widget, the long bar one underneath the weather, does it have the blue google to the left of it? like shown on this image here?

http://www.gsmnation.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-2.jpg

Or is it like mine that looks like this?

http://www.blogyourearth.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-2-Startbildschirme.png

Just curious why some images of this phone have the blue and some don't.

I don't know if this is any use, it's just a guess, but is your google search app updated to the latest version? Mine is and I don't have the blue icon.

When I check mine on the google store it says installed, and an option to open it, which usually means that I have already installed that particular version.

I have a feeling I updated this automatically when I first got my phone.

I do however have the blue google search icon on the first application screen.

Would updating the google search actully have updated that first widget which is on the home screen?

Hmm, I don't know, sorry. I think we're going a bit off topic here anyway. I keep thinking there's some news on when Jelly Bean's coming, ha.

If you don't want the widget on your screen, you can still access search quickly by just holding down the menu hardware button on the phone.

Am I right in thinking that to-date there hasn't been an official JellyBean update for the Samsung Galaxy Ace II?

Just for the record, I took the 'bull by the horns' and flashed the 'leaked' official version of 4.1.2 to my Ace 2 a couple of days back. I'd been reading that Jelly Bean had lost the ability to install apps to SD card, but in my experience this is not so. At first I had a memory problem when installing the off-line maps for UK/ROI for NavFree, but I reflashed the 4.1.2 firmware, and made sure that Navfree was the first app I installed. It's fine now and seems pretty stable*. There's not much in it between my Ace 2 and my wife's new S3 Mini, except maybe the latter has a bit more speed and a nicer screen.

*EDIT April 1st 2013. Having now given the leaked version a bit more of a work-out, I have a few concerns that, if not addressed in the official release, I shall be doing my darndest to revert to Gingerbread.

1. The Bluetooth connection to my car dash is frequently lost and then re-established.

2. The phone screen frequently locks with only a grey striped flicker showing. This refuses to be cleared by either the back button or main on/off switch, and I'm getting a bit fed up with removing the back to get at the battery.

3. It does indeed seem 'laggier'. I didn't think so at first but compared to my HTC Desire S on ICS, scrolling has become slightly jerky.

Fortunately for me, this phone is only really a 'cast-off' from my wife's contract. It it's your main phone, my advice would be to leave JB well alone (assuming that the official distribution version is as bad)

I'm actually very happy with Gingerbread, think I will stay with it unless there is a real need for Jelly Bean.

When it is available officially I imagine that there will be an option to cancel the upgrade.

Well folks, it looks like us Ace 2 owners will not be getting the Jelly Bean upgrade until the end of April at the earliest.. I think we'll be very lucky if we even get it here in the UK!

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 Jelly Bean – Rollout To Being Towards The End Of April ?

My thoughts exactly - that's why I flashed the 'official leak' to my phone. I can understand why others might not like the idea, but it's really just my wife's contract upgrade 'cast-off' so it's nice to have something that doesn't matter too much if I break it! At least by leapfrogging ICS altogether, we've regained working links in texts, which was a problem with my other phone flashed to ICS. Having a bit of trouble pairing the Ace 2 with my car dashboard on Bluetooth - it took several attempts before it would load the contacts to the car. Seems to be OK now. Not sure if my network ever supplied the Ace 2 so flashing it via Odin may well be the only way to get JB for me.

When this Jelly Bean up-date finally arrives I take it that it will show up as a notification, or will it automatically update?

I ask again as I'm not too sure if I want it or not, and I heard that for Ace II users there is not that much to get exited about. Just wondered if it will arrive in the notifications just to say there is an update, and if there would be an option to refuse the update, or will it be a case of simply un-ticking the option for automatic updates.

I normally use the Google play store for updates, and I choose whether to install them or not. I wouldn't think that this JB update would have anything to do with Google play store thing though..

Where will the update actually come from?

billynibbles,

As you are using it right now can you say what difference you have noticed after flashing for Jelly Bean as opposed to Gingerbread?

Where exactly will the JB update come from, I take it that it won't be from the Google Play Store will it? and will it just appear as a notification to install or decline?

My next question will be that if it's not from Google Play then if at first you decline the notification where would you later go again to find and install it?

Surely there won't be a need to turn this off as it's only a notification, and then if declined then clear would remove it, then as you say I could always go back to check for updates manually.

Is there a simple link that tells us what the JB update does as opposed to Gingerbread?

Will the following cause issues when eventually updating to Jelly Bean? and if so should this setting be disabled prior to download/installation of Jelly Bean?

Lock my phone if sim card is changed.

I imagine when updating to Jelly Bean isn't actually changing the sim card.

Will users of the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 be required to clear any app data before we get the new Jelly Bean? I read some articles that some say they had to delete the data for Google's Frame Network.

If you going to install official JB with "KIES" ?!
Than just follow the instructions from Samsung.

But if you going to install official JB using "Odin" ?!
Than you better read some instructions from "XDA developer forums" before you flash the update.

(It is advisable and important to back-up your phone before you update it in any case.)

But if you flash it than you are advised to back-up and than perform a factory reset before you flash the software.
That is to avoid any possible conflicts/bugs with the new software.

Hope this explanation was helpful.
Regards

Than you better read some instructions from "XDA developer forums" before you flash the update.

(It is advisable and important to back-up your phone before you update it in any case.)

But if you flash it than you are advised to back-up and than perform a factory reset before you flash the software.
That is to avoid any possible conflicts/bugs with the new software.

Hope this explanation was helpful.

I thought it would just be simple like going to about phone and clicking manually on software update or perhaps just waiting on the update notification.

I don't use Kies.

I wish I could give you a real answer on the subject but Is too early to speculate about it.
But as you are aware is a massive jump from GB to JB and skipping ICS.
The update is over 500mbps data.
So I don't believe it will be released over the Ota update.
It's a all new operating system.
Very similar to the S3.

I am running JB on my phone already . Flashed with Odin .
(Official Portugal TMN-MC8).

The last update I received on GB "XXLK 7" Samsung forced me to use Kies for that.
So I am convinced that once the update arrives here in the UK.
It will be available thru Kies.
You will receive the notifications about the update being available on your phone once is available.
And the instructions about how to update as well.

Just be patient.
It is worth it.
Is like having an all new phone again after the update.
Good stuff

There are plenty of people complaining about different problems...

But It is all down to what you do and how you do it...

The JB Rom is as stable as the GB Rom. If correctly installed/flashed.

I can't claim to be having problems with my phone running JB.
Apart from the same problems I used to have running GB.
People claim to be having problems with the phone freezing on JB.
(Is true). But my phone used to freeze on GB as well...

The lack of Ram is the problem.
Touchwiz is power/ram hungry.
The Galaxy Ace 2 is not great for multitasking.
Apart from that I am happy with it.
This is a mid range low end phone.
It will never be as good as a top of the range phone.

There are different ways to fix/solve this problems .

Note:
(MB2/MB4 are Beta leak versions specially tailored for Europe.) and have bugs reported although MB4 is stable.
(MC8 is official built for TMN Portugal/Europe) and (MC4 is official for China only).
Firmware specs varies from region to region...
Example:
European firmware is not good for China.
Chinese firmware will ruin a European device.

But my advice to you or anyone reading this is to be patient and waiting for the Ota / KIES update for your (country/region) from Samsung officially.

Hopefully the Ota / Kies update will have all the problems addressed and fixed by then.

Better safe than sorry.

Remember:
Flashing your phone is dangerous.
Flashing can brick your phone.
And you might lose your Warranty.

Be safe.
Be patient.

Default Official Jelly Bean 4.1.2

I corrected this post as I finally can confirm that:

On the 18/April/2014 TMN
Is advertising the Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 Jelly Bean 4.1.2 for sale in Portugal.

All JB releases to today's date are official but...

- The MB2 was the first leak.
- The MB4 was the second leak.
(And replaced the MB2 leak.)

Now listed as MB2/MB4.
And is listed as (Greece) firmware.

But there is no JB firmware for the ace 2 available in "Greece"yet.

- The MC8 was reported as the official firmware for TMN Portugal.

On the 18/04/2014 "TMN PORTUGAL" is finally selling the Galaxy Ace 2 Jelly Bean.

- The MC4 is the latest firmware available for China only.
And everyone that tried to flash it is reporting that it ruined the phone.

None of the releases to date are bug free.
So it is very likely they will receive some hot fix really soon.

My phone is the GT-18160 and I am using the MC8 TMN release.

The firmware is stable but faulty at times.
(If I bought the phone in this condition I wouldn't want it and would consider it faulty).

So if you flash any of this JB releases.
Remember that they are
"Beta releases" and faulty at times.
But very likely there will be some hot fix available really soon.
Not all bad news.

You know something. all this stuff about JB is doing ma head in, it's available, it's not, it causes bugs, it's beta, I think I will stay safe with the system that came with the phone being Gingerbread, I would hate to see my phone being ruined as what has happened to some people.

Yes it will.. The UK, the rest of Europe and the rest of the world. It just seems to take longer than anyone expected. Weird. But I got used to it with my old Nokia phones. Firmware updates almost never appear on time.

@tonto
Please don't make this outrageous claims without any proof or evidence.
There is no Samsung official announcement of an update to the GT-I8160 model.
The claims released by an employee at Samsung Ukraine were just that... unfounded.

At the official Samsung website the phone is still listed as 2.3 GB and no reference to any possible updates.

No one knows if there will be an update.

We hope so.
But no one knows.

TMN Portugal is the only carrier at the moment selling this particular device running JB 4.1.2 but the firmware is already preinstalled out of the box on the device.
And TMN only started to sell this phone on their shops this month.

So no. no one knows until Samsung announces it...

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is a mid-range handset. It's a decent looking follow-up to the original but it still positions itself in the mid-range market in this day and age. It houses a 3.2 inch TFT display, an 800MHz processor, 768MB of RAM, Blu... Read More
