Thanks a lot! Did everything successfully then I was having 30MB of free internal memory. Then I tried to install G+ and though it was installed on SD, my phone memory reduced to 26 MB. Is their any reason for this? Is it possible to move Maps, Market and G+ to SD? Or is there a way to remove these apps and install from the scratch? Whenever these apps are upgrading themselves they are growing in size successively. Like Maps now in my phone memory is about 11MB of size though the recent Maps app is about only 6MB in the android market. Also I tried to install Market 3.0 and now it's about size of 7 MB in my phone memory. I'm seeing no other apps are upgrading like this, eg FB. I wish if they can be removed and installed from the scratch.
Also it'd be more helpful if someone tells me how to stop the automatic upgrade of Maps. It's totally annoying while I'm in roaming.
I'm having Froyo and unrooted.

Googling before asking would help.
If you have read the entire thread, that would have also helped.
Not trying to be rude here.
To stop automatic updates, go to market and uncheck automatic updates for a particular app. The market app can't be stopped from updating.
I followed the TUT exactly , but i'm getting an error at the second command.
response command "adb devices" the response is "List of devices is attached."
As response on the command "adb shell " it comes back with the error:
Error: adb shell not found

I think USB drivers are not installed. Did you get a prompt?
Is kies installed on your system?

Even a kid will know to turn off the automatic update if that option is available! There is no turn off auto upgrade option available for Maps though the other apps are having. I ended up asking here after a lot of googling and asking in other forums with no good results.
hi
ive downloaded the latest version on the sdk and have extracted and opened the file. when i run the android sdk and avd manager i cannot find the usb file or the revision 5 file. I don't have kies installed on my computer.

Dude, if even a kid will know... how can't you...?
I ahev never allowed maps to update in my phone.
Go to market.
Go to google maps.
There it is first option on the app page itself.. "allow automatic updating"

ok look, go to android market, find google maps, open the page, see under download theres a check box saying "enable auto-update" deselect that and it wont update,
please dont correct praki when he is obviously right and you are obviously wrong,
Thanks a lot for the tutorial!
I´m new to the forum and to android OS and this was extremely helpful since I was starting to run out of internal storage but after this I was able to move a lot of applications to the SD.

dude, custom roms are pre rooted. No need for this method on them.
Initially I had issues with loading Google USB drivers with 'code 10' error . [I had Kies installed on my PC]. Re-installed Samsunfg drivers using 'install driver' option from Kies menu. When reconnected device, PC recognised it and loaded samsung drivers. Rest was simple.
btw, I had to re-update my facebook profile login after this. FB showed me logged in earlier; but went into loop forever. Clearing data and re-login did work fine.
Hey guys! I did everything the post says, I even got all the $ signs when I was supposed to but when I restarted my Ace and tried to see if I could move apps from the phone memory I was not able to. I even deleted one of the apps that was on the phone memory and tried reinstalling and it went to the phone memory again so m guessing it did not work. M kinda lost right now cuz I haven't been able to do it even tho I've tried like 5 times now.... Help :'(
I am prety much a noob... I dont own a android... But am planning to get one in the next few weeks...
With 2.2 isnt there apps2sd option preinstalled??
Unfortunately I can't get this to work for me. I have read and re-read the TUT and I don't think my issue has been brought up yet
After clicking on http://developer.android.com/sdk/. I am offered two Windows packages. But when I try to extract them I am told that i need Java JDK installed.
So I trot along to Oracle and begin a lengthy download only to be told that Windows won't accept the certificate.
So I move along to CNET and download JDK 6 but this doesent have an addition package called xxx.revision 5 at the top of the list.
So back to Kies and update drivers and to your samfirmware link also but all to no avail.
I would dearly like to be able to transfer more apps to my sdcard as my phone memory is filling up dramatically.
So I've been going around 'n around in circles with this and any help or directions you could make to straighten me out would be most welcome.
Hopefully it is something simple and if it is please bear in mind that we all have to start somewhere

You don't have to do anything with command prompt. Another window should also open which contains stuff about packages.

I think that certificate thing might be temporary. Try again to install JDK from oracle and report.
great tutorial, exactly what i needed, but i ran into a problem
i followed the tutorial exactly, i installed all the drivers and all, but when i connected the phone to my laptop, nothing happened, noting popped up, i have samsung keis installed, so i moved to next step, with the command prompt, that too worked fine, i restarted the phone and when i installed some apps in my phone, they all got installed in phone memory and the option "move to sd card" is also disabled, why ? what went wrong ? can anyone please help me
thanks in advance
Hi, great tutorial by the way, i followed it and got the $ signs at the end to confirm.
I do however have a problem in that it doesn't seem to have moved all the apps. I am left with 4 apps (out of 70) that are not movable according to app2sd pro. Any ideas guys??? Do I need some other app mover?
I have tried to uninstall then re install the apps but no joy.

Rgds & thanks
I am also facing this issue. Is it due to Firewall restrictions? Pls help.
PS Kindly note that we are not tech ppl and thus request for a solution in simple language. Sorry for trouble and thanks for help.
I installed app2sd prior to finding this thread and I noticed there were no apps "on phone" and that they were all "phone only" or "on sd", if I do this will I be able to move the "phone only" apps? Will it void my warranty?
Tutorial:
1. Extract the package to the folder of your choice [Let's say- C:/android-sdk-windows/], run SDK Manager.exe
2. Close the command / windows command prompt window that opens.
3. In the new window, click on Available Packages to the left. Untick all options you are prompted to download except the USB driver option. Usb driver option will need and addition package called xxx.revision 5 at the top of the list. So you need to check a total of 2 options.
(Note-If you get an error message at this point, enable “Force https://…” in the Settings. From the list of available packages, select “Usb Driver package”, click on the Install Selected button in the bottom right corner and follow the prompts. )
4. Do not open Samsung Kies. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB-cable. Your OS will prompt you to install new drivers. Choose to install them from the android-sdk-windows/extras/google/usb_driver folder. Do not mount your device; you only need to plug-in the cable.
(If you don't see this prompt like me, well no problem. It might be due to samsung kies already installed.(not sure though)
5. Run command prompt in administrator.
Type in the following after the ">" at each step (without quotations, and including spaces and capital letters)
"cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools"
"adb devices"
"adb shell"
A $ sign should pop up
"pm setInstallLocation 2"
Another $ should pop up
And your done. Close everything, disconnect phone, turn off phone and then turn it back on again
Note:Now the phone will be set to install all apps you install onto the SD card. However, current apps on phone will mostly still be stored on the internal memory. This process doesn't move these apps for you, it adds the ability. So you must now manually move those already installed on the phone. Install some apps like app2sd etc.
From original Blog entry-
Note:I should point out that it’s preferable to install certain apps to the main memory, since it will take a while before the SD card becomes available when you start your phone. Applications installed on the memory card will also be unavailable to the system each time you mount your phone as a disk drive. The internal storage is probably quicker as well, even though Google claims that “there is no effect on the application performance so long as the external storage is mounted on the device.” In general, apps that integrate with the Android OS and that often run in the background is better to install on the internal storage, while games and most other applications will have no problem chilling outside on your SD.
Widgets should essentially be installed on phone memory.
Hope it helps.
Update:
From what I have come to understand (correct me if I am wrong), Each app will store some .odex files on phone memory to speed up the boot process.
So don't complain that phone memory is getting lesser after each install. Though if you could've installed 40 apps before now maybe 150+ and still have 30-40 mb left. (depends on what kind of apps you install).
Darktremor's a2sd scripts deodex the apps and COMPLETELY move the apps and cache to sd card but you will need to root and run the scripts.
Though an easier way will be to install a custom rom.
I have done first two steps of the tutorial. However as tutorial says, a new window should open once you run SDK Manager application.
When i Run it, it opens a new command prompt window but it disappear automatically. And Further new window (for Available Packages option) is not opening ie I am not getting a new window having multiple options (including available packages).
Kindly help. I have downloaded zip file of Android SDK and then extracted it in a folder in C drive.
Tips [TUT] How to force install apps to SD card without ROOT!!!
Its an amazing resolution.... Works perfectly fine.. Now my android installs all applications on SD...
The best part is it never increases RAM... has a steady & stable control over RAM.... Thanks a lot...!
hi..i already follow the step to run the SDK manager but couldnt see the USB driver option in available packages that u mention in the tutorial parts..it only have android repository and third-party add-on.. so what should i do now?thx
I have followed the tutorial exactly as you have said. After restarting i got the access to move my applications to sd card but now i am unable to download applications from the market. The download either does'nt get started or at the end of download it just says 'couldnt install on usb or sd card' please help me out. Thanks in anticipation.
is this safe? I mean I'm afraid to things like this to my phone cause I'm not a very techy guy. I love my phone but due to limited memory, I only have a few apps on it. I'm afraid of rooting my phone then I read this tutorial. is this 100% safe?
